I think Ameri has always been something above a friend just because of how much he idolizes and respects her, but the hug and subsequent feeling of attraction towards her (along with acknowledging her desire to get closer to him that meant maybe more than he did) is when he has to start really seeing her as a girl.

Ameri is, for better or for worse, not a part of Iruma’s day-to-day life like the Misfits are, so it’s a lot more rare for her to take a major part in an arc. In fact I think we’ve only gotten two with her so far and one of them didn’t have her interact with Iruma much. The upside of this is her and Iruma’s romance doesn’t feel dragged out because they can advance it every time they do get a dedicated episode together. The downside is we don’t get enough of Ameri.
