LIAR GAME

Here's the play-by-play of Akiyama's true plan, for many who'll undoubtedly be confused. Hope this helps: 1. Round 23 (Ep 16): Akiyama/Akagi (Bandana) inspection. After getting convinced to defect, Akagi hands Akiyama his recorder 2. After returning to Dayside, Akiyama then spends some off time recording his message. It presumably includes Akiyama's bluff and convincing to the eventual Traitor #3, along with his instructions for smuggling from Night to Day ATM 3. Round 26 (Ep 16): Akiyama/Shibayama (Longbeard) inspection. After getting convinced to defect, Akiyama passes Akagi's recorder to Shibayama, who then passes it to Hasegawa (Baldy) and then winds up back to Akagi. After listening, all 3 are now convinced and prepared to do the smuggling when one of them gets to be smuggler 4. Middle of Ep 17: Yokoya got suspicious and holds the Confession Game between Akagi and Shibayama. On a spur, Shibayama decides to "confess" Akiyama's bluff to Yokoya (but not that they're ready to smuggle) and Akagi thought he betrayed him for real. 5a . Round 27 (Ep 17): when it's Night's turn to smuggle, Yokoya sends Hasegawa to verify if Akiyama will tell him the same thing as Shibayama's confession. However, Hasegawa intends to follow Akiyama's plan. Akiyama has broken speaker's magnet ready. (Current actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.80B / 0B, Night ~1.62B / ~3.78B Balances per Akiyama's bluff: Day ~1.80B / 1.91B (hidden), Night ~1.62B / ~1.87B) 5b . Seeing Hasegawa going to smuggle, Akiyama proceeds to use all 9 Dayside cards to withdraw ~1.87B from the Night ATM (ie all contents except for the 1.91B in the 3 idiots' accounts). Hasegawa, still believing Akiyama's bluff that this was all that's left in the Night ATM, smuggles them into his account in the Day ATM. (Current actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.80B / ~1.87B, Night ~1.62B / 1.91B) 5c . Upon confirmation, Akiyama confesses to Hasegawa that the 1.91B wasn't hidden, and seeks his help with smuggling that amount from Night to Day ATM. After using the magnet to damage Hasegawa Tajima's card (by rubbing it multiple times and mess up its internals), the game staff provides Hasegawa with a replacement card. (Nearco didn't realise this happened since he was called out of room about the broken speaker, as he attested next episode) EDIT: thanks to a reminder below, Yokoya always gives his underlings another player's card. Watching the Ep 19 again, the one Hasegawa got belongs to "Tajima Kakeru" (Eyebrows) 5d . Hasegawa keeps the old broken card, hands it back into Yokoya's keeping and answers that Shibayama's "confession" was true. Meanwhile, Akiyama uses the 3 idiots' cards to withdraw the 1.91B from the Night ATM and the new replacement card to deposit them into Hasegawa's Tajima's account in the Day ATM (Current actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.80B / ~3.78B, Night ~1.62B / 0B Yokoya however still believes balances are at Akiyama's bluff per 5a) 6 . Round 28 (Ep 18): thinking Akiyama's plan hadn't been enacted yet, Yokoya proposes they pretend to accept Akiyama's plan, so they can intercept and hide the ~1.87B from the Night ATM. When he sends Akagi, Akagi holds the card he got over the window and pretends it's not working, and upon speaking with Akiyama, Akiyama prepares a new plan on Akagi's recorder. His recorder is then passed to Shibayama and Hasegawa, and Akagi lies to Yokoya about his conversation. 7 . Round 29 (Ep 18): Yokoya sends Hasegawa to hide the ~1.87B, Hasegawa holds the (damaged) card over the window and Akiyama plays along. Akiyama hands the replacement card back to him, then Hasegawa withdraws ~1.87B from Tajima's account in the Day ATM. Hasegawa pretends Yokoya's plan succeeded and brings the ~1.87B back with him to Nightside. But because this was not deposited again, it is still considered part of Day ATM contents. (Current actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.75B / ~3.78B (with ~1.87B taken out), Night ~1.67B / 0B Balances per Akiyama's bluff: Day ~1.75B / 1.91B (hidden), Night ~1.67B / ~1.87B (hidden) ) EDIT: amended the Outside balances here, to account for Inspection Room shenanigans in-between 8 . Afterwards, when neither Akiyama nor Nao brought up the 1.91B, Yokoya is convinced of Akiyama's bluff that both ATM's are now physically empty, so focuses instead on earning more money via higher Outside balance. They would have to win and keep playing the Liar Game, but still. -- EDIT: additional plays below. By the way, forgive me if some of the decimal figures are wrong or rounded incorrectly, there's just too much micro-math 9 . After Round 34, Day 2 ended with the following amounts: * Actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.65B / ~3.78B (with ~1.87B taken out), Night ~1.77B / 0B * Balances per Akiyama's bluff: Day ~1.65B / 1.91B (hidden), Night ~1.77B / ~1.87B (hidden) The next morning (Ep 19), Eyebrows panicked to Yokoya that if both sides kept calling Pass, the earnings they get (ie per Akiyama's bluff) won't be as profitable as Yokoya suggested. Right as Yokoya is about to start confusing Dayside 10 . Based on the numbers (Ep 19), Yokoya increased Nightside's Outside balance by ~600M / ~0.6B ~400M / ~0.4B came from taking some from their hidden pile, deposit them into Yokoya's account in the Day ATM, then smuggle them via the Inspection Room ~200M / ~0.2B came from the Inspector's (Nao's) confusion, either by Doubting on empty cases or Doubting a lower amount than its contents. (Though Dayside wants their Outside balance to remain lower than Nightside, they don't want the difference to be too wide, so they want to Doubt) Thus Day 3's final results ended with the following: * Actual Outside/ATM balances: Day ~1.48B / ~3.35B (with ~1.44B taken out), Night ~2.37B / 0B * Balances per Akiyama's bluff: Day ~1.48B / 1.91B (hidden), Night ~2.37B / ~1.44B (hidden)

I think I remember someone saying that Yokoya never gave someone his own card but somebody else's instead Ah right, yes good point! In fact watching the episode again, the card that Hasegawa was using says "Tajima Kakeru" (AKA Eyebrows) and not "Hasegawa Hiroshi"! So Akiyama and Hasegawa were using Tajima's account to deposit all ~3.78 Billion, not Hasegawa's. if so, how did Hasegawa replace his card and got a new one using the speaker? u/crunchsmash below has the right answer

Here I thought Akiyama had somehow devised a counter-plan to those three being a double agent. Turned out they had never turned from the Night country. A master stroke to use Yokoya's surveillance device against him. I never expected it to be an integral part of his plan. Quite heartwarming to see what had swayed them away from Yokoya's dictatorship. They truly had a massive heart to willingly dive into debt to save others. Akiyama might seem cynical at first glance, but deep down he's much like Nao. The reason he went to prison in the first place was for scamming an unscrupulous corpo.

I would also add that with Yokoya's Confession Game throwing a spanner in the works, it really counted on Shibayama confessing just enough to assuage Yokoya's suspicions, and for Hasegawa to believe him that they can still proceed. And for Shibayama in turn to believe that Hasegawa will pull through. And for all three to believe that Dayside will fulfill the bargain. Really, trust is its own commodity in the Liar Game.

Also props to Nao for managing to act super shocked even though she must have known they'd won by that point yet she still had to play it like she was determined not to fail as an inspector. Yokoya can't admit his worldview was wrong or that it lost him this battle, especially to people who would sacrifice themselves for others. Who would act in a way that didn't benefit them? But that'll probably keep until they go up against each other again in the next game.

The reveals! I love how everything was unveiled, with the country of Night members saying "What?? That doesn't make sense." followed by Akiyama or the turncoats saying "But it does. Here's what happened" and showing something brilliant. Who would've imagined that Hasegawa was on Akiyama's side before they even met, and that he smuggled the money on the turn Yokoya was using him to confirm Shibayama's confession? Even though Yokoya lost the contest with Akiyama, we still got a good showing from him this episode, with him dominating the entire 3rd day and massively extending the Country of Night's lead in official score. Akiyama and Nao could only beat him with a tremendous sacrifice to themselves. He'll be a scary opponent if they ever meet up in the Liar Game again.

Ah ....from last week I knew there had to be some relevance to the broken speaker. Turns out it was indeed Akiyama tampering with the cards so a new one could be issued. But I just think...from Hasegawa's reaction when he stood up in the inspection room with Akiyama, was Yokoya NOT watching the inspection room? Seems like an obvious plot hole if that was the case, because that could have tipped him off, even with all the voice recorder devices being passed around. And I suppose now its Akiyama's and Nao's mission to save all the players, one by one, including Yokoya, going into the next loser's round. (No wonder Yokoya is feature in the OP standing next to them and Fukyuama). Btw, as "evil" as Yokoya seems, no one can ever match Seto Kaiba's maniacal laughs!

When Akiyama was experimenting, he broke Nao's card, and got a replacement from one of the masked men. He found out that to get a replacement, you must present the damaged card (losing it doesn't count), and you get to keep both copies of the card. Normally this doesn't matter (since one card is ripped in half), but you can effectively duplicate a card if you damage it in a way that doesn't destroy it (like by using the speaker to demagnetize it). Yokoya was also aware of card replacement rules. At the start of the game, he gathered all the cards on his team, and lent out someone else's card whenever someone went to smuggle. That player must return the card back to him, otherwise their own card is burned (which means they can't collect any money at the end of the game). Since burned cards are completely destroyed, there's no way to get a copy from the masked men. Akiyama needed one card from each team for his plan to work (so he can transfer all of Day's money into a Night country account). Hasegawa can't just give his own card away, since he'd have nothing to give back to Yokoya, and Yokoya would burn the card with his name on it. Akiyama used the speaker to render the card useless, while still making it look like a valid card. That way, when Hasegawa requests a new card, he can give the real one to Akiyama, and the fake one back to Yokoya. After that, the trio would just need to keep the lie up until the end so Yokoya can give everyone their cards back, and they can claim their prize money.

Wasn't Hasegawa's surprised face would be seen by both teams' base? Wouldn't it make Yokoya suspicious? Leaving aside the anime-original TV screens, Hasegawa showing surprise in itself wouldn't tip off Yokoya, since to him it could just be part of the act. Yokoya at this point believes that Akiyama would tell Hasegawa, for the first time, about Hasegawa's failure and how Dayside went and hid the 1.91B. So Hasegawa showing surprise can still be passed across as him acting as though he's hearing this for the first time, just like Akagi's first response. Alas, Yokoya was mistaken and Hasegawa was genuinely surprised for another reason. Also don't the players get any change of cloth over 3 days? They don't, and the LGT probably didn't want to give away the nature of Round 3 by asking them to pack for a 2-night stay. Accommodation includes pajamas and drycleaning, maybe.
