Holy fucking peak. Didn't think it could get better but MAN it just keeps going up. Perhaps I was wrong about the Taira brat. He might not be as bad as I thought after all... Maybe he'll be the insider they need to take down the Tairas. This show might actually just be about old men aurafarming disguised as a military drama. Sato last episode. Sugoh and Nagamine this time around. And of course Ryumon, even with his very brief appearance. Might be our man Aoteru's turn next episode though. Fuck man I need the next episode already.

Yeah this episode showed the youth that his dad seems willing to throw him away, or at least he should start realizing that. I had been wondering up until now which way the kid would go. He seemed to have many of the negative traits of his father but didn’t seem entirely irredeemable. He’s not stupid, Just being young and spoiled. This crisis might be a wake up call. Even if he isn’t fully redeemed he may find a way to choose his own path and defy his father.

I thought hanfu-man from the OP was going to be some literal reincarnation/flashback of Zhuge Liang, or Kaku cosplaying as some Three Kingdoms strategist, but it turns out it's a very literal dude. Shoutout for Takeuchi Shunsuke for voicing him, he gives the character a good amount of grounded gravitas and hard-boiled coolness, very much with what Yamadera Koichi does with Spike Spiegel amongst other characters.

I was most looking forward to this episode in terms of seeing everyone's reactions. I think the Tonotsugu scene is a good reminder that even the most antagonistic characters aren't always as they seem in this story. And although the official twitter account will likely be sharing more information about his place in Yamato society, we know from Tamaki's own words that he suffered greatly from racial discrimination, but from the way he spoke to and of him, we can tell that Tonotsugu considered him a trusted friend. I do have some criticism about the choices Studio Kafka made about those two that I have to put in the source corner. I forgot to point out the portrait of Tsune-chan's mom last episode and also missed that there was lipstick on the teacup on his table when Aoteru barged in while he was buttoning his shirt and had disheveled hair. Then there was the pair of folding screens with the cranes during the banquet at Kanazawa castle, which I think has an artistic connection to the OP that I need to check again. We saw a flock of birds leaving Kanazawa this episode as well. The Higashiyama Chayagai or Higashi Chaya where Tonotsugu's group stays, is Japan's most famous geisha district after Kyoto's Gion and probably Kanazawa's second most popular tourist destination today. This time, the Yamato people shouted "Ijin jōi (夷人攘夷)" which Amazon has translated as "Exterminate the Barbarians," but in Nippon Sangoku, "夷" and "夷人" refers to both to the Seii people and barbarians. I know some people are feeling down about the lack of attention on reddit and poor overseas rankings, but the OP has reached 2.8 million views, the anime goods are consistently selling out, the series has been in the weekly top 10 best-selling rankings since the show has aired and volume sales have surpassed 2 million, so I think it's fair to say that the anime has been a success.

Some new info from the anime's twitter account which adds some context to the actions of the Yamato characters from the previous episode: Satō was a clerk in Fukui until he was fired from his position and received over 50 lashes of the cane after defending a subordinate who was falsely accused of injuring a Taira official. When he was 30, Satō passed the Tōryūmon and entered government service. He governed Kuzuryū wisely and was very popular among the people. After her father died in the war against Buō when she was little, Hina Hiraizumi and her family moved to Fukui where her mother was from. While on her deathbed, Hiraizumi's mother told her daughter of her father's accomplishments and Hiraizumi became so moved that she decided to challenge the Tōryūmon. After she became a government official and stablemaster of Kuzuryū castle, she was promoted to assistant commander. When he was 17, Aterui gathered other delinquent youths from all over the region and established the "Kura Bōsōzoku gang," which wreaked havoc wherever they went. When he was 27, Aterui was forced to surrender to the Ginzan Security Troop led by Ouga. He then joined the security force himself. Honestly before this episode I wasn't sure if I gave him that much credit, but after today I've changed my mind. Kid isn't the smartest but he's smarter than I thought. There is a world where Daddy Taira regrets pissing off his kid, but we'll see if it comes to pass. Frankly I find Daddy to be a boring character who gets by on having massive political influence more than wits, at least relative to the actual military men.

yeah even last episode people were speculating about this already. seems to be hinted even more with the kid taira having some doubts about his father. basically the fat taira is a really cunning guy, he probably knows ryumon was right about not attacking seii, the only reason he still went on and forced the invasion is if he probably has some plans for it. last episode, the castellan said they should not ask for reinforcements and just wait for ryumon because if they did, it would be taira who comes in to save them and gain more power.

What's with this series making me attached to characters then killing them off. I know I should have expected better but still😭. RIP Sato, Hiraizumi and Tamaki🕊 Sugoh claiming he isn't a superhuman is a big fat lie with the way he slaughtered the soldiers after him🧍‍♀️. I do feel sorry for Tonotsugu. At the end of the day, he's still a kid and unlike his father, he seems to care for his men. It must be really painful to learn that his father did not tell him the full danger he's walking into. Sugoh carrying him made him look so much his age and I teared up a bit with that shot🥹. I knew that suspicious "thief" Nagao's men ended up dismissing is important and I'm glad my hunch was right. It was just so suspicious that there's a lone person there out of all days. I do wonder what Aoteru realized. Is there someone else besides Taira that could mobilize forces? I am leaning more towards an Imperial Edict but it's going to take a lot of convincing on the Emperor for that to happen. Yet at the same time, if this is what exactly happens, the mobilisation would happen under his name and not Taira's. Which for the first time, would mark him gaining a bit of independence from him. Supporting this, Kaku did say previously that Aoteru should "Lie in firewood and persuade the heavens." I remember that Ancient Chinese Emperors were referred to as "Sons of Heavens" for they rule under the Divine Mandate. I'm not sure about "Lie on firewood" but I remember it referring to enduring hardship and humiliation for a greater goal. And with Aoteru saying that he doesn't mind sucking up to people to achieve his goal, I think this is what's going to happen the next we see him. That he's going to beg the Emperor to rally soldiers to support Ryumon.

In fact, it was Tonotsugu who gunned down all those Seii assassins Sugoh merely incapacitated. RIP random black attendant with a family. The Tairas definitely values their underlings who follow their orders without question. You don't have to like them, but gotta respect that. I knew that suspicious "thief" Nagao's men ended up dismissing is important and I'm glad my hunch was right. It was just so suspicious that there's a lone person there out of all days. Chekhov's thief (with the gun) stole the life of the guy who brushed him off lmao Nagao ended up being what he pegged Tonotsugu as initially--naive and arrogant--ironically was his downfall, while the latter showed maturity beyond his age.

Misumi looked at the frog and I decided to google "Frog Military Stragegy" and there exists something like that irl LOL. Tonotsugu at least has a chance to become the leader his corrupt father won't be, and can even become a support character for Misumi in the long term. He's at least someone that can be in an interesting position, similar as some of what we've seen in animes like Kingdom. Also, as for the quote I feel the idea is to accept and ask for Taira's help in the short run in order to make the things bigger, but let's see because that conversation can be really interesting.

Ok nice development for the brat. He's still a brat but at least he's learned some manners. Just took the lives of those he actually cared about like Tama. RIP. Seems he was just set up by his shitty father after all. Can we please just kill that fatso Tiara already. Anyways for Ryuumon we can't let him die anyways. Also killed one of the Wajima simps. Dude's not really a big blow though like honestly. All dude has done was get whipped and party lol. Still wasn't expecting Nagao to die so easily and quickly, although he was obviously making a mistake. This show really has no problem killing some named characters. Like I expected Tama to maybe survive but nah. Also starting to see the facial hair for Kaku now. I wonder why before we didn't see anything. At the end it seems Aoteru figured something out? What's the plan now? Also so is the protests for war etc Tiara's doing or actually part of the plan? Well probably just accounted for not started by Kaku etc. Also RIP Castellan Sato and his soldiers. I knew they had no chance of survival, but they did good against overwhelming forces.

They didn’t bring enough men to take down Sugoh. Bro was tied up and absolutely stomped those 4 dudes. Absolute monster. Y’know, I hate that little snot nosed brat but I gotta hand it to him for not just shitting his pants and doing fuck all when they got attack and also realizing this was HIS fuck up. This might be a real changing point for the little shit. For his part, Muuton tipped his hand too early. Dude should never have deviated from the plan. Now the city’s fallen and Wajima is the one in trouble. I’m curious what Misumi just realized about the situation. Taira’s puppet mastering shit right? But what else?

What a surprising turn of events, Tonotsugu actually got humbled and apologized to Sugoh out of his own volition. I'm glad he was able to realize he was wrong and knew to go to him when this all happened, it's fortunate that Nagamine had already made preparations and was able to save them.  It's sad about Tamaki, it did seem like flags were being raised, but I was hoping Sugoh would have said something sooner. It was interesting to learn he was playing a character, I thought we were going to see more about his character in this story being the only part-black character.  Nagao messed up though, I wonder how Wajima is going to react to this or did she plan for something like this with that handwritten letter. She's a lot more cunning than she appears, so I wouldn't be surprised she used Nagao's feelings.

Good luck with that… So that’s how Ohga sees Ryumon’s move, huh? Hooboy… Ah lovely, racism still exists. I assume that person wasn’t actually a thief? Yeah… no… RIP. Dang, Sugoh’s got some moves . Oh… wow, Tonotsugu was behind the gunfire. Holy shit… Ah fuck– Shimmering sky though. Aha, there’s the so-called thief. And he killed Nagao… Nice. Ugh, of course… I wonder what Aoteru suddenly thought of.

I knew it's coming but I felt bad for Hiraizumi and Sato. For all their chivalrous act only to be wiped out instantly. Granted, it's not like they stood any chance and at the very least they died with pride and dignity. Sugoh claimed to not be superhuman but it's still an impressive feat to beat a couple of men of his own while being completely tied. That was a badass move to strike one of the men in a vital spot and giving the rest an opportunity to seek medical help. As badass as Sugoh might be, he's only human and had his limits. I didn't expect Tonotsugu to eventually come to the rescue. Or that he'd eventually see the errors of his way and profusely apologise to Sugoh while bowing. He's been raised in a shitty environment, and this looked to be the chance for him to step outside of it and grow on his own. His confrontation with Denki's sure to be great once he returned home. My wife's slap hurt more Lmao, what a way to taunt the Seii soldiers. Sugoh's definitely among my favourite of the Yamato people outside of Ryuumon and his subordinates. There's no way that long-haired man wouldn't be relevant and turned out he's there to rescue Tonotsugu and Sugoh under Kaku's order. Yeah, Kaku's a master at 4D chess with his rescue plan. Clever to have Nagamine disguise himself as a common thief and thus be overlooked by Seii's scouts.

Great to finally see this moment of Taira Tonotsugu from the OP happen in the actual show and understand the full context. Those snapshots in the OP all seem to depict the characters with their true personalities but Tonotsugu's always stood out to me. It didn't match his entitled brat personality that had been previously shown to us and I thought that perhaps his scowl was directed at Sugoh in some pivotal moment of betrayal of the Borderlands Army. Now I know that his face is dirty and bruised from narrowly escaping death and he's actually riding on the shoulders of Sugoh shortly after taking the lives of many Seii soldiers, saving Sugoh's life.

You know things are getting serious when Seii's foot soldiers are taking off their hoods Sugoh is hard boiled. It's so tough to root against Yamato when they've got a plethora of high-charater, charismatic individuals practically leading the charge. I knew not to underestimate Tonotsugu from the start. Sure he's bratty, but kids that age are impressionable and considering who his father is, it's really unfair to judge the kid for being haughty and being a general pain in the ass. Everyone has merit--even one as sensitive as Taira Denki himself. Tonotsugu bowing his head in apology and shame to Sugoh got me so pumped up at the potential equal partnership based on respect they could build and develop moving forward (as mentor and mentee of sort) after going through such an ordeal. Nagao reeked of death flags and while I was still on the edge of my seat the entire time, I wasn't surprised with the conclusion of the night raid. You hate to see someone get too big headed with their success that they start to believe they're actually the main character of the story lol

Huh. A dispatch from the CiC? So, that's the situation. They're consolidating their position? I mean they're not exactly there to hold territory... They're meant to be tripwire forces. Congratulations, the tripwire forces have done their job and been tripped. Now you know they're coming, from which direction, and in what strength. Yep. Well, can't have them all but they can spring the trap on whoever's here. And yep they got the dispatch runner before he could deliver the dispatch. So, orders from up top. Huh. Someone spotted them? And so time to carry out the operation. So, the kid saved him. Right. Time to resolve this mess. Yep. They managed to save the army. Time to counter-counterattack. And it seems the public is in a furor. Huh. So, more politicking? Where's he going?

I must be the only one who's not moved by the kid's 'turnaround'. of COURSE you would ask for help seeing all that just happened. Let's see what happens when he gets back to yamato (if he does). Or am I just heartless? The plot twist to the plot twist was good. Didn't feel cheap, although it was predictable - good storytelling/direction. Also, that letter might have messed the whole thing up for Seii. Classic case of throwing brains away when dealing with pretty women . . .

This show is sooo peak! They managed to more or less redeem the little Taira in one episode. I hated him before this. The conversation between him and Sugoh, and the moment when Sugoh put him on his back, was so cool and endearing! Also, RIP bozo Nagao. I hope Ouga despises him and his memory, because her recognition was all he ever really wanted. His nighttime raid really rubbed me the wrong way. Sure, it’s a strategically sound choice if you’re winning the war. But if you kill 30,000 soldiers in their sleep and still lose, best believe the enemy’s retribution is going to be even more brutal. Besides, it’s the soldiers on the side I’m rooting for that he was trying to slaughter. When he was shot, right after asking Sugoh if the gunshot wound he had just given him hurt more than his wife’s slaps, which was infuriatingly smug, I was celebrating and throwing middle fingers at my screen. On the other hand, it might be best if Ouga did reciprocate his feelings, and he was left to do irrelevant tasks because she didn’t want him to get hurt. After seeing her army hang defeated enemies from trees, I wouldn’t mind seeing her in absolute despair. I get it, war is brutal, but if they commit unnecessary savagery, I won’t feel bad when they face the repercussions.
