Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 4th season

Man, I really love Subaru and Julius's relationship. The two of them are two birds of a feather. At this moment, Julius is exactly like Subaru was at the beginning of the series. He has comrades, but because of Gluttony, he's basically on his own. And so he projects himself even more, just like Subaru did in episode 13 of season 1. And finally, in Julius's biggest moment of failure, the two of them completely understand one another. What a great episode.

All of the named episodes up until now have been fairly positive in tone (aside from Theresia's, which was bittersweet, and Regulus's, which was deservingly brutal because he sucks). Having a named episode be a character's lowest point is genuinely unprecedented for the show thus far. But I suppose it *is* fitting that it was Julius, the one without a Name, who was the first to suffer such a fate. At least he has the formerly Self-Proclaimed Knight Natsuki Subaru to help him get back on his feet.

I really like how far Subaru and Julius' friendship has come, the way they respect each other is really interesting to see. Julius was probably really upset that he couldn't be as strong as Subaru sees him and that is probably why he didn't want Subaru helping him, so I appreciate that Subaru understanding what he's been through still didn't want him struggling alone.  Lol Reid thinking slashing Emilia's chest would get her flustered creating the biggest opening on him was amusing. Subaru will definitely keep that in mind when it's his turn to take the test.

Did anyone else get reminded of Echidna with the spiral staircase’s aesthetic (the one that spawned in the grassy field)? Curious to see if/how the others approach the exam now that Emilia’s cleared it. Also with the return of the opening today, here’s a theory I came up with in light of last episode’s information: are the books scattered on the floor when Subaru’s passed out his own? I count 24 open books (and 23 closed ones), I think he’s died 20 times across the first 3 seasons and 2 times so far, so maybe he’ll end up dying 2 more times before some pivotal point such as him reading his own books. I don’t know why he would do that, how he would explain their existence to anyone else, or how they would even exist if he “hasn’t died”, but Meili’s comment last episode and the opening visuals featuring him watching his past deaths… in a location where you can read books to relive dead people’s lives… feels like it could be foreshadowing?

Beginning with the reanimation of the most infamous scene from Season 1, but from Julius' perspective. It was done so well. Julius has had a major glow-up since Season 1. And looking at all the characters in Season 4 artstyle was a treat too. Every other flashback scene was taken directly from Season 1. That's fine. They didn't need to be reanimated as they were already great and worked well. Reid Astrea is the real aura monster. MF humiliated and dragged Julius like he was some scum. Idk how you can even recover from this level of humiliation. Julius is definitely something. Also loved "Anastasia" defending Julius. Her expression was similar to that of Emilia from near the end of Episode 2 of Season 4. Understandable. Emilia's Unlimited Blade Works- I mean Ice Brand Arts was great too. Reid's Rumic pose was so funny. We got two anime references back to back. Awesome. Julius' rematch with Reid was even more humiliating. He went even harder than before. I love the parallels with Season 1 so much. The best part of course was Subaru and Julius' conversation at the end. From Julius literally beating Subaru to a pulp to them now being shoulder to shoulder. How far they've come. This is probably the best episode of the season so far. And of course it is. It's the first named episode of the season. White Fox always goes the extra mile for them. The direction, animation and music were all on point. I can't wait for the next episode.

When I look back on it. It’s pretty obvious how dumb and stupid what Subaru did back than was. And as Julius said how much of a high he was riding on letting his emotions carry his action making a enemy out of everyone But if you look at in the reverse to have the courage to stand up for someone who being scorn at without a second thought or hesitation Even if it meant challenging the whole world To protect someone even when your scared and afraid Even more so to do that when your afraid Is not something anyone can do! And it can be considered a knightly trait in a way ! To fight for the sake of another especially those who are in a vulnerable position and to uphold your ideals and convictions without for asking them even when the latter would be easier As stupid as it was it also something I think I can admire and respect Julius for also admiring for!

You know the episode will be a banger when the title is just the name of a character. Interesting how Julius mirrored Subaru back when the two of them were fighting, though he's not ***as*** full of himself as Subaru was. Even more interesting how much Echidna tried to help Julius, despite barely knowing him right now. Emilia being clueless really payed off here, though she should've clarified that everyone can pass. Also makes sense that Shaula would be scared of Reid considering that he likes seems to think that sexual assault is justified in a fight. I'm more shocked though that a guy like that even got the title of "Sword **Saint**".

**Sugoooku Watch** The tally so far: Sugoooku counter: 112 Sugoku-likes: 19 Non-canon sugoooku: 25 Non-Emilia sugoooku: 24 I didn't hope for it, but we got one when Emilia remarked how our stick swinger moved more than one step. And another when she noted that he is very strong. And a third when she said she'd be careful. Not only was I wrong in thinking there might be less sugoooku this episode, I also didn't expect the action to be mostly involving Emilia and her cute battle cries. It was a really great fight, and that alone would have made it a great episode. But the whole story about Julius and the callbacks to the royal selection ceremony and the very touching deepening of the bromance between Julius and Subaru elevated the episode even further. Absolutely splendid. I was 100% convinced they were going to somehow return to a dead Ram and Rem, so I'm glad they're alive. I realized that if Shaula does everything Subaru tells her, he should have an easy way to activate Return by Death. As long as he does it away from everyone else, of course. Its really nice getting some more characterization on Julius. I never thought I'd like his character so much after he beat up Subaru in the first season. Its really weird that Anastasia's fox spirit was so desperate to save Julius, considering to her it feels like she just met the guy. Maybe Anastasia remembers him somehow? I assume the plan now is to come up with strategies on how to get Reid to move a step, or go through the library to find his book. There has to be a way to find a specific book easily instead of one by one.

Damn, this 4th season is killing it! Every episode is better than the last. This time, Julius got the same treatment from Reid that he gave Subaru in the first season, their relationship has really developed since then. Emilia managing to beat Reid's test was a pleasant surprise, but well, she had it easier because she could set the conditions for victory. Even Reid couldn't say no to her adorable *Dame?*. Emilia's sounds during the fight with Reid were also so adorable! I love that Emilia is both so sweet and so badass during the fights. Emilia's pout when everyone said it was dangerous to try another test alone was also beautiful. There wasn't much of Shaula in this episode, but her reaction when she remembered who she met before she lost consciousness made me laugh out loud 😆 Anastasia/Echidna's attempt to help/save Julius was quite interesting; I wonder why she was so determined to help him. I'll later update this comment with my screenshot albums from the episode.

I think a big reason I find Re:Zero my favorite of the (modern) isekai is just how well it treats its other male cast members, even from the very beginning of the series with Reinhard being a cool guy. I like they're willing to do stuff like Otto's flashback in S2, Garfiel's solo episode in S3 and something like this week's with Julius. Also I like how Emilia has Gate of Babylon and Unlimited Blade Works. Shirou Emiya would be proud

Julius generally got washed lmao The animation isn't the best we've seen this season but with what they've had, white fox still managed to make the action entertaining, especially with Emilia vs Reid. Even though Emilia won, only she was allowed to advance, the fact this goes for everyone else pretty much fucks over weaker members of the camp like Subaru. This episode only confirms that the stick swinger is Reid himself who Shaula didn't really have nice things to say 2 episodes ago and Reid fondling Emilia's breasts with his chopsticks kinda proves what Shaula said about the guy. Since this episode is Juilus named, his character is on full display and it's done pretty well with the episode, especially his relationship with Subaru. That last scene with them on the stairs is so peak bro, from the conversation itself to the callback to season 1 episode 13 with Julius's monologue re-contextualizing that scene.

A smug asshole who only uses chopsticks to fight really sounds like the perfect kind of character for Sugita to voice. That entire fight scene between him and Julius was insane. I am curious why Eridna started blasting, though. Is this still Eridna, or did Anastasia take over because seeing her protecting Julius felt more personal? Man, Emilia absolutely killed it tho when it was her turn! While her initial barrage was cool, the tactic of placing down weapons in the area and just picking up and using whatever is closest instead of continuously conjuring one was pretty damn awesome. The way she ends up winning is so very Emilia tho. 😆 Who knew Emilia not giving the standard anime reaction to her boobs getting touched would actually give her the opening she needs to bap Reid in the head. I love how Reid even does the Rumiko Takahashi sign with his hands after getting bonked. I love how Reid is even upset at Emilia for not reacting the way he expected 😆 So unfortunately, Emilia's win doesn't count as a team win. Everyone needs to fight Reid 1v1 to get to the next level. I mean, did Reid specifically say they need to beat him in a fight? He did agree to Emilia's condition, so there must be other ways to beat him. That finally explains why Shaula is afraid of Reid. The dude was fondling her boobs back when he was still alive. Also, does Shaula need to beat Reid? I mean, she's the tower's guardian, so I assume she should be exempt from that. I can't even imagine how Shaula would be able to fight Reid in her condition. So now wonder we had a flashback to Subaru's worst moment in the series at the start of the episode. Julius insisting to fight Reid is a parallel to when Subaru fought Julius back then. Not gonna lie, the entire scene where Subaru was supporting Julius down the stairs made me tear up a bit. Their bromance is so goddamn beautiful. T\^T

Julius Juukulius. You know it's going to be peak Re:zero when you got a name drop title for the chapter/episode. Against the wall that is Reid Astrea, Julius, who has only one thing left is his strength, his swordsmanship was completely destroyed. His sword literally as well. At least Emilia passed but they don't want her to go alone so right now it only serves as salt in the wound for Julius that despite how hard he tried, he completely failed while someone else passed. I get how desperate Julius was and why but really do wonder why Eridna was so desperate? Like damn her facial expressions and everything. Despite knowing that it would cut down Ana's life span, she just kept spamming jiwalds until she literally passed out nose bleeding like wtf? Did she get ptsd from Reid like Shaula or something? I doubt she cares about Julius that much when she doesn't even remember him. In the end it didn't even do anything to Reid so just RIP Ana in advance that probably cut her life span by how many years? If Eridna keeps spamming attacks like that, Ana's probably going to drop out just cuz she can't even survive 3 years or the remaining 1 and a half years of the royal selection. Also so according to Reid he's only picked up the sword for 3 months here? I guess that's why he doesn't recognize Shaula. This version is Reid with only memories since he has picked up the sword for 3 months meaning he hasn't known Shaula yet etc. We also see the strongest of each nation besides Reinhard this ep. Each country basically has their own Reinhard, though obviously Reinhard is the strongest. I think this is the first time we ever see the design of the mad prince?

I'm concerned about Scarfdona using so much magic. I'm pretty sure they mentioned earlier that her using magic was only possible via Anastasia's Od, which chips away at her life force. And so much of it too. I think that's a high cost to pay if this ends up being the golden loop. I would think the healing spirit can't heal her Od, so that ought to stick imo. Also, I can't believe that boob touching scene happened. Emilia being too naive to be affected by it was not something I expected. I guess I'm not surprised that Shaula has ptsd from it if Reid just broke out that move like that. Also, holy shit, only 3 months of swordmanship for Reid in this state? What a monster. Oh wow, a named episode for Julius even though he lost. That's a surprise to me.

Oh hey, it's Subaru's self-introduction in the royal capital! One of his most infamous cringe moments! But what was Julius REALLY thinking when he saw that? Julius wants this to be a noble, fair, duel between warriors...but the "Stick Swinger" needs no sword...he can manhandle and outplay Julius with JUST A PAIR OF CHOPSTICKS. It's not even a contest! Those chopsticks can block, attack, or even break a sword and the Stick Swinger is barely treating this as a real fight. This isn't even a light workout for him. Dang, Foxidna REALLY does not take it well when Julius was getting dragged through the ground (literally). She was unleashing so many attack spells she knocked herself out. Why was she so worked up? Was it because of Julius himself or the importance he has to Anastasia? It felt more personal though. Julius is down, Anastsasia is down...really, the only one who can fight him is Emilia, but even she knows she can't sugooku beat him in a fight. The only thing she can do is try to make him move from that spot, even if that means unleashing every ice weapon she can think of, ice tonfas, unlimited iceblade works, to try to get him to move. And still none of it even phases him. And the Stick Swinger, being the objectifying pervert that he is, finds an opportunity to touch her boobs with his chopstick...leaving him open to get bashed upside the head by an ice block. That's how you treat sexist pervs, Emilia! Even if Subaru has to be held back from trying to challenge the Stick Swinger. Good news! Emilia can ascend! The bad news...it can only be her. Anyone who wants to follow her has to legit beat the Stick Swinger, meaning all of them have to figure out how to do it if they want to keep going. But as cute as Emilia is in her pride over her victory...it definitely isn't safe to send her up there alone. I guess it makes sense that the other nations would have Reinhard-level people in them to act as an equalizer. But they're also dealing with a Reinhard level opponent themselves: Reid Astrea, the original Sword Saint! And someone who Shaual fears as much as she loves her own master! Also he probably did feel up her boobs at one point. Julius just couldn't resist challenging Reid again, even if it doesn't go well at all and he gets a beatdown on the level of the one he gave Subaru in season 1...all the while Julius has to face his insecurities, how he couldn't measure up to Reinhard, how he wanted to honor Anastasia for being her knight, all the while running from his failures by way of knighthood. And none of that is going to help him against Reid. But at least he's got Subaru, even if he's too prideful to accept Subaru's help. But Subaru can see Julius is in the same position he was in when they fought and can't leave Julius alone...much like Julius, despite how he acted, found Subaru's "performance" moving because he saw a bit of himself in there too! Julse was moved by Subaru's greatest act of failure wow. Poetic

Absolutely beautiful Julius-centered episode. He is still clnging to his role as knight and binds himself to duty of being strong, to live up to his name and position. Even Reid comments how he won't win agains him if all he'll do is stick to the same rules and expectations. And oh my god, the parallel between Julius and Subaru, where they both just needed to get beaten down, even if they knew well that it will end badly for them. The whole staircase scene was such a 10/10 bonding moment for our two knights. And with Julius accepting Subaru's helping shoulder, he can start rebuilding his name, now not relying only on his ideals, but on the people who care about him as well.

I love how Subaru gets what Julius is going through more than anyone else. Julius feels completely alone in the world right now, is desperately clinging to what little he has left in an attempt to stay afloat, and fighting a battle he can't win because there's no other way to vent the fear and helplessness in his heart... exactly like how Subaru was in the Capital. And like how Subaru had Rem back then, Julius doesn't have to take everything alone. He doesn't have to walk down the stairs alone. Honestly, I thin this is one of the core strengths of Subaru. When Rem was drowning in her own inferiority, Subaru helped her look to the future. When Beatrice had given up, Subaru told her that he needed her. When Emilia felt cornered, Subaru said he would support her no matter how much of a pain in the ass she was. Subaru's just *there* for his loved ones when they need him, and that's something incredibly important to them.

Manga readers really weren't just hyping when they said this would be the best arc jeez what an episode! I'm fully on board the hype train. Episodes 2, 3 and now 6 have been the best Re:Zero's ever been and the most amazing part is that they accomplish that feat each for completely different reasons. How does Tappei keep doing this Now with the things that happened this episode we are once again just given more questions than answers with a dash of world building. The biggest one right now for the longest time is the relationship between Anastasia and Julius. She seems so concerned for Juli considering she doesn't remember her past with him AND the fact that this is actually Eristasia..... They can't just be master and knight right.... I'm excited to finally experience more Re:Zero's lore and world for because so much of the show's run time the focus has just been the main cast and a handful of locations. Getting more info and other key figures in the and seeing Julius was trained by the same man in season one that was insulted that Felt (a "gutter rat") is being nominated for queen really makes the world feel lived in and like it has actual history. Shaula still being hilarious. I know they are drawing a lot of parallels between Julius and Subaru but I really feel for Julius in particular in this moment because you can feel the identity he's built his entire life being crushed to pieces. Thankfully Subaru is there for him. Their relationship is really endearing

If you asked me back in season 1 where I would see Julius and Subaru I wouldnt say here or if you told me this is where they would end up I wouldnt believe you. This bromance and their character dynamics made me tear up it was fantastic the callback to season 1 and seeing Julius in the same situation that Subaru was just hit so much emotionally and for their relationship. Especially the end part of the episode on the stairs was so damn good and that cut to black I had to double check if the episode ended and thankfully it didnt and we got greatness. Also Reid being an asshole but I am curious if he is full on asshole or just a giant facade to hide something because he stuck with the deal he made with Emilia ? Speaking with Emilia she was great this episode it helps to be oblivious and bonked Reid haha. Question is how are they all going to get pass Reid ? I have a video review if anyone is interested. Emilia is surprisingly crafty, the only way to beat someone that strong is locking them in a trap of their own making. I expected he'd give the same treatment to everyone but Julius. Oh man, Julius got the episode 13 treatment against Reid, talk about menace ginger. That's a horrible humiliation, but thankfully it got him and Subaru closer, it's nice to know that even then he was already moved by Subaru's words. Also, why isn't Julius using his spirits? EDIT: Forgot about the Gluttony situation, but couldn't him null the contracts and then make new ones? I know there's sentimental attachment to the specific spirits he currently has, but going to the tower no one ever reached full of unknown danger while underpowered seems like a bad idea. He could even try to form new contracts with them if I understood spirit rules right, at least that's what I got from Emilia and Puck's current situation.

This doesn’t really have anything to do with this episode but I’ve never talked with anyone about this show so I wanna just splurge thoughts that I’ve held for many years. I watched Season 1 back in 2016 after it finished airing - it was the best anime I had ever watched. Subaru’s hopeless, lonely struggle was just so interesting to watch 🤧. That carried into Season 2, which I did watch some of as it aired. But nothing after that. I’ve now spent the last month rewatching the entire series and have finally caught up….. and wow. This show is STILL HITTING 10 YEARS LATER. A bit less of the angle of “Subaru suffering but he can’t tell anybody so he just seems like a maniac because he’s going through these insane events that would mentally destroy anyone, but he’s doing it time and time again”, and instead the show is pouring so much more into character development from Season 3 onwards. Subaru’s return by death doesn’t feel like the “main point” or really even gimmick anymore. It just happens occasionally - because he’s not on his own and has so many allies / friends he can subvert having to die like 7 times just to get to the next checkpoint (thinking of the Witch Cult attacking Roswaal’s mansion, he died so many times). It makes me a bit sad honestly, and I know that sounds a bit morbid, but I really enjoyed watching Subaru struggle time and time again. I’m fascinated with human psychology, and to see him horrified after RBD and borderline mental breakdown is so cathartic to me for some reason, because this normal ass dude just finds a way to break through it either by himself or help from others. I feel the writer did a very good job in making it believable, and that really just pulls out my emotions a ton more. And whenever a show can do that for me, I know it’s good. He’s the true anti OP main character. Uh yeah thanks for reading if you did I look forward to actually adding to episode discussions going forward tyvm

That whole stairway scene might be one of the best bro scenes I've ever seen, both of them being so understanding, Subaru of what Julius is going through, Julius of the fact he's in a similar position to the one Subaru was in back then and both of them being able to empathize with each other and be emotionally mature about the situation even if it's uncomfortable for both of them... brought a tear to my eye, especially when Julius said he moved by Subaru's actions back then, that completely changes that scene for me, instead of trying to put Subaru in his place it comes off more as testing his resolve... they might be a match made in heaven

With the chopsticks and all I’m guessing Reid is from our world ? And if so, seeing as he’s the first Sword Saint, could that be the ability he gained from getting isekai’d here just like Subaru’s RbD. And speaking of things from our world, I think I saw Emilia conjuring up batons during her fight with Reid. Are batons possible for a world in this time period ? And speaking of Emilia, she needs to be protected. No like literally, girl didn’t even know she was getting sekuhara’d lol

I was about to just comment on how funny Reid is but Julius one hit too deep. I know exactly looking upto prodigies and feeling left behind and taking it to your ego that you can catch upto the prodigies and realize you're not gifted. The insecurities that arise when you see your peers getting accoladed and you falling behind even on your own expectations. Then getting your ass handed by reality that you were nowhere near them by someone who is actually talented. I wasn't thinking much about Julius as a character other than he is an ally for Subaru but the way they set up parallel with Subaru facing the same insecurity as Julius and then bonding on it is done really well. Holy. I always liked that character now I respect him more. Such a well written character.

This might be my new favourite episode of this season. We got Emilia being a badass and fighting which is always nice. Her innocence was actually the perfect counter to Reid's misogyny. She showed that Reid can be beaten, but seems that unlike the astronomy exam where everyone collectively passed after Subaru solved it, everyone needs to clear this exam (beat Reid) individually. Subaru blowing up and needing to be held back at Reid touching Emilia's boobs and telling him to not let Emilia outside because of their lack reaction was fun. Always great to see them stand up for each other. Shaula is giving Emilia some real competition this season, but when you see Emilia's determination, how happy she looks when she passed, and her pout after Subaru ~~went boyfriend mode because he didn't want to be separated from his girl~~ told her it's dangerous to go alone, how can you say she's not best girl? Glad we got more Ram screen time this episode as well. It was only a short time and it was spent roasting Subaru, but we take what we can get. Shaula's clinginess would've probably given Emilia another bout of jealous if she wasn't so innocent. I was kind of wondering why this was a Julius named episode at that point because he hadn't really done much up until this point, but when Julius wasn't in the healing forest (for lack of a better term) and he got hard dunked on by Reid, it became clear. Julius is not so different from Subaru. He stubbornly keeps going when he has no chance of winning and he doesn't accept help easily. I'm not sure how much of the others they're going to show taking on Reid's exam, but part of Julius' exam seems to be his learning to accept help and not be so ridged. The enemy doesn't care about your rules or code of honour. They only care about winning. By any means necessary.

subaru hated julius for so long even after they teamed up at the end of season 1, and when julius told him to go away he could have easily just walked away, but for him to stick by his side anyway is yet another great progression of character. i sympathized with subaru more than most in S1E13 (even though emilia was justified in leaving him) so i disliked julius too for a long time but he’s become an excellent character, for a series that relies so much on the development of its main character re:zero’s side cast is very much fleshed out as well

Me coming here without knowledge of where the story is going: If he will admit defeat if you make him move, one of the girls can trick him to walk to her if she offers a hug. He says his chopsticks are for when he needs a snack. Offering food may be another way. If this guy is so terrifyingly strong, then direct confrontation is not the way to win. Just like Emilia won by putting him off guard due to not reacting to his creepy flirting, I feel that victory has to come from outsmarting him. Then again, the trial was not to beat him, but to earn his respect. Beating him is only one way, and he did say multiple times in that last fight that he couldn't respect Julius the way he was.

Yep, Reid Astraea. Not a hard guess. Dude, if Eridna felt the need to step in with magic with such a horrified look on her face, then Reid was about to fucking KILL Julius. With CHOPSTICKS. God, Reid's sexist as hell. So Emilia weaponizes her cuteness in response. "I'll do what I can, the best I can. That's how I learned to do things... from my knight!" Hnnnnngh, these two have become such a great couple since Season 3. SHIT SHE'S PULLING OUT UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS THAT'S CRAZY. And I love Subaru going full angry boyfriend mode after Reid's shitty stunt.
