As expected, episode 13 adapted chapters 22 and 23, bringing us to the end of volume 4. No noticeable changes outside of some additional embellishment of certain scenes, although I was gripping the edge of my seat so tightly I may have missed something—and with today's finale, we're at the end of Witch Hat Monday too 😢. Kudos to Bug Films—these two chapters are when you realize why this series is a seinen, and they were handled incredibly well given how dark the subject matter becomes and the care required to adapt it with grace. Especially appreciated how Euini's transformation was handled, the additional moments there served to emphasize his plight and just how horrific forbidden magic is. The stylization on Qifrey's stance at the end was also excellent and gave the season a nice moment to end on—it was funny though to see Bug Films flex their animation skills one more time lol. [Ch. 24+] I do personally wish that they pushed through to the end of ch. 24 as the ending here felt quite abrupt and that always felt like a more natural stopping point to me, but I think it'll feel less harsh with time, especially with the impending second season announcement that I'd expect will be coming soon. it's been so incredible to watch along with all of you week-after-week and fingers crossed we'll be seeing more Witch Hat Atelier content soon!

Never seen the manga, totally discovered when the first episode of the anime came out. First reaction to the ending "oh son of a bitch" ... because of that insane cliffhanger. And if i've understand well, it's the end of season 1, so a long time before the follow. About brimmed caps and forbidden magic itself ... wow. When i've seen "cloack guy" (he has a name i guess?) first time, was like "okay, the guy is invisible, meh" ... but how he move and from what he tell ... he became the cloack + hat itself? cool concept About what they did to Euini ... wow too, we knew you could do something on you by drawing on you, but in fact you can do big transformation (like cloack guy). But in a way, I understand brimmed hat point of view, you can do soooo much thing, why limit yourself. Just not big fan of using none-consent experiment target, but after all it's their ennemies ... humanity have made thing worse than that ... a lot of times. Edit : Gonna buy the manga, can't continue without knowing what follow. That felling happened to me only 1 other time, with AoT 😊

The stone impact was shocking because there hadn't been anything that violent so far. The brimcap was actually menacing and you bought the peril. Ending the season here feels like so much Hype and then you got to wait. The season close isn't satisfying. It's like watching an exciting movie and then you have buffering at the Climax and you can't resume watching until months and months pass. Really excellent. Just the cut point feels weird. Maybe this is why certain shows have their season finales be basically processing the season climax and setting up the next season arc.

I've definitely thought the Brimmed Caps are sort of anti-villains but that's definitely out of the window now. Initially I thought Qifrey was looking for them to team up/convince them to use different methods. I still think there's something off with Qifrey. Either he used to be a brimmed cap or uses some forbidden magic to fight them on equal footing. There's something going on with his eye, maybe a seal tattoo?

This episode starts off so cute. frolicking in the sun, Coco blushing like mad because Agott liked her magic (Coco's very own magic!)... almost made me forget how last episode ended. Speaking of, Alaira's fate will remain unknown until we get a season 2 announcement... considering what the brimhat did to Euini I would be so worried if I didn't know she's gonna be fine . Richeh stole the show, but it kind of hurt watching her go from defiance (pausing to do the whole =P face thing!) to running up against her own limitations in the end. Agott remains painfully blunt, but Richeh needed to hear it. Speaking of Agott, she had a lot of time to shine. She analyzes the scene from multiple angles and takes action decisively. Her moment when she decides to stand up and try to lie about Coco being gone was especially so great. She really sold it with everything she had. Too bad the brimhat was right outside with Coco and co. last episode... except then he drops the lines about Agott wanting to grow up and Richeh wanting to stay a child, which implies they have been watching much more closely than that! I really do love the way the anime staff keeps using inky black-and-white style shifts for the brimhats and their forbidden magic. Even though the idea that "magic is the miracle(/lie) that colors the world" came from the brimhats, they're not putting anything good into the world with it, and the lack of color in their scenes is such a good visual indicator that their actions don't match their words. Meanwhile scenes like Coco's memory of the guiding stones are just saturated with color in contrast. It's just... such a nice addition that really utilizes the medium.

This episode reminded me once again how well the girls from Qifrey's Atelier work so well together, they have great synergy, quick thinking and deductions skill in getting out of tough situations. It’s like they understand their own limitations know exactly what to do combat that. I also liked how Agott took charge, realizing it was best for her to stay behind and for Richeh to go, even if it meant she wouldn’t be able to finish the test. That’s huge character development for her, especially stopping to lie for Coco’s sake after she realized they were after her. I’m really going to miss this show so much, season 2 can’t come fast enough.

Yeah, the weird sudden omission of the storybook framing after only 2 episodes felt extremely jarring and made it stand out more - for the negative lack of it - then for the beautiful visuals it granted. I haven't watched Ep13 yet, but I was wondering for 11-12 episodes now where it went and why go away at all? Surely it's not too difficult to animate, or else why bother setting it up as part of the visual presentation. The problem if made is inconsistency. It feels like something that should happen at least 1-3 times at start, mid or end of each episode.

WHAT 👏 A 👏 SHOW👏. We knew the cliffhanger was coming but the look on my anime only pals was priceless, they’re going to read it from cover to cover now! I loved Euini’s transformation scene, the horrific fluidity of his body changing and then stylisation of the white scratchy lines, then the kind of FMA face reveal..it was heartbreaking in the manga but even more horrible to see here (though my friends take “oh he’s a cool wolf now, he’s very marketable, he’ll sell a lot of figures!” ha). I really enjoyed the dissonant sound design of the strings when Sasaran shows up, really creepy. I can’t wait to get the OST. Like the last episode they really cave the cavern a lot of space to sound expansive, like when Agott and Richeh were debating who is saving Euini, Kitamura really knocked it out of the park for this show. Brushbuddy getting out of the hole?! I bet the animators fought each other to animate that, they gave them such form and volume I love our little noodle. Our poor lad Qifrey being absolutely battered. I really enjoyed the close up intimate shots of Coco’s eyes and Qifrey’s here, as she begins to unknowingly cross his boundary. I wonder if getting badly hurt makes the risk of the silverwood trying to replace the affected area more obvious? We didn’t see that in the manga so much though, I mean Sinocia would have mentioned to Olly if his man had a sapling sprouting from his shoulder. We did see it when he was bathing though. I love seeing unmasked Qifrey though, full tree anxious man then code switching to sensei. The blurred Romonon’s were so CREEPY. I loved how much weight they had too in the sfx, really cool. And I also loved the shots of Coco and Qifrey’s hands, I think hands have been a great focal point that Bug Films have tried to show off, especially when it comes to drawing and the nuanced communication here. He will protect her, and as we know he will keep his promise. The final shot of him going full Shirahama style was a beautiful homage to her hard work over these 10 years. What an honour to pour so much love and care into this masterpiece and see them brought to life so beautifully. If you’ve been on her twitter and seen her watch alongs you can tell she’s WHA’s biggest fan, she gets so excited about it that sometimes I think she just wants to spoil her own manga just because she loves it so much! What an absolute joy, I felt so inspired and so happy as a manga reader that we got such a beautiful adaption. See you next season!
