LIAR GAME

If it helps, Yokoya's plan this episode comes in two phases, with the 2nd contingent on whether the 1.91 Billion given to the 3 idiots were deposited or hidden. Firstly, no matter which scenario, Yokoya surmises that Akiyama first needs one of the traitors to cart and deposit one half of the contents (ie all money excluding the 1.91 Billion) from the Night ATM to the Day ATM (and thus will be part of Dayside's endgame earnings). In response, Yokoya will get the elected traitor to pretend to deposit, and in truth intercept and hide them on their side instead. That way, because the deposit is never completed and the contents are still considered part of the Night ATM, they shall remain part of Nightside's endgame earnings and Dayside is doomed. Next step is decided by whether the 1.91 Billion were deposited or hidden: If deposited, Akiyama is bound to tell the traitor after (1) is completed; if that's the case, Akiyama will again withdraw the 1.91 Billion, and Nightside will just repeat (1) with this batch. And with both contents hidden on their side, Nightside can settle for this victory condition: "lower 3rd Country balance, lose and drop out of Liar Game, keep much total earnings" If hidden (ascertained by Akiyama not telling the traitor anything after (1) is completed), that means both countries are in fact still about equal in 3rd Country + ATM totals; if that's the case, Nightside will adjust and aim for a higher 3rd Country balance instead, so that they can still win by having more money. They'll settle for this victory condition: "higher 3rd Country balance, win and remain in the Liar Game, keep plenty of total earnings" Does this make it clearer?

How the tables have turned. At the start of the game, Akiyama admitted that he’s terrified of Yokoya and now it’s the other way around. Granted, it’s only Leronira’s observation instead of Yokoya’s admission himself. Akiyama hardly had any screentime with most of the episode in the Night country’s perspective but he had definitely cooked a counterattack. Not sure how it’s related but Nao playing inspector and smuggler in the entirety of the final day must’ve been part of the plan. The rounds might be over but we’ll have to wait until next week for the results and the revelation of Akiyama’s plans. This show might be called Liar Game but it’s more like Edging Game for us the audience with this kind of cliffhanger.

I'll add that while the two have only met face-to-face during that one Inspection while Yokoya was playing clairvoyant, everything else the two know about each other comes from intel and claims gleaned from other players (eg. Kikuzawa (both ways), Nao, Mr Beard) that is supplemented by the exhibited gameplay. That is, the two barely met directly but are so cautious they're paying attention to every clue they can get in order to read the other player. The high tension chess game feel is just so exquisite, so convincing.

I love the scene of Yokoya breaking down his and Akiyama's plans. Given the information he has, everything makes perfect sense, and follows logically without any huge leaps or assumptions. With any ordinary group of players, this game would continue to be a mostly luck/bluffing based game about trying to read your opponents, but Akiyama and Yokoya take things to a whole other level. There's a reason they spend a whole episode just explaining the rules, every little quirk in the ruleset becomes important later on.

He must have high confidence in his 'control', to send him again (and on such an important mission)! That, or he's also planning something in case he betrays them again! Or hell, he could even EXPECT him to betray them, and that's part of the plan! It's a game with so many variables/moving pieces (and 'unknowns'), lots of things can happen! F to the idiots! (Also, not too long ago, Nao probably would've been among those 3! Our girl's getting places!) I wonder how I'd do in Yokoya's place, because everytime during his speech/explanation, I was thinking ahead about the very next line he was saying hah. They need a plan that accounts for the caught betrayal (bluff), one for the double betrayal, and who knows what else! At first it was the Country of Day 'stealing their strategy' (unknowingly), now it's the opposite! I wonder if that would make some of his group doubt him; Like "Ok so the strategy is just to do what Akiyama has been doing many rounds ago? That's all you can come up with?" And that aside, they may fear that "If Akiyama came up with it, surely he's expecting us to think about it as well, and are prepared for it"! Unless Yokoya is playing 40D chess here, this may have given it away... Sending the "risky player" right away, like they're trying to help Akiyama's plan... Of course, if Akiyama suspects nothing about them figuring out their plan, then he would think "Wow, the stars align for us!" but... Of course Akiyama would not just think "Everything's coming up Milhouse!" and assume everything goes perfectly by pure chance. Even if he did not suspect something BEFORE, he probably does now... Things are going a little too well. So unless that WAS Yokoya's plan (to make him realize, to act against his NEW plan), that may have been a mistake! Finally someone says it hah. It may be too little too late though; Not only he looked at him, but Yokoya was ANGRY that he looked at him... Giving it away! That's huh... Surely not a coincidence? Is this Akiyama's doing? Or are the organizers "in" somehow? I don't know if they can be bribed hah. If it IS Akiyama's doing... I can't think of anything he would win by disabling a speaker, so I'm thinking perhaps it's not about the speaker at all; Perhaps he needed parts from the speaker to build something else; Either a communication device (from country to country?), or a recording device, something like that! They think there's no way to betray Yokoya due to the control he holds over them... That's true if we're talking about individual players yes. But if we're talking about the group as a whole... Yokoya's power currently comes from him holding money (and debt) over their head. If that power disappears (say, if they believe the game is lost and they're all in massive debts) then he has nothing on them... And unlike "The other side", he doesn't have their love either (quite the opposite)! At the moment, he has "the muscle" on his side... But if he can't secure them a victory/lots of money anymore, that muscle might be the very first person to turn his cloak! Surely that has to be a plan too, because obviously they would know Yokoya's onto that! I think this may be a hint... Sending the good, honest one (and not the mastermind schemer); Do they have a message to spread, that they need to know the other country will take for the truth? Yeah... Nah; They did not send Nao just to "not say anything relevant"! Akiyama could've done that (plus he could think on the spot in case something comes up). So if they sent Nao, it WAS to say something specific, and given Baldy said that's not the case... I think it's safe that Baldy's lying, and is still with them! (Maybe he INTENDED to stay with the Country of Night, but Nao changed his mind) He thinks they're going to try & recruit someone, so he's gonna do everything from this point on... I kinda had a thought about how they could be recruiting HIM, to be honest; After all, he doesn't give a fuck about his group, he only cares about his personal benefit, right? So if they could make him an offer that would enrich him (at the expense of the others), AND given it would come from Nao he would know it's legit, he might just go for it... And hell, I thought maybe he even PLANNED for this, knowing that if he went everytime from this point on, they would have no other choice, it's either him, or give up... So he went to force them to offer him a sweet deal. This would all make sense, but... There's just one problem with this strategy: Nao would not stand for it. They already know Yokoya's a piece of shit, so no way Nao would go for a plan about enriching him while punishing all the other players (his 'victims'). So unless they found a way to make enough money so they can pay them all off AND have Yokoya on board, I just don't see it! Interesting! I thought the last round would be Akiyama vs Yokoya! I thought the score would be so close that it would be about the correct/incorrect guess of the final case (doubting or passing), one final battle of wits between Akiyama and Yokoka, a more personal one this time! But - unless there's a flashback in the next episode - that doesn't seem to be the case! It's well in theme that it ended with Nao vs Yokoya; It shows that Akiyama has people he can trust (at least one) to be part of his plan, while Yokoya's on his own, he has no friends/allies, only subjects(slaves), and of course, slaves can rebel at any opportunity. Which they should do, if he doesn't win the game for them! They have every reason to be mad at him. Can't wait to see how it goes!

this arc is actually so gas this might be my favourite episode yet being entirely from yokoya's team's perspective, you can see just what a mastermind yokoya is. he could basically guess and counteract most of akiyama's plans, he's really no joke. It's not like Akiyama would just go down without a fight though Yokoya slowly fearing Akiyama and his unpredictability hits even harder because WE don't even know what Akiyama is up to. Why did he do this? Why didn't he do that? Its so thrilling. Plus the final day being purely Nao vs Yokoya was perfect, since the 'bond' for each team is based on those two's ideals about the game. The question is, whos ideals prove to be stronger? The nerve thay had to end the episode before we get an answer. . .

The way the game determines who the winner of the game is, which ever side has a larger 3rd country total balance, split into each of the player's personal accounts. This balance is increased/decreased through the inspections. Successfully smuggling money increases it Incorrectly calling doubt decreases it At the end of the 50 rounds the players on the winning team will get what is in their personal 3rd country account, after paying back the 400 million yen loan to the LGT organization. Any money that is left in the ATMs is divided among the members of the country that ATM is on as a bonus. Note: This money is not counted towards who wins but is given to the players as a bonus. The original strategy was to keep the 3rd country's balance below the opposing teams balance so that they'd "lose" the game, while getting the ATM's balance as high as possible so that they can get the biggest bonus prize amount. Akiyama's bluff about them not depositing the money into the ATM follows the logic that since the Night players withdrew the money, in the eyes of the LGT, they are responsible for returning the 400 million (for each player) at the end of the game, even though they physically don't have the money. Yokoya senses something is up and got Baldy (Hasegawa) to follow Akiyama's orders but physically bring the money into the country of Night, then took over inspecting and smuggling for the remaining rounds so no one can be influenced. ETA: Right now in terms of money, the Night Country is very much winning as they have the physical money as well as the larger 3rd country account. ETA 2: I also just want to add, that if you win, you must go to the next stage. If you want to drop out, you have to pay the drop out fee, which is half of what you win after returning the loan. Essentially: [(3rd country amount won - 400 million yen) ÷ 2] + what you owe from previous rounds = drop out fee. If you lose, you don't have to pay that drop out fee because you're out of the game. I might've missed something so someone please let me know.

That's the thing, both sides don't have certain knowledge on who's currently leaving with more money. That stuff will be unveiled in the next episode. But in essence, there are only 2 ways to make money in this game: smuggling to the outside account (the official win condition), and the ATM payout at the end, which is the bigger way to profit. Yokoya's team is winning in the outside account balances (at the end of day 2), but which team will profit more depends on where ATM money is. We see a lot of the ATM money (around half) on Yokoya's side this episode, so it looks like he's winning, but we don't know where exactly the other money is at. Yokoya believes it belongs to Akiyama's team (they just hid it), so that would mean the money score would be tied, so to increase the profit they are focusing on making money by increasing the outside account balance. This game can be confusing and has a lot of details (people would go through it a second time to appreciate it more fully). If anyone has any questions I can try to explain.

I'm surprised they just quickly went thru the last of the games so quickly and we didn't get to see the interaction between Yokoya and Nao and I have no idea if the manga was the same or they just glossed over it to fit the episodes. Also the whole episode was Yokoya based and we barely saw Akiyama and Nao and what they were thinking. I wonder if this will be the last game of the season since they by far spent the most time with this one but 19-20 episodes seems to be a odd number to end a show on. That'd be interesting if Yokoya himself betrayed the team of Night. I wouldn't put it past him at all because he's so devious AND controls every card. He could really clean up for himself if he just made a deal of sorts with Nao since before they were only winning by a slim margin. Also no one from his team is questioning him, they're just sending him in assuming he's acting in their interest. The one thing standing in the way of that is his ego, like that would be admitting Akiyama was better than him and even a lot of money might not make him do that.

Yokoya's seemingly seen through every move Akiyama could possibly make, whether they actually kept the 1.79 million in reserve or not, it all comes down to a counter-plan that makes the Country of Day think the plan is going smoothly and faking giving money to THEM. First sign that something is off is that Akiyama doesn't give Akagi the signal like they planned...and he seems to use his turn inspecting Akagi to feel out Yokoya and how he operates. Although honestly I still feel bad for Akagi that he was trying his best but has to get punched and treated like a traitor with no promise of salvation from either side. Did Akiyama really fall for Hasegawa? Is everything really going exactly as Yokoya planned? Although at least they think the 1.79 million still being in play is real, when it isn't, but will that make much of a difference when they're neck-and-neck? Yet the plan seems to be going TOO well and the Country of Day don't look worried in the slightest. Yokoya can't beat this feeling that Akiyama has another plan or SOMETHING is off...so the last rounds of the game become him taking over everything and pitting him against Nao, even if it's just more of the same. The final rounds of the Contraband Game end in a montage. Of COURSE they leave off on a cliffhanger for the final tally...though I think that's more for the shock of the Country of Night to come next episode.

If he withdrew the cash from the ATM, he could have known that the ATM of night side still had more money left in it (I don't remember if they can check that but he could verify it by withdrawing more money). He didn't give yokoya any valuable information as well. It might even be possible that the beard guy confessing was also a plan of Akiyama to make Yokoya trust Hasegawa.

Nonono the plan is to have the traitors from night side to get amount A (total in night atm - the amount that akiyama is pretending to hide). Then later on akiyama will reveal that the amount he was pretending to hide wasn't actually hidden and the traitors will be forced to move the remaining money from night ATM. You can only check the amount in the account of the card which you're holding. The day team will only give the card which is holding amount A.

I liked this episode and also disliked it. First, I appreciate having almost the full episode dedicated to the Country of Night team. I wish we had at least 1 or 2 episodes showing more of their inner workings and dialogue during the earlier rounds of this game. I liked all the possibilities Yokoya was considering, and the counter measures he installed to try to mitigate what Akiyama was doing. But...once the explanation was done, the episode fast forwarded the game like there's no tomorrow. Yeah, we got to see this game over several episodes already, but as I mentioned earlier, if we got to see more of the Country of Night earlier, we'd see a lot of POV from both Day and Night teams trying to one up each other. Seems like Yokoya wants full control over the remaining rounds, and the Day team selected Nao for similar reasons. Now...I want to ask, was there any possible relevance to the broken speaker? There has to be right? No way they'd have one of the masked organizers leave and come back just to show us their conversation of "while you were away, this is the new development in the game". Of course no manga readers should answer this for me. But I think there's got to be some relevance for this scene in this episode. To end on a cliffhanger. Ugh. I don't need to see a plane fly off...

With shows like this, the focus is usually on howdunnit rather than whodunnit. The focus is usually on the process (tactics). And even then, Liar Game actually did something unique where sometimes 'losing' means 'winning'. If you want to watch Liar Game but with unpredictable results, then I suggest watching reality competition shows inspired from Liar Game, namely 'The Genius', 'Devil's Plan', 'Bloody Game', or 'Four Wish'.

The cart always existed, just not shown on camera. We don't know how many carts there are though or where they got the carts from but this episode showed multiple cart uses from different people. The initial use of the cart was Kitamura (Day's glasses guy) who moved the 1.01 billion into his account, shown by this episode. From Yokoya's explanation, withdrawing alone from an ATM doesn't change the balance so until the money is deposited, the Night Bank ATM (in Day Country) is still at 1.91 billion. The Day Card is necessary so that the Night smuggler (traitor) can deposit the money into the Day Bank ATM because a Night card cannot make deposits at a Day ATM.

The cart always being there suggests that it's okay to move more money than 100 mil. That's interesting. If it wasn't something the players should do, the easiest way to prevent it would've been for the game organisers to not provide any means for moving large sums of money. Day card cannot be used at the Day ATM is what I thought. Day folks can use their card to withdraw/deposit money at the Night ATM, and vice versa. Earlier, Yokoya had withdrawn money from Night team's accounts in Day Country and cooerced those 3 idiots to deposit them into their account in Night Country. This money if not moved out (to the third country) will eventually be split evenly among Night team members. Akiyama could've done exactly the same. What confuses me is why he needs to give their card to one of the traitors to do the withdrawal themselves.

The moving of money could be done with the suitcase instead, it's just less efficient. So the cart itself really doesn't offer much other than efficiency. At the end of it, whether intentional or not, it's within the boundaries of the game to move money without passing inspection (after all, this is what "contraband" is). Unlike Yokoya's plan with the 3 idiots, Akiyama is stuck in a scenario where he needs to bluff about hiding the money and also need to transport the money. He can't set the physical cash out because he doesn't know who would appear as smuggler in a round (which if the wrong person shows up, signals that there is a traitor) and there are very little places where the cart can be hidden. So until the traitor comes along as the smuggler, he has to keep it hidden. The card offers both an easy way to hide the money and use the card to deposit the money.

Since the other team is familiar with the plan (even if they don't suspect Day Country, they know it's a possibility) it's risky to leave money out when a non friendly might find it.
