He is not alone, noticed this comment in the anime discussion I found original Like, the title of the episode is “Empty Shell” obvious there is a lot of symbolic meaning that could be applied to NewBaru, but, thinking about it more, could the Empty Shell also apply to Rem? Is there some kind of evil spirit looking for an “Empty Shell” to possess, and Rem is the perfect target for it? But why that run specifically? Does it have something to do with Subaru stepping outside the tower and Shaula changing? Actually…wait… What we saw when Subaru stepped outside the tower, was what almost looked like Shaula slumping over like a ragdoll… Could Shaula’s body ALSO be some kind of empty shell, maybe even one thats keeping in some kind of malicious entity in place, only being non malicious because of the rules set in place, and Subaru breaking the rules unleashed it, and it went to posses Rems empty husk of a body???

One of the abilities of Eclipse, one of the power of the authority of Gluttony is to transform their appearance into one of their victims. Here they transformed into Rem to kill Subaru. When you don’t know that Lye and Roy are involved in this arc (and knows about RBD), it might seem that Rem killed Subaru and maybe the others, after getting crazy, which due to the massive history they share and how people are waiting for her return looks shocking. Still there are clues they are involved because Subaru lost his memories, the way of talking of « Rem » is reminiscing of Lye, and from S3, we know they can change their appearance. But from a narrative POV making them use Eclipse to impersonate Rem here is really clever.

three share memories right? Yes and no. They do share memories but it was Reid that was the trigger. When Roy ate Reid, it was Reid digging through the shared memories that allowed him to learn about RBD and thus triggering Satella. Ley would trigger it as well eventually but it was always Reid. However, since in the last loop of the arc, Reid and Ley are defeated before they dig through the shared memories, they never learn about RBD and don't trigger Satella. Satella does get triggered when Rui gets spat out of the Corridor of Memories because she does know about RBD.

Subaru does actually say that line in the LN. To Subaru, who had spent hours wandering blindly in the dark, that had been the only relief. That had been the only change he’d been able to find underground. It was his only thread in order to escape hell. And as he followed it, he’d encountered yet another gate blocking his passage through the sand. “This is the third one…” On all fours, he looked down at the hand that had touched the cold gate for just a second. What they failed to adapt clearly is the line a few sentences after that: Kneeling in front of a gate, Subaru ran his hands over it. The gate had just let Subaru pass without issue so many times before, but now, after all that, it bared its fangs. He pushed and pulled, but the gate did not budge. It had suddenly decided to block his way. “This isn’t funny!” With that sudden betrayal, Subaru was filled with shock, and even more so, anger. He had passed the fourth gate and was trying to pass the fifth one. He didn’t have any clue what about it was different, but this gate was trying to stop Subaru.

I have pointed out to others that this isn't necessarily a mistake. He mentions opening the third door, but there is then a timeskip to him being stuck at another door. Subaru doesn't say what number door he is at, however, or how many doors he already opened. Everyone is just assuming it was the next i.e. fourth door where he got stuck. When he was in the tunnel previously with Ram and Echidna, they skipped the third door, I believe, but he had a line indicating the number of doors he opened after getting stuck that time. Not sure if anyone could do a comparison to see if the final door depicted in this episode is distinct from the one he got stuck at previously.

Having read Arc 6 in the WN recently, I recall Subaru escaping the underground by getting to a door which ended up having four lights on it that were glowing and then he got teleported back to the tower. Sadly I didn't read the LN but just from the information I had I thought it was fine? Since in the anime, during the first time he was there with Ram and Echidna, three doors opened, then the fourth did nothing, whereas in in the latest episode, the fourth only didn't do anything initially and ended up glowing when he got frustrated, after which he got teleported to the tower. Seems fine by me as it rewards the people that paid attention and see the differences
