I guess Akiyama kind of represents an "ideal" in the sense that, cynical as he is, he's still driven by compassion and empathy even as he cons people who actually deserves it.
And it's Nao's unrestrained kindness and belief in people, however naive and foolish, that draws him to her like his good side in turn does for her.

I figured she was going to pay back her portion, I just didn't expect Akiyama to do the same.
I was surprised the game organizers would use people in that way to make the players continue, maybe ignoring the letter was the play if they had to go that far.
It sounds like the game only intends for there to be one winner, so is Akiyama really going to trust Kanzaki with winning since she'll likely pay everyone back?

Probably not the case even if she won. They would have to pay half the total to drop out each; ie, if she continuously returns people's money, they will remain strung along ad infinitum. The game design here is probably zero-sum in the long run.

My prediction regarding Akiyama's gameplan was correct. The only (minor) error was the true deadline. I guessed midnight instead of the actual 6pm. I once considered the possibility of Akiyama tampering with Fujisawa-sensei's clocks but discounted it once I realised he wouldn't have the opportunity to go inside the house.
Nao's definitely too naive and gullible for her own good. Not only did she waste her victory, the decision had come to bite her when it meant she couldn't back out of the second round. Don't think we'll see Fujisawa-sensei any more, but I have my doubts whether he had learnt his lesson, which made Nao's 'sacrifice' in vain.
Hmm, so the second round had a completely different rule from the first. Now it's a battle royale instead of a one-on-one and the contestants were confined to a venue. Nominally, every player is on their own but the organiser didn't say a thing against teaming up – at least until one backstabbed the others in the end. That would sound like the spirit of the game. They all were also winners of the first round, so Akiyama wouldn't be able to manipulate them as easily as he did with Fujisawa-sensei.

Akiyama was right though, she had no obligation to participate on the second round nor to pay in order to drop out. Legally speaking they couldn't do anything, the only issue is if they decided to illegally use force on their own, but so far it doesn't seem that that's the way they operate, which is why they had to resort to tricks and manipulation instead.
This means that ultimately it's not her benevolence that got her intro trouble, but her naivety again.

I assume the liar game is a way of putting many people into debt so they can profit off the interest, but if Nao and Akiyama keep redistributing the winnings, so that it's payed off before any interest accrues, it'd really ruin the scheme. Definitely interested in seeing how it goes.

Liar Game org probably wealthy enough that they don't even need to turn a profit with it tbh
But if you're right and they do (or they just want to for the love of the game), and if they truly chose Nao randomly, it'd be interesting how they react to her unconditional kindness if she starts either fucking with their ability to turn a profit or just because they don't like it, as obvious they couldn't have foreseen such a character else they'd have made a rule to prohibit what she's doing.

>I assume the liar game is a way of putting many people into debt so they can profit off the interest
The way it works so far, assuming that they can get people to pay off their debts, it's a gain for them.
Let's take Nao and Sensei and let's assume Nao kept the money and opted to pay to drop out.
In that case the organizer invested 200 millions upfront, but then they got 100 millions back, plus eventually 100 millions from Sensei after he pays his debt and 50 millions from Nao for dropping. That's a net gain of 50 millions for them.
If Nao decided to continue they would get even, but then the next game is probably going to work under similar conditions if not under even better conditions for them.

It's pretty disappointing to see so many people bashing Nao for giving her former teacher the money to pay off his debt from the game. Her motivation to win the round was never to profit off it. It showed that she would not willingly fuck over someone else's life for money, even if they did not care about her at all. It's a testament to her strength of character instead of a character flaw. The hate she's getting from that decision is really telling about the relevant audience's cynicism and greed.
Her honesty is not a bad thing, but her naïvete is. Hopefully she grows out of the latter through the story, but it'd be much more interesting to see her maintain her honesty in the Liar Game.

Looks like it's game over for Nao and Fujisawa's win! I mean, someone who totally looks like a collector for a suspicious money-lending mind game showed up at Fujisawa's door! He's totally on the up and up! Fujisawa can now revel in his victory while Nao cries in despair.
Also, you'd think Fujisawa might think he could use all that money to get his family back, but...he would just use it to lord over his debtors and get hostess' to dote on him. What a pieces of trash.
Oh, who are these masked gentleman? The REAL Liar Game collectors! Because Fujisawa had actually let in Akiyama in disguise who just hands Nao all of the money Fujisawa had! Because Akiyama had played Fujisawa from day one! Fujisawa was so focused on his safe that he didn't check his mail, meaning Akiyama could find the REAL Liar Game letter, replicate it, and send in a fake so Fujisawa would get the time wrong! Clinching Nao's victory and Fujisawa's defeat! Akiyama really is a genius conman!
"To fool your enemy, you must also fool your ally" - which is basically how Akiyama handled Nao, even if she isn't happy about it. But Nao is too good a person to just leave Fujisawa saddled with that debt...so she gives him all the money she got out of the Liar Game, so he can recognize that there ARE people worth believing in and trusting in this world, like Nao. And even Akiyama gives away his share so Fujisawa can clear up his Liar Game debt, so Nao isn't left the only one without money. No wonder Nao can't help but feel drawn to Akiyama afterwards.
Nao is too good a person for this Liar Game, so of course she gets invited to the 2nd round and realized she gave away her only means of buying her way out of this thing altogether. Can she really just ignore this invitation and keep herself free of the Liar Game?
It was incredibly suspicious that Nao's "lawyer" would, out of the goodness of his heart, go out of his way to visit Nao and advise her after feeling like he didn't really help her. So of course he's shocked she actually hired a conman (even though he suggested it) and his advice...is to straight up just head to the Liar Game venue and tell them off. Yeah, that'll totally work! And Nao doesn't want to drag Akiyama back into her problems and thinks she's got this handled. Oh Nao, you poor naive, cute, idiot.
So, yeah, the lawyer was in on it the whole time and was intentionally trying to push Nao into the trap of Round 2, so she's been tricked yet again. It really hurts your ability to believe in people.
The contestants for Round 2 are a colorful bunch, headlined by the dealer Leronira, and THANK GOODNESS Akiyama ran fast enough to make it in time to help Nao, otherwise she would be screwed. Especially when most of these people in Round 2 probably won all by themselves in Round 1.
There's 2.1 billion yen on the line in this round, with 100 million in debt waiting for anyone who fails, and the name of the game this time is "Minority Rule." To weed out the majority to the victorious minority.

Yes, Liar Game is definitely more of a 'gambling survival genre', similar to Kaiji, Kakegurui, and Tomodachi Game. They will play various games tailor-made for this show, not based on real scams. If you are looking for a series based on real-life scams, then 'Kurosagi (Black Swindler)' is probably a better fit.

OK, wow. Her kindness really shone through. Akiyama has his doubts on the former teacher, so maybe we will see later on how that guy turns out. He still needs to pay off half his debt, so he has no choice but to do things honestly to reach that goal.
And good on Akiyama (as a former con-man) to work an honest laborious job in construction!
Strange that the "lawyer" just showed up at her residence. He must be doubling his employment duties as one of the people persuading players to enter the game.
The mystery for me is how did Akiyama get himself into Round 2 of the game, not having officially played Round 1? The announcer just went with it as if it was normal and the prize pool went up thanks to him being the 22nd player. I hope to see some explanation down the road.
So gems huh? Takes me back to Duelist Kingdom and Star Chips.
Now, my thinking is...since they are the main characters, if they are the last two players in the game, if Akiyama is going to be the "final boss". I hope by then, Nao will have learned enough and toughened up to make moves and outsmart him to win the game, not just for the money, for but the sake of character building in this story.

Yeah, I predict lots of people will drop this show because of the first arc. Though if you love finding loopholes, the rest of the show will certainly be for you. Ironically, out of similar shows I have watched (Kaiji, Tomodachi Game, Alice in Borderland, etc.), Liar Game actually contain some of the best examples for finding loopholes, even though the first arc makes it hard to believe. After all, Liar Game is one of the show that inspired the hit korean reality show, Devil's Plan on Netflix. I suggest to at least watch until this second game before deciding to drop out.

Yes, it has been confirmed Liar Game is 2 cours, 24 episodes. From what people have said, it is not enough to cover the full story.

Haven't been this conflicted about a show in awhile.
On one hand I can see why she couldn't accept the winnings because it meant her prize would be at the expense of someone else's despair and someone who she knew.
I know most people would say fuck him, he tried to fuck me over first. I can totally understand that too, but some people just aren't built like that. If people think their arent real people like the MC out there, well idk what to tell you.
Really morally interesting show. If the games become more complex it will be great.

This has to be one of the most frustrating episodes of anime I've ever watched. Not because I was bored or anything, but because Nao is so inhumanly naive and "good".
Then she can't drop out of the competition BECAUSE SHE GAVE AWAY HER WINNINGS TO HER POS TEACHER. I know that, on a writing level, this was the author's way of ensuring that Nao is forced to continue playing the game. I fully understand and, to some level, agree as the author now has A LOT (like from the bottom of the ocean to the surface a lot) room to drive character growth in Nao as she is forced to play.
But please, for all that is holy, someone tell me she will have character growth and be less inhumanly naive and charitable. I can't watch another game conclude like this lol.

It was annoying to see her hand the money to the scammer at the end even tho her dad is in the hospital. Maybe I’m not mature enough for this anime

That requires someone to suffer her for 12-24 episodes, first, though. There are enough things to watch that I just don't find it worth it.

She was doomed from the start, lol. Figures that her absurd kindness screwed her over immediately when she didn't have the cash to buy her way out of the Liar Game. Nao's lucky as hell for pulling Akiyama. I'm curious about the upcoming games and the other winners.

Might as well wear a cartoonish 'fake nose' set up at this point
Well, I think everyone had already figured out this 'twist', so it didn't really matter that he made it obvious (to the viewers)!
Oh damn, Sensei, these guys are fake! Time to use your knives!
Oof when she looked at him like that, I kinda guessed where this was going...
Yeah, unless she makes an insane comeback, I think she just lost any chance at being my 'best girl of the season' just for that!
If it had just been "a game with a random innocent" I wouldn't mind her doing that, but he's a scumbag who stole her money...
OH COME ON, not you too?
Jeez, I don't know where she could find 50 million yen to drop out of the game!
Ok this twist was a little silly, BUT I'll forgive them, because it explains so many other previous silly scenes hah.
Even in the first episode I thought the lawyer scene was terrible, but now that we know why he was doing that, at least they make sense!
So many of those looked miserable... Kinda strange, isn't it?
I mean they all won 100 million yen, AND you'd think they come here willingly because they're confident in their chance of winning even more (I imagine Nao is the exception)... So why do they look sad? I'd expect them to look thrilled!
Damn, that's harsh!
First round eliminated half the participants, no big deal, but this round eliminates more than 95% of them... How will they still have people to play 3rd, 4th, 5th round at this rate?
Was their original player pool like 10 million people?
I mean even if they had been 1000, after the first round there's 500 left, and after second round (assuming the same odds for everyone) there would only be like 25 people left, enough for just 1 round!
Also, how is Akiyama allowed in? He technically wasn't a participant... Does "getting involved" in the first round means he has his ticket for all future rounds as well?
Looking forward to this, I like this type of games!

That isn't correct. They won between 1 yen and 100 million yen. You don't need to take all of the opponent's money to win.

The rules designate the one having more money as the winner. If the rules do not specify other state than winning or losing, then not winning is equal to losing. All in all, it's not really relevant unless proven otherwise.

I am sorry but the premise is stupid as F
Firstly how does this organization even make money without means to make money as they only ever get what they lent and even that is half gone as the winner keeps one half.
Secondly there is still NO proper explanation for why police or law cannot be involved with this bullshit. You cannot give someone money against their will and tell them they have to keep it safe from thieves because they will ask it back nor you can force them to play this stupid game. The MC is stupid for not immediately leaving and reporting this to the authorities

Why do you assume all the other characters have 100m winnings?
You win the first round as long as you have more money than your opponent. You don't need to steal all the money and there were probably a lot of players, who split it up to prevent everything getting stolen.
So even someone who just stole 1m and defended their 100m would still win the first round and only get to keep 1m.

I think it depends on what aspect you like about these shows. In terms of characters, then Tomodachi Game is probably better and the mc has more 'spice'. However, in terms of games, I actually prefer Liar Game because the game designs are more creative and airtight (from the second games onward; the first game is not representative of the series).
