Man, I can't say this enough! I love these side characters! One of the big selling points of Iruma-kun is that so many of the characters are just so lovable, you genuinely could have an episode focusing on a side character without Iruma involved and it would be enthralling. But never without overshadowing the main cast! Iruma still rises above them all to be one of, if not THE best characters in the whole series!

Pretty much can only think of 'Great Teacher Onizuka' off the top of my head, but that series is nowhere near as pure/wholesome about the school culture or teaching as 'Iruma-kun' (ironic since Iruma-kun is literally set in the Demon World). But I do have to give 'GTO' credit that anime made me seriously consider becoming a teacher IRL when I saw it wayyy back in 2000 (the year it aired in Japan), and I can also imagine 'Iruma-kun' doing the same for other kids about to start high school.)

NAFRA MY BELOVED Did any of you pick up that she was a girl? I know y'all thought she was a he last season, but if you paid attention this season you may have noticed that Ronove called her "Natasha" and had no problems touching her despite always fainting when another man touches him. I LOVE THAT LIED CROSSDRESSED AND IMMEDIATELY STARTED BATTING FOR THE TROUBLES GIRLS GO THROUGH TO LOOK FASHIONABLE! And even more I love that Iruma recognises Nafra despite never seeing her without her cloak on! And then there's Clara being embarrassed about her wings! Elizabetta recognised and quickly changed subject for her sake (the ANGEL that she is), but I wonder what's going on there? Man, I didn't even get to talk about the teacher's dorm tour. That had such a good ending it left a big impression on Iruma. Unlike Kalego, I think he has good potential as a teacher!

Biggest twist of the season: Naphula is a girl and looks absolutely adorable. I love how Lead has to pivot to his sister bullying him to hide the amount of crossdressing he has had to do. Not that both aren't also true and teachable moments in their own right. I mean, of COURSE Iruma would notice her even outside her Jawa-form. I'm almost starting to wonder if she's part of the Iruma Harem now too. Have we not seen her wings or her flying before? But maybe she feels self-conscious because they pale in comparison to Ameri's or more "well-proportioned" demon women. He can be a Demon Lord who also pitches in as a teacher occasionally!

I honestly think Nishi is the only shounen mangaka to actually figure out what was wrong with the pacing of shounen in the Big Three era. Every other modern shounen series cuts out fluff like this in favor of accelerating its plot, but still has extremely long arcs that all have the highest possible stakes, which is the worst of both worlds - you lose out on world and character building and it still feels like nothing's happening. Iruma-kun keeps the fluff but cuts down the individual arcs to reasonable lengths.

This is why I liked Katekyo Hitman Reborn, they kept fluff in later arcs, but I heard that the anime added more, and there is some original stuff by the author that doesn't exist in the manga. Dragon Ball also still have some slice of life episodes between later arcs. Because of this, in other shounen the character development is always related to some tragic backstory or dramatic resolution. And it also makes seem that the story is happening non-stop. While today we got some Naphula character growth just from hanging out with the girls.

Most modern shounen series have short to mid length long arcs, with the odd really long arc here and there (usually their final arcs). I'd argue that this is what causes you to lose world and character building, because modern series are all plot plot plot and they go from arc to arc instantly, allowing for no breathing moments in between. If arcs were longer, you'd actually get more time for that before barrelling to the next plot point. Also One Piece still does the fluff stuff. It takes time at the end of arcs or in between arcs to wrap things up properly and give the characters time to party/bond/do other shit. It's one of the main things people love about OP. To the point fans get made when we don't get more of that, despite already spending a big chunk of time on it as is. It's also part of why it's so long, and it's also part of why Iruma is so long as well (it's in the mid 400s right now with no sign of even being close to the end). If Nishi learned from anyone, it was one of the Big Three era authors in Oda. Her arcs overall may not be nearly as long as Oda's but Iruma kun feels very "One Piece" in it's pacing, world building, character moments and dynamics, taking time to address stuff and length.

I was just arguing with someone who said that the issue is that shonen series now immediately jump into their long arcs whereas series like bleach didn’t get to the soul society rescue until ch70. But both Shinobi undercover and nue s exorcist did pretty much the same thing. Their first big arc happened about 50 chapters in and was a rescue. The difference is that their rescue was 20-30 chapters whereas in bleach, it was 85, which of course gave less room for growth and character development

I wonder if queer, goth, kinky, and punk demons parallel shoelace, tattoo, and ring cultures with tail accessories. I think that’d be pretty cool to explore. I want Demon School to have a GFR—giant fucking robot. I don’t even know how that would happen. But why not? Why shouldn’t it have a GFR? I think this is our first proper confirmation that the Naberiuses are a rich, aristocratic family. The teachers are very passionate about their jobs, it's very wholesome. Naphula is terrified of the extroverts. It's time for some worldbuilding! Specifically about demonic fashion, which of course Elizabetta is very passionate about. Horn decorations are a cute idea. "Carvings" sounds a bit brutal until you remember that there are humans who perforate their ears for cosmetic purposes. Clara's not going to catch that tail. I think Dali-sensei might not be entirely honest. Demon of the Week: Orias Orias (also Oriax) is a Great Marquis of Hell, having 30 legions of demons under his command. He knows and teaches the virtues of the stars and the mansions of the planets (the influence of each planet depending on the astrological sign in which it is in a specific moment and the influence of that sign on an individual depending on how the zodiac was configured at the moment of their birth or at the moment of asking a question to the astrologist); he also gives dignities, prelacies, and the favour of friends and foes, and can metamorphose a man into any shape. Orias is depicted as a lion riding upon a strong horse, with a serpent's tail, and carrying two hissing vipers in his right hand. A pretty straightforward connection here, Orias-sensei teaches astrology.
