I was about to criticize the story’s writing if it really let things go that easy for Sitara after she dropped way too many bombshells at Boraqchin at once and laid the praises on thick. She critiqued the power imbalance between the brothers, then said Sorgaghtani is conspiring to make Tolui great khan, said she knows this because she used to work for Sorghagtani until recently, and her justification for why she came to serve Toregene is because Ogedei and Boraqchin are just so wise and amazing and totally deserve to rule the world. Like Sitara, you mentioned being too hast at the beginning of the episode and then pulled that?!

Have to say, while the story is obviously fictional, I like that you can still learn a lot of things from anime like this. For example, I would have never guessed that an important wife of the mongols was Christian, so when they showed a cross, I had to check and it is true that Sorghaghtani was actually Christian. That was obviously Sitara's episode to shine but I want to see what Töregene will do next week. I actually found her to be a bit too laid back, leaving everything to Sitara, only using her influence to get books. But I thought that her whole idea would be that she wanted to influence her own life herself and not let someone else do it once more. So I hope, we can see the "politician" Töregene next week as that would be the aspect that Sitara may have issues with.

For example, I would have never guessed that an important wife of the mongols was Christian, so when they showed a cross, I had to check and it is true that Sorghaghtani was actually Christian. The Nestorian Church had a massive influence in the Far East. It never went to the point to become the mainstream religion of any great empire, but it was basically everywhere east of Mesopotamia (Iraq)

That's interesting. I still find it kind of fascinating that the mongols (who seemingly have their own rituals as shown) would allow their leader's wifes to practice their own religion. One would think this could collapse their unity but it it seemed to have worked well. Though tbf, no one seemed to mind Sitara praying either so I guess this could have been the hint for that already.

The Mongols were extremely open and accepting of all religions, they believe in the Tengeri themselves, but they don't force it on others. So it's not uncommon that a family can consist of people practicing different religions~

Yeah, and they slaughtered all the christians in other cities and spared plenty of Muslim cities. The Mongols didn't slaughter the people of Baghdad because they were Muslim, they slaughtered them because Baghdad didn't surrender. That's how the Mongols operated. Again, they banned certain practices, but Muslims were otherwise still allowed to be Muslim. Framing as though the Mongols despised and only targeted Muslims is disingenuous to history.

OP correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the "when they conquered Baghdad they killed everyone except the Christians" is based on the episode of Baghdad's Christians being spared from the sack due to Hulegu's wife, herself a Christian (like father, like son), interceding for them. This makes the observation somewhat correct, though also an oversimplification: sayyids, scholars and merchants who traded with the Mongols were also spared, and Baghdad was left in charge of the caliph's own vizier. Muslim scholars like Ata-Malik Juvayni (who gave us a biography of Genghis Khan) and [Spoiler due to the new rule for Jaadugar] Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, aka Muhammad, the boy for the early episodes of the series were at the service of the very conqueror of Baghdad, so it wans't as if he had a hate-boner against Muslims. It's just, as you say, that Mongols were ruthless in extreme against those who resisted them and didn't care about the religious traditions or relevance of the victims they crushed underfoot.

I feel the slaughtering aspect had less to do with them forbidding the religion, but just that the meat Sitara was preparing was for the great gathering where most of the people were mongols. I can't say how much meat Muslims got to eat in the first place, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lamb dedicated to only Muslims, they would be allowed to slaughter it however they liked. Of course, one could say that forcing someone to slaughter an animal in a different way is suppressing the religion, so it might depend on the personal interpretation.

For those wondering about this, Genghis Khan did indeed ban the slaughter of animals in a halal way. Or more accurately: he banned the slaughter of animals that would spill blood on the ground, as well as other practices that were religious taboos for the Mongols. As Jack Weatherford, author of Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World explained in a Reddit AMA at r/AskHistorians in regards to another peculiar ban (washing clothes in the river): Genghis Khan specifically granted religious freedom. It was his first law proclaimed outside of Mongolia (i.e, the first of his international laws, or the Ih Yasa). Every individual had the right to chose any religion (or none), and every religious institution was granted freedom from taxation. But that did not mean that they had a license to do whatever they wanted. They had to obey the law. Your example is correct he disapproved of washing anything (including the human body) by putting into living water such as a river or lake. The water had to be first removed and then used to wash the object or person. This was to prevent pollution, obviously. A lot of this was common sense, and it was the law. But I have seen no case of anyone being punished for violating such a law. In addition to disapproving of the pollution of water, he strongly objected to the slaughter of animals by bleeding them to death, to circumcision, veiling, foot binding, or striking an animal on the side or head. Yet, again, I know of no prosecution of such acts. This, of course, included halal slaughter, but not just it. While known for their religious tolerance for the time period , the Mongols still had their own religious practices and laws that had to be followed by all citizens regardless of their personal religion. The Mongols had Muslim advisers, scholars and soldiers at their service, founded temples, and granted freedom of religion and tax exemptions for Muslims too, so it's not as if Islam was persecuted.

I must admit that Orb left me disappointed from a historical point of view, because its basic premise was faulty: it conflates the later persecution against Heliocentrism with the Medieval period, perpetuating the myth of an ignorant and superstitious Dark Age when compared to the Modern Era's scientific progress. The historical truth, however, is that the Church didn't care at the time. Copernicus himself worked for the church, published his heliocentric theory in the open, and even presented it to the Pope. He faced no persecution in life. It was later, with the Reformation heightening religious tensions, that the churches (not just Catholic, but also Protestant ones) made astronomical systems a matter of doctrine and punished deviations.

and in fact I'm thinking it's more likely Sitara's neglect of Töregene is going to result in her taking a big fat L 😔 I was thinking this might be possible as well, but I am really hoping they are not going this direction. While a setback would be a good moment for Sitara's character development, I feel they can still do this while driving forward Töregene's character as well. At the end, Sitara didn't even lie after all. Sorghaghtani is after all planning a coup. But it might even be a problem that Sitara revealed it too early and therefore showed their ace when she didn't have to. And this is something Töregene could teach her. While it is important to get people against one another, information like this is more valuable the less people know about it.

It's Nestorianism , officially "Church of the East". Honestly, the theological debates and arguments of early Christianity may feel bizarre or nitpicky to modern audiences, but if you compare them to how modern fandoms may engage in flame wars about lore, characterization and shipping, it suddenly makes a lot of sense. For people interested in a quick and entertaining look at these schisms, Extra History had a short series on them.

I know some people may be upset about, but all religious are in a way their own fandom. People have their favorites and argue about them. At the very least it seems to ignite a similar area of the brain. Edit: Oh and the Extra History mini series is goated. Anyone curious about denominations, and why Christianity is the way it is now, should definitely check it out. It puts denominations in perspective, and helps to understand why every religion will develop denominations after some time.

I'd say least, actually. As this episode shows, Mongols didn't have issues with Nestorianism, and counted Nestorians among the highest ecchelons of their court. In fact, the early Mongol Empire represented one last golden age for Nestorianism (which was already in decline before them). The ultimate nose-dive for Nestorianism was a three-pronged catastrophe: the Timurid Empire's religious persecution, the Black Death and the rise of the anti-Mongol Ming Dynasty in China.

Basically, most settled kingdoms and empires viewed the Mongols as barbaric nomads, and didn't take them seriously. Horse based nomads were always a problem, but more for border regions than actual conquests. Despite having a very large army, it wasn't really until the conquest of China that the Mongols had their famous significant numbers advantage. The messengers demanded a lot for the Mongols, and kings would be insulted that these barbarians would be demanding so much of them and kill the messenger. Then, without fail, the Mongols would roll up the enemy army and sweep through their territory, sacking cities that didn't surrender. The Mongols really were something of an anomaly. There had been massive nomadic confederations before, like the Göktürk Khaganate, the Kahzar Kahganate, and the Xiongnu empire. But most of the time these confederations were content to stay on the Steppe and extract tribute from their settled neighbors. Sometimes they would conquer northern China, and the Magyars famously conquered and founded Hugary, and the Seljuks conquered Iran, Mesopotamia, and most of Anatolia, but the Mongols were on another level. Nobody had ever seen a nomadic confederation that was capable of so totally defeating everyone they came across before. It wouldn't be until the division of the Empire that they were really ever stopped in any capacity.

I would not say they conquered it, the western half mostly collapsed due to financial reasons and then such people just filled the void. The Franks, Visigoths and other tribes were initially hostile to Rome, but they were incorporated into the Empire as Foederati after respective agreements. Initially Rome paid their military service in food and coin, but as the finances declined the Western Empire granted them land and authority to collect taxes in the cities inside such land. That said, under such agreement the foederati were nominally vassals of the Emperor of Rome, they governed the Roman cities through Roman law, used Roman coins in their economies and accepted the power of the Roman Church (back then there was little separation between Church and State) As Western Rome collapsed following Odoacer coup the Franks, Visigoths and Burgundians moved to fill the vaccuum in power in the Roman provinces they already occupied (Gaul and Iberia). But the new kingdoms mostly built upon the existing Roman institutions while they could. The only tribe that really went rogue were the Vandals, as they settled first in Iberia without authorization and when they saw Rome was using the Visigoths to kick them out they packed their things and invaded Africa (which they ruled until Justinian reconquered the land)

Yes, it does ultimately come from Greek, although it reached English through Medieval Latin, which in turn borrowed it from Arabic. The Arabic al-iksīr was most likely borrowed from the Greek word xērion , meaning a drying powder used for wounds. Arab alchemists adopted and modified the term into al-iksīr to describe a substance associated with transmutation and healing. In this episode, Fatima also referenced the Greek physician Hippocrates, who is celebrated as the “father of medicine” for separating clinical healing from magic, superstition, and religion. Interesting side note: alchemy as a field seems to have developed independently around three major centres: Greco-Roman Egypt, India, and China.

I enjoyed the contrast in atmosphere at the start of the episode and towards the end. Comedy: - Moge realizing Fatima missing again and Fatima's face appearing in the sky. - Fatima trying to assure Boraqchin that she has no evil intentions with the cutest zoomed in face and bright shiny eyes. Cliffhanger: - Fatima trying to raise suspicions on the true intentions of Tolui and his camp - Toregene summoned before Boraqchin without Fatima by the former's side. I feel Fatima might have underestimated Boraqchin. To a certain extent, with age comes wisdom... and doubt.
