They could have made the Sheena getting Mimi’s bag scene even more disturbing and straight out of a horror movie if they had her open the bag before Mimi started healing herself and honestly that’s what I was expecting to happen. Sheena opening up the bag, seeing Mimi’s corpse screaming in horror and being convinced that Mimi had to stop fighting so that she didn’t have to go through this again and again. If you change the story it could have been even more horrifying. If we had never seen Mimi’s mangled corpse get delivered to the doctor before and she healing herself and had Mimi not told Sheena (and us the viewers) that she was immortal if the scene above had happened it would have been even more shocking.

Yeah, I was vocally talking to my monitor, pleading with Sheena to not open the bag. I have no idea how Sheena (or me, quite frankly) would have reacted to that.

That's why usually an upper class man from class 17 would do the test. Mimi is only doing due to a lack of Human resources. And Mimi is very different from any of the other fighters. She's treated as a secret weapon almost, and goes full tilt when fighting because she can just be put back together. She's also emotionally immature and often doesn't fully understand what's going on, and she especially struggles with the concept of death. There is a real risk Mimi ends up obliterating or severely wounding Seiran unintentionally

Well, she doesn't understand the concept of death, BUT she does understand that she's special (the big secret reveal about why "she can't die", if she thought it was common she would just talk about it casually). The question is whether she'll realize the implications of that specialness, i.e. you dying doesn't matter, but others dying is a huge deal. For obvious reasons, she does seem to have a bit of a stunted intellectual development... So who knows what she'll make of this.

This feels like the first episode that’s really gotten up close and personal with the reality of what they’re dealing with. We’ve known it’s happening but haven’t seen it in such detail before. The infirmary scene is clearly extremely unpleasant for her. I think the overlapping flicker of images in the dark is good visual presentation. Oh. Oh no. Sheena and Pandora’s box? Bag? Eh, whatever. I don’t envy Sheena. She can’t fight, she can’t protect Mimi from getting hurt, the only thing she can really do is provide as much support for her as possible whenever she returns. To give her some semblance of home and comfort while she’s not at war. Burn that damn piece of paper right now! Okay, not as bad as I feared but still pretty damn bad. “It’s time to D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-Duel!” Good on you Mimi for being willing to take this seriously but please don’t try TOO hard. The school/orphanage is pretty much just an extended lease on life. You may not die today thanks to them but you will die in its service at some point. But what choice do they really have at this point? The contract has been signed and there’s no way out. And as we heard from Seiran, she can’t justify not trying her hardest to be chosen. It’d be a betrayal of her life, her education and her chance to meet Ari. If I had to pick one word to describe my current feelings, it’d be “Fear.”

Yeah I was fully expecting Sheena to find her in pieces, and was relieved they didn’t go quite that far. I guess the show (thankfully) prefers to rely on imagined rather than overt gore. We’ll see how it goes, but I don’t think Mimi coming back often in a bag means she’s beatable in a one on one duel. I’d hazard most of the times she’s gone down has been facing overwhelming odds, at least from how they’ve talked about her fights.

The entire situation is so fucked up. Just seeing a wartime infirmary filled with children who just got back from the front lines is insane. It gives me the exact same feeling of hopeless dread that 86 did. [ 86 early anime soft spoilers] However, in 86 , the teenagers who were forced to fight weren’t even treated in an infirmary or given a proper education. It’s not much solace given the situation, but at least these children have that.

Yeah and in many ways it’s the nature of the bag that makes it feel so awful and grisly, even when we see Mimi climb out of there bloody but intact. A coarse sack isn’t the ideal way to recover a body and it’s clear the person doing so has to work extra hard each time to make sure he gets all the pieces. The whole setup is indeed quite dystopian, even on those times Mimi has been the main or only “casualty.” What a way to make use of orphans. That they feel so grateful to be given a roof over their heads and food and training just makes it worse. Will be curious if we’ll learn more about the broader conflict or if it’ll remain mostly off camera and left to our imagination.

Receiving your chopped up girlfriend in a sack... that is going to give Sheena some nightmares. And they made Seiran duel against the strongest weapon in the country for the exam? Regardless of whether she wins or loses I think she's still being sent to the frontlines because this war is not going well. I've been thinking the two options in my mind are that Mimi goes too hard (I assume they have guidelines to not seriously injure or kill because otherwise you'd never get new soldiers) I usually don't make posts on threads this old because realistically the chances of my post being seen are really low. However I want to note that in this episode, you can actually read the paper Omi is holding . The fourth point says "No fatal injury shall be inflicted upon an opponent". So yes, it's explicitly part of the rules that the opponents cannot kill each other. It's silly anyways, since it's already been stated in a previous episode that the school does not like pointless casualties. They are extremely short on manpower. They cannot afford to sacrifice students at a whim. Also, military leadership and teachers alike feel bad for the students. But then you can say, "but Mimi does not understand death. She can kill Seiran accidentally". I've been seeing this take a lot in this thread, and it is kind of driving me insane honestly. Mimi is not an idiot; throughout this show it is shown that not only does she have remarkable emotional intelligence, but she is also very talented with magic. She can mimic an enemy's spells from seeing them (she does this twice to show Sheena the kinds of injuries inflicted on her), and she can understand what others feel on an instinctual level. Two good examples of this are the last episode, and this episode. In the last episode, Sheena helped out the boy with putting the book back on the shelf. When Mimi saw this, she understood that Sheena gives attention to people who are struggling, and she became jealous, so almost immediately after, she gets into an 'accident' and needs 'healing'. This is in spite of the fact that she basically didn't become injured from having books fall on her at all, and that she can heal herself. The implication here is that Mimi deliberately manufactured that accident to get comforted by Sheena. In this episode, Mimi lies about not being injured or feeling any pain because she understands that Sheena hates to see her in pain. She also dislikes being in pain herself, which is why she beelines for Sheena every day and tries to make sure she's not bloody when that happens. Mimi understands that being covered in blood is bad. Mimi understands that Sheena will worry for her if she's hurt. Mimi understands what "getting hurt" is. And, on that point, Mimi understands what death is. She knows that people die when they are killed. She's not like some Flandre Scarlet fanon interpretation where she thinks people turn into broken toys when they die. She also understands that it is painful to die. What Mimi does not understand is the weight of death. Mimi is happy to be sent off to battle because that means she is being useful, not because she thinks killing people is awesome. And ultimately, the only reason why Mimi does not understand the weight of death is because she's not allowed to talk to people enough to understand it. All of your understanding of morality and social norms comes from you passively absorbing that knowledge from being raised in human society. Mimi was not afforded that luxury. She has never been able to see someone plead for their life, because everyone she kills is an enemy soldier who sees her as a monster. She has never seen anyone grieve for a dead comrade, because she's never been allowed to interact with her fellow students until now. She understands the physical process of death, and that it is final for everyone but her, but she does not understand that it is meant to be a tragedy because nobody taught her that. Except for the past 6 episodes Sheena has been telling her that. The only way she kills Seiran by accident is if she underestimates the strength of her own attacks, but even if that happens, she absolutely would understand she did something bad.

That sudden art style change when Fran entered the room and saw crying Sheena and Mimi cracked me up, hahaha! Though it's no wonder that both Sheena and Mimi were crying , especially Sheena . I too would be considerably emotionally disturbed if someone gave me a bag with the bloody body of my friend . So it looks like Seiran will soon join the real fighting too , as she's gonna have a test duel with Mimi in order to determine if she's ready. I don't like that, though. I really like her and Ari 's relationship , but now, Seiran is gonna be the prime suspect for becoming another victim of this war, especially since she said that she's gonna give it her all... I really like that opening scene. It's a simple line, "I'm sorry, Sheena.", but it was enough to convey that Mimi is smarter than people give her credit for. She knows that there's no way she can keep her promise, and she has to put on an act to comfort Sheena. I wish we get to see more of Mimi's inner thoughts like this. We finally got to see what it looks like after students come back from a battle , and it's as horrifying as I expected. We've already seen magic regrow limbs, but that does not make the scene less horrible with everyone bleeding and crying out in pain, while some might not even make it. 😢 I legitimately yelped when Sheena was inside Fran's office and we had the teacher who collects Mimi's body parts knock. Fran-sensei could've sent Sheena away and told her to come back later, but the fact that she sent Sheena back there means she probably wanted her to see this. Hearing Mimi call out to Sheena while inside that bloody sack , and then crawl out of it broken and covered in blood was horrifying. Yeah, if I were Sheena, I'd also start crying. I'm just glad that Sheena saw Mimi after she had already put herself back together, not in pieces. Can we just have these girls have fun making flower crowns for each other instead of fighting and getting hurt? T_T So it looks like despite all of her sacrifices, Mimi is no longer enough and they need more students to join the fight. How unfortunate that the first one they're recruiting is Seiran and it looks like she needs to duel Mimi as part of her combat readiness exam. >_ As terrible as this situation is, I think it's amusing that the other students think Seiran is still too young to take the exam , considering Mimi would be biologically younger. I guess since she has already come back from multiple missions, it's pretty much an open secret that Mimi is their superweapon. I absolutely love this scene between Seiran and Ari. She could've died like a feral dog eating rats, but the orphanage gave her a chance to live a somewhat normal life. And if it wasn't for the teacher who found her, she wouldn't have met Ari. I am scared for next week's episode. I'm not worried about something happening to Seiran during her duel with Mimi. I think Mimi is smart enough not to hurt Seiran seriously. I'm more worried about what's gonna happen if she actually passes the exam. >_

I think it is here that for us viewers it pays off that this series has, quite literally. the least amount of worldbuilding in any fantasy series I have ever seen, and quite certainly intentionally so. Like the girls, we know NOTHING about the world outside the oprhanage (apart from necromancy being banned), and if the only thing we get to see of them is their life before and their current life, of copurse we see why they never would want anything else.

Mimi apologizing for breaking her promise to Sheena, trying to play off her injuries as not serious she Sheena doesn’t worry, as well as noticing Sheena was emotionally distressed during the bathing scene last episode really do a lot to show she’s a lot more intelligent than she initially seems. I wonder how much more this is conveyed in the original LN vs the anime? Does it have sections from Mimi’s POV with her thoughts on things vs the anime where you you have to infer it from small scenes?

How unfortunate that the first one they're recruiting is Seiran Rather, it looks like she's been volunteering herself for a while now... As terrible as this situation is, I think it's amusing that the other students think Seiran is still too young to take the exam They probably feel protective of their juniors. But at the same time, they understand Seiran's desire to repay the school. So they'll gossip about it but they're probably rooting for her in the exam. This place and situation breeds a curious way to show caring.

Are they supposed to have training spells that don't do real damage or something because I'm worried about that too. surely they know the risk of not properly explaining to Mimi its not actually to the death when they are so low on forces. Personally I think Seiran is going to lose the battle but they are going to enlist her anyway because they need more fighters but she'll die on her first mission because she wasn't ready.

I wonder how much hurt would the school allow Seiran to be in. Can't see her winning against an immortal opponent who could easily heal an otherwise fatal injury. Having said that, I reckon the exam was about how far could Seiran push Mimi instead of outright winning the duel. It's always great to see more Ari-Seiran moments after it's missing last week. Ari testing Seiran's resolve by acting as if she's about to attack before they tenderly embraced each other.

I'm getting a horrible feeling. Like seeing a train careening at full tilt down the track in the wrong direction. I don't see the other train coming from the other direction yet, but I just know it'll be there at some point Seiran being prepared to be sent into battle, and the earlier episode where Ari was romanticizing the ultimate sacrifice of resurrection magic for a loved one just cannot end well
