Best anime episode of the season for me. I love a lot of other shows atm (WHA esp) but this musical performance was beyond my expectations. It made me so happy to see my favorite moment in the manga adapted like this. They had to create the music, the choreography, and almost all the VAs had to sing. And it wasn't a short performance -- it was like 15 focused minutes that didn't cut away to the audience. Incredible.

Unfortunately I'm on my "Animes i must watch before i die" list so rewatching would take a long time I'll probably just watch S1 and S2 recap and start from 3.
残念だけど、今「死ぬまでに見るアニメ」リスト消化中だから見直しはきつい。S1・S2の総集編見て3期から行くと思う。普通くん

I’m hopeful, a couple of good moments coming up this season dont need crazy good animation.  As long as they get a similar level of art quality as last episode it should be great

Presumably they captured motion, applied said motion to 3D models, potitioned things with desired camera angles, then redrew over those frames for a 2D finish? What I would guess without having watched the video. It makes me think of what was done in Bocchi the Rock

Yes, there are a lot of motion capture spaces now, mostly thanks to how much gaming has used them for cutscenes. I think it would be actually more difficult to film this directly for rotoscoping. You would have to get a lot of coverage of different angles, probably setup 3-4 cameras so you get multiple at once, and then shoot the choreo multiple times to get all your expected coverage. Given this is used for reference, it is actually much easier to just motion capture the performance, and then just find all your camera positions in the edit. That can then be handed off to the animators, and if any shot doesn't work you can always go back and refine the angles at any point.

Sort of modern version of what Disney called Disney Rotoscoping where they live action filmed and hand drew from the film. How they did their masterworks. Shooting a live film then animating it. The Motion Capture being used as the reference for modern equivalent of hand drawn.

That seems to be the answer. The dances of Lied and a few other men suggest they stopped at an earlier stage of production for those shots.
