Man I am so delighted to see Nao's development, she spared Betrayer boy not out of her usual kindness, but also with an actual logic that helps them win the game. I also have no empathy for him, if after the game he gets his shit rocked, like you went through dictatorship school then decided to do it yourself. Bro is just a straight up asshole. Also even though Fukunaga is pretty unlikable as a person, they are a interesting character. Finally, Akiyama breaking down the game is always nice to just sit back and relax instead of trying to figure out GTO.

Unless I misunderstood something, what Akiyama is talking about: Money used to determine the winner: smuggled money + money acquired during inspections Money you earn: smuggled money + money acquired during inspections + money left in the ATM that the other team did not manage to smuggle.

The simplest explanation is that the money the OTHER TEAM fail to get when the game over become your teams' and gets evenly split but that money is NOT counted in deciding the winner. Ergo CORRECTLY DOUBTING an attempt is actually NOT ''making money'' since you technically only stop the LOSS of a money that would have become yours had the other team not attempted to get in the first place. Sure the ''singular'' player technically would make profit from correct doubts as that money now solely belongs to them but team wise the team only managed to NOT LOSE money, they did not actually earn any. Thus the only ACTUAL ways to EARN money in this game as a team is smuggle or getting your opponent incorrectly doubt you as only those instances actually gives your team THE OPPONENT'S MONEY that you could otherwise not be able to get. And stopping the smuggle actually creates an ''illusion'' of winning despite your team not actually earning money from those and even if your team ''wins'' that way you may still end up being in debt

We got a new OP and ED! Fitting, now that the contraband game is heating up and we're learning about how fearsome Yokoya is as an antagonist. Akiyama finally has met his match, and we've never seen him tested by someone of Yokoya's intelligence before. It does beg the question of why Yokoya is even playing the Liar Game if he's already rich and powerful, but I guess he takes pleasure in finding new places to control (with money).

I am SUPER invested in this game of wits between Akiyama and Yokoya. New OP! Featuring intense mind games with Nao, Akiyama, and Yokoya! We've also got Fukunaga in a wig and skirt again with a gun! Nao chasing after Akiyama! And more Liar Game drama. Kikuzawa first met Yokota in his third year of high school. He came off like your typical rich kid, albeit one with a love of mice and how they represent his interest in subservience, who would likely barely last a week in an all-male school filled with delinquents. But Yokoya is smart AND strategic and manages to blackmail/bribe the toughest guys in school into serving him, thus establishing his dominance over the whole school. Imagine being out an entire week because of a Japanese cold only to come back and see a rigid class structure with Yokoya at the top and it being a dog eat dog world of bribes, violence, and selling people out to get even close to special treatment. And once Yokoya left it was pure chaos afterwards. Yokoya instills himself at the top and appeals to people who want power, so no surprise Kikuzawa fell prey to his offer...and turned himself into a tyrant of the Country of Day just like Yokoya must be for the Country of Night. I understand why everybody wants to beat him up...but Nao knows that they can't fall apart as a team now because Yokoya is just THAT dangerous. So if forgiving Kikuzawa means he gives them the money he earned so they can keep some semblance of a team dynamic going, it's probably for the best. Count on Fukunaga to be daring to make money and carry a lead for the Country of Day! It seems like the team is taking the lead and optimism is high! But said optimism might also be deceptive. I really like how Nao always makes sure to seek out Akiyama and try to make him feel included while he's off doing his Akiyama thing. Why am I not surprised that, once they have a lead, the rest of the CoD decide to play it safe? They have the lead, why upset that? And they end the game in the lead, so clearly they're doing something right and don't have to worry about anything! Right? RIGHT!? But Akiyama knows the reality...they've been so focused on taking the lead in the game, not taking into account the money they get leftover from the ATM, that they've failed to realize that if things continue on this path they'll "win" but be stuck in debt enough to be stuck in Liar Game. They should've remembered that they need to "lose" and get out of this without being in debt...so can they find a way to win by losing at this rate? On a brighter note, the ED is pretty cute and fun! You'd almost be forgiven for thinking this is some kind of romcom with Nao and Akiyama! We also get chibi versions of the cast (and Yokoya playing with his team as chess pieces) and Nao always running after Akiyama!
Akiyama vs Yokoyaの頭脳戦ガチで熱い。新OPも濃いし、Yokoyaの支配力怖すぎ。勝っても借金残る罠に気づくAkiyama有能。EDはラブコメ感あって草2ちゃん

So, the first thing WTF was that for once I thought Yokoya was getting beaten up. Is this even real !? Then they show the photographer and holy goddammit it's all his part of the plan. It clearly feels like this game situation right now Country of Day Thinking they would beat yokoyo just by revealing the traitor, but that was part of his plan. Lmao And Bro created a little kingdom of his own inside of school, huh, it seems Bro is inspired by Hitler or some Shi The Dictatorship is crazy, no doubt why Kikuzawa was so scared of him. Well, I guess Nao did the right thing to spare him, though last week I want him to get beaten to the pulp. Also, at the end of the episode, the strategy was crazy to think that the whole traitor thing was just a decoy so that nobody gave attention to this detail is mind-boggling. Well, losing while having money might be the best outcome. You will get money. Also, you don't have to play Liar game and the other team will need to play the next game while having debt. Is this what they call Dictatorship power? Lol Though I would say Akiyama is fucking genius, I can't wait to see more of this Game of wits between Yokoya and Akiyama.

They are in a more desperate situation than the show is telling us. It's not spoiler because it's an obvious conclusion if you just look at the rules and setup of the game, and put the right information next to each other. But I'll put it inside spoiler because it's fun to figure this out yourself. [Just a couple of simple questions.] How much can they smuggle out each turn and what's the total amount of money they need to smuggle out. Now you have the number of turns they need to smuggle all the money. When the number of turns left = the number of turns they need, they are fucked. Even just approaching that, they would be in trouble because they would become predictable. So every time they smuggle nothing, they are setting themselves up for failure.

Can't help but imagine what Yokoya's Plan B would've been if any of the delinquents straight up didn't care about their futures and messed him up anyway. Something that's usually lacking in mind games stories is the human factor. I get it because the draw and appeal is duels of intelligence and strategies and game theory and that stuff requires rules that everyone follows consciously or not. But irl sometimes plans that make all the logical sense just don't work out because humans being humans. Incidentally that's why I like Youjo Senki . It's not a mind game story but it does have a strategic component, though they do factor in human unpredictability. There is a plan and it will work as long as the enemy behaves rationally which they will because we both follow the same principles of warfare and WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE ENEMY ISN'T BEHAVING RATIONALLY!?

One of the major themes of Youjo Senki is the dismissive hubris of alleged rationalism and the humility to get off our white horse myopia and empathize. The carrot and stick is very powerful-and sometimes the other person does not care about any carrots or sticks you can offer or impose, or you may have misread what they even consider a carrot or stick. Reason is not a process by which we arrive at truth, it is a process by which we arrive at what we desire. As Tanya said, they are rational, and thus have completely missed the point.

My main question is what Yokoya was doing to prevent low level students from copying his plan(make photos of Sasaki group beating up people to report it to the police) to destroy the hiearchy, especially since his tyranny relied on Sasaki group threat of violence being used frequently(reporting people is the main way to go up in levels). It mostly relies on if Yokoya kept how he got control secret and kikuzawa discovered it later or if he didn't and that's why kikuzawa knows it, because we have no info that puts one over the other.

I really liked this episode. We get a new OP and ED. OP is ok, but ED is nice and light, catchy and pastel-y, if that's a word. It also helps we get super chibi versions of the characters to augment the light hearted tone of the ED. So Yokoya's backstory comes up and sets up the basis for how he came to be in power. Kikuzawa got off easy as Nao saved his hide from being punched many times. I like that she is the glue to keep the peace, but also to raise legitimate concerns. As I guessed last week, those airport lounges are HUGE! So people can wander off to different sections in between rounds. And we get a visual confirmation of being able to see into the other lounge late in the episode. I too glossed over the rules and only focused on what was being smuggled and inspected. I totally did not pay attention to what was remaining in the ATM would also count. Glad it's only round 16 that Akiyama woke everyone up to the real way to play this game. Btw, I wonder what everyone will have for their meals. Surely it's not going to be prepacked airplane food. Maybe something better like actual airport lounge food? When will the blond gun girl show up? She looks to be a friend, (oh wait, that's Fukunaga right?) while Yokoya facing away from the camera in the OP looks to be a foe (but maybe he will join them in the future?)

Prison arc! I wonder if that's gonna be a game or... Actual prison! Akiyama's probably alright in prison, but Nao, oof... "Guards, Guards, I saw these 2 guys sharing bags of flour, I didn't get mine at dinner!" Waifu with a gun? Be still, my beating heart! Shot through the heart and you're to blame! So we learned a bit more about Yokoya's time with Betrayer-kun... Damn, it was like some anime with power systems (with E rank people being baggage carriers and stuff)! At the moment, but... What if they start losing? Because the random anecdote they told about Yokoya leaving school isn't technically linked to Yokoya's story (he wasn't even there anymore) so... It could be foreshadowing; Yokoya leaving sent the entire school into a power-grabbing chaos, with friends turning against each other and all. The same could happen in this game, if Yokoya can't keep them in line anymore! So the solution is simple: They have to kill Yokoya! But more seriously... If Yokoya's side seems to be losing at any point (The real 'losing'), his control won't be so absolute... But worse than that: Some people will still support him, which means they'll turn against each other; Some will want to stop following his plan because clearly it's not working anymore, some will want him to come up with a new play and say "He carried us this far, let's trust him again", some will say "We won a little at first but then lost it all and more, so his plans don't even work", and the team fighting amongst themselves will lead to disastrous results! PROMISE? Girl, this is the liar game... If there's no contract, what is a promise worth? I guess some may see it as an 'investment' into the next game (if he proves to be disloyal everytime, he's then a pariah) but still! (At least make him PINKY promise!) United as long as they're winning, yeah! Right now, they're following a dictator, because it's beneficial to them... Soon as it stops being beneficial, well people tend not to like being ruled by a dictator! See? They lynched him! So Akiyama had to explain the full game to them... But honestly it's more than that; Even if it wasn't about the money remaining in the account... They don't just want "to win money", they want to win THE MOST; By playing coward, they're ensuring their potential earnings are capped; They won't win a big payday if they don't risk big. But their potential losses are still enormous... Playing risky means they might lose hundreds of millions BUT they can also win hundreds of millions. But playing chicken means they can STILL lose hundred of millions, but now they can only hope to win chump change. It's like playing roulette but if you lose you lose your house, and if you win you get like $1k. They NEED to start carrying more, to increase their potential earnings, otherwise it's a "lose - get nothing" situation. And as Akiyama stated, yeah, to lower the # in the atm.

The new OP's worse, but the new ED's better. Yokoya paying off the whole school is pretty crazy. Kikuzawa coming back after a week to 'Nam is funny but terrifying. Nao was wise correctly clocking that Yokoya had more up his sleeve. I was shaking my head alongside Fukunaga at the cowardice of the jobbers. Akiyama's callout was very necessary. They've got 34 rounds left, so that's 23 rounds of max cash carrying needed at minimum or an average of 67,647,059 a round. Doubt calls are gonna start flying pretty heavily, I figure.

Looking like the typical bully magnet but managed to flip the hierarchy around in only a couple of day’s certainly quite the accomplishment for Yokoya. When Kikuzawa said that everyone couldn’t let go of power once they’ve had a taste of it, the statement applied to him as well. Little wonder he treated most of the Country of Day like a slave last week. What a twist in the game. Turned out losing was winning and vice versa. It’s quite the challenge to empty the bank as much as possible without forfeiting too much of it to the inspectors. It’s certainly the most difficult game so far!

New opening song! According to Akiyama, the total amount of the whole country at the end is calculated as: In half of the turn, the contraband is x(nothing is treated as contraband 0), and inspector doubted y( a pass is seen as doubting 0) The contraband country changes [0, 150m), a success contraband is y/2+x for the whole team The inspection country changes (-150m, 0], a failed contraband doesn't change the country's total amount at the end.
新OP来た!秋山の計算によると、最終的な国全体の総額はこう導ける。半分のターンで密輸品をx(何もしない場合は密輸品0扱い)、検査官が疑った額をy(パスは疑い0扱い)とする。密輸国の変動域は[0, 150m)で、密輸成功時はチーム全体でy/2+x。検査国の変動域は(-150m, 0]で、密輸失敗なら最終総額は変わらない、という考察ができる。考察くん

I think its not entirely the same as Minority Rule by itself (without every participant signing up a contract and Akiyama bailing out the other losers team for a stalemate win) doesn't allow losers to prosper nor Downsizing gets resolved as trivially as Nao did - it's just a preference, essentially. So it makes sense Akiyama worded it that way, but by no means Contraband is a game which you want to be losing unless you have a particular agenda as a player. it's team Vs team so if you just want to lose this game by smuggling 100M every time irrespective of others, you essentially lose this game from a cash perspective, too. So to sum up: while some similarities are definitely there, they ain't essential for any of the games Recall, the tournament design itself doesn't allow winners to walk away without paying 50% rake, so the losers of Contraband might not post profit for themselves, but as a zero-sum they provide the profit to orgs, so it makes sense SOME get to leave with cash profit. But not all of them, because Contraband game is also individual Vs his own team game.
ContrabandはMinority Ruleと同一ではない。Akiyamaの言い方は筋が通るが、負け得なのは特殊目的がある時だけ。50%徴収を踏まえると一部が利益を得る構造も納得。考察くん

The game element remains the best part of the show. What Akiyama said about having the most money still left in their bank didn't occur to me. He said he believed this to be Yokoya's goal, to have money and get out of the game but I disagree with that part. Yokoya seems he would be more about power and winning since he seems to genuinely enjoy playing mind games; he might let his team lose as far as total assets if he can advance and continue to have power. The worst part of the show remains the characters and everything else. I say this nearly every episode but the writer makes the characters really shallow and over the top. Yokoya taking over his school within a few days is probably the stupidest plot point I've seen in this show yet, its completely preposterous. I guess if the author is thinking of these elaborate complicated games and is on a deadline, you just throw whatever in as background.
ゲーム要素は相変わらず一番面白い。Akiyamaの見方は意外だったけど、Yokoyaの目的は金より権力と勝利だと思う。キャラ描写は浅くて、学校支配の過去はさすがに馬鹿げてる。普通くん

It is not supposed to be a 1:1 realistic story (aside in the logic used for the games themselves), these characters are purposely told in cliché ways to portray specific thematics. Point is Yokoya represents something real pushed to the extreme just as Nao and Akiyama do. Whatever is in the middle of these extremes are the everyday humans we meet on a day to day.

Yokoya took it over by blackmailing and bribing the schools top thugs but then openly used the same tactics they did, so isn't that way to stop it to just do the same thing Yokoya did minus the bribe? They even showed him looking around the corner at Yokoya and the thugs beating someone up if he had a camera boom he's now exempt from the system. If it was only a 3-tier system (where it's Yokoya-top thugs-everyone else), then sure it's easier for everyone else to unite and defy them. Except, it's a 5-tier system from A to E, with D and E made up of a lot of punished folks. The meaner ones in baseline C-Rank are tempted with the power to lord over D/E-Ranks however they want, and would relish in such power. If you've seen Kakegurui, you'll have seen this taken to the extreme. In a system like this, trust is easily fragmented, paranoia spreads and it becomes hard to find people to believe in and wouldn't sell you out. Plus if Yokoya had bribed all the teachers, which other adults could or would have been contacted too?

There are still downsides to a 5 tier system over a 3 tier one tought: while it makes it harder for everyone else to unify, it makes the lowest rank have a much bigger reason to destroy the system than if they were the third tier like everyone else(they were being treated like slaves by everyone else is a much stronger reason to rebel than the bullies are more cruel than usual) And a problem with him having bribed adults outside the school is that Yokoya rapidly stops being an extremely smart person with a lot of money to use and he becomes a person with an extreme amount of money and an intelligence smarter than average to use them, wich is a lot less threatening in the liar game.

People kept telling me Game 4 is the turning point for the quality and depth of this show, but so far it's the same pattern all over again. The Rounds problems and solutions feel more like manufactured drama with idiots not even paying attention to the exact rules. Round 2-4 only needed basic mathematics to solve and understand the problem, eg. winning and/or winning money. Team Day is imo unbearable annoying. The mood swings of characters is so trash, boring and hinges on lunacy with how comically evil they suddenly become just to get to easily called out over a boring predictable twist (traitor for the 100th time) while all side characters are not in learning a single thing or changing in a seemingly relevant way. I will keep watching till after this arc, because everyone hyped it up, but the whole show so far felt like a huge waste of time with poorly written characters and boring games, which is a bummer, because for the first time Game 4 actually seemed interesting by premise. Worst offense of this show is characters having been given the correct solution for Liars Game since the very 2nd Round and they literally threw out all knowledge acquired by the next moment. Literally only Akiyama deserves to be in Round 4 and it's crazy how the others believe they have more than three braincells to continue playing this game with even a smidgen of a chance at winning after loosing in R2 and R3 Edit: typo

Hmm, if you don't enjoy Liar Game up to this point, then I would suggest you to just drop it. It is unlikely that this game will change your mind. This genre is not for everyone, and it is ok to not have interest in it. However, I don't necessarily agree with a couple of the points: - You mention Cipher Academy, but they are of different genre. If you suggest Liar Game fans to read Cipher Academy, then they will surely be disappointed since they are very different, despite the battle of wits aspect. Also, relatively speaking from author standpoint, it is easier to create multiple intelligent characters in Cipher Academy than Liar Game, because characters in Cipher Academy only battle using codes. It is much easier for an author to create new codes than to create an entirely new board game with multilayer strategies in Liar Game. There is a reason why the author of Detective Conan recently wrote more code-craking mysteries, because they are easier to create than coming up with new locked-room or poisoning tricks. - A more apt comparison would be series such as Death Note, Kaiji, Tomodachi Game, Alice in Borderland, where the characters play games with a set of rules established in the beginning. You can see that in most cases, there are only a few intelligent characters, usually two. The mc and the villain of the game. So, not much different than Liar Game. Other characters function as pawns for those intelligent characters to strategize with. - Also, the 'stupid' npc actually act as handicap to Akiyama, which actually made it harder for the author. The authors have to come up with strategies despite the huge amount of handicap to the mc. In fact, it is kind of lazier if the author made the npc smart, since there will be less obstacle to Akiyama. In stories like this, I want the author to put as much obstacle to the mc as possible, so the ultimate strategy will be more satisfying. - Ultimately, Liar Game and this gambling genre is made for someone who appreciate details. Sure, you can guess there are traitors, but you should also think about: "how the traitor manage to pass the message to other team?", "how they manage to convince the traitor?", etc. It is like watching magic trick. Sure, if you see a magician fly on stage, you can easily dismiss it by saying ""what is special, they definitely use strings", but that is just level 1 thinking. You would appreciate it more if you also think about: "how they set up the strings?", "how can they pass the rings through the magician?" etc. - "Round 2-4 only needed basic mathematics to solve and understand the problem" -> I don't see anything wrong with this. In fact, that is the strength of Liar Game compared to series such as Cipher Academy. It is perfectly possible for viewers to also solve the game before the mc, and that is testament to the author that he is playing fair. Also, just because they use basic math doesn't mean it is predictable. In fact, lots of viewers still need people to explain the math behind the card tricks that Nao and Fukunaga played during revival round. You can just check the discussion forum of that episode TLDR: I suggest you to just drop it, I don't think this game will change your mind.

Thanks for the comment. Glad to see there's people actually engaging in discussions instead of just straight up insulting me over not liking their anime. I actually didn't mean to recommend Cipher Academy as a direct comparison to Liars Game. Like you said they are completely different genre. But I still believe one could analyze both stories, especially with focus to their characters, on how these battle of wits happen. Cipher Academy has "puzzles" and Liar's Game "games", however both find their solutions heavily in mathematical analysis and psychology. Imo Cipher Academy especially handles their antagonists well in the way they become allies. Going out of Round 3 I seriously believed Team Day had understood Nao's point and they would work together in the next game that heavily focuses on team work. Also, the 'stupid' npc actually act as handicap to Akiyama, which actually made it harder for the author. This is a great and valid point. After thinking about the npcs in this manner I actually feel like they fulfill their part in the story better. When I asked people about where the story goes earlier into the anime episodes I unfortunately got the expectation that we are going to leave these specifically stupid npcs behind. Only winners make it to the next round. Even if they stay in the game they will not repeat past mistakes or work together better. Those kind of expectations did I have. Comparatively I have to admit, Cipher Academys many smart vs many smart approach in the later stories parts felt more engaging than handicapped smart vs smart. Also I enjoy seeing reoccurring characters develop, which just didn't happen here so far? > Ultimately [...] I am actually surprised you're mentioning how detail orientated the show is? Like the anime didn't bother to mention at all how that one guy communicated with the other team in Round 4, just for example. Some other explanations also just fell flat for me, I guess, eg. "he knew Yokoya already". I will stick to the end of this game at the very least. Wonder if there's another twist

*had to redo post because mods lol* The whole premise of Contraband is that you are anchored with lesser capable team mates. If you ever in your life bothered to play in a spectated team game you would know it immediately, the games are DESIGNED that way you don't have all smart asses on one side and all dumb asses on others. As far as you criticism goes, you don't even understand BASICS: its not like NPC guys believe they are very much capable in any of the Liar Game rounds at any point of time but as they are burdened with 100 mil debt ALREADY they have no other choice but to play. As far as traitor predictability goes, face it Don't damn mistake yourself for being smart if you don't understand the shit is going on. It's not about the rules comprehension: I believe you can get which card combination beats which when you hear the poker rules first gets explained, heck maybe you can understand a small thing about stealing blinds, but that's it. It doesn't make you a great player and it doesn't make if predictable for audience as even a basic math is obviously a skill. So in a sense it's not like you are actually looking into the game design to spot a glaring issue, you instead openly ignoring it altogether with main story points because instead of realistic solutions you demand some flabbergasting bullshit What's the point then, let me repeat it. Don't think you are smarter than One Outs creator. Even for those who don't read manga, but saw One Outs they instantly recognize the build up so far, but you don't. Last but not least: you call Yokoya POORLY WRITTEN? Akiyama? Fukunaga? It's more like you are bashing NPC for being less intelligent and detailed than MCs which shows utter lack of common sense on top of inability to process the mind games. I'm not surprised at all you don't like the show as it filters you out and I highly doubt any arc to be the difference if you getting at manga for its realistic portrayal, lol.

mods lol Other comment had more insults than arguments against anything I said, but since you bothered to at least remove those: Lesser capable teammates and complete idiots is quite a difference to me. They know they are lesser, you say? Then what's the point of their comical evil behavior every time they get even the smallest "win"? They don't follow strategy, they don't follow the person that beat and saved their ass through 2 prior games, they don't trust their supposed allies and don't even bother to properly cooperate. Nao clearly proved them how the games can be solved and Akiyama is vastly superior to them in intellect. I don't mind average people participating in the games, but feel these characters are an active sabotage to themselves and others, which is just boring. I never asked to have a dumb and a smart team. No idea where you're taking that from. Side characters needing to keep playing the game and their very self evident ego trips are seriously not a matching argument for whatever else you said either. Tbh your ramblings don't make coherent sense to me anyway. No idea what you are talking about with traitor predictably. I could tell apart any traitor the show gave us so far at the first possible hint, because it was super obvious, however I didn't even argue about traitors being a problem. It's obviously THE Liar Game, but the way this show handled them is like a trash power fantasy. Maybe fun and plain predictable the first time around, but just a waste of time afterwards. I believe the current and prior game math complexity is a fair criticism. Feel free to disagree. For a "puzzle" game show this is just not that hard so far. The simplicity of math problems/solutions shown is self evident up till now. As shown in the recent and past episodes, rule comprehension is in fact an important thing. No idea why you would argue otherwise, especially with an example that's showing a lack of game sense comprehension. Never said I am like super smart or anything btw. You are having some complete fan ego trip. Like I specifically said, Game 4 is as a Game im interesting, but the story doesn't match it for me. It's honestly a self report to me that you think Akiyama and Fukunaga are deep or well written characters. One has close to no personality and was literally exposition dumped into the story while the other is sometimes smart, but falls apart on trivial matters. Not to mention the aggression problems and other issues. No character in the show had any big development so far. Crazy to think otherwise imho. I also never mentioned Yokoya. Perhaps you want to try telling me again about realistic portrayals of anything in this show? We both saw the comical evil meme mugshots LMAO. Or do you now want to talk about Yokoya taking over a school? Lastly let me give a show that I feel is very similar to Liar Game in abstract design, but handles both game complexity, story and characters on a far better level: Cipher Academy.
