So we finally see the true face of Omi-sensei. Yeah, this is getting to her after all. That's one Hell (with a capital H) of a world they live in, I'll tell you that. Tragedy flags raising left and right, I'd better prepare my handkerchief...

That bit with Omi sensei was quite surprising. My initial impression of her in episode one was that her cold, detached demeanor was to showcase how uncaring the adults of this school and world were about the constant deaths of children they force to be soldiers, but in reality it seems she’s someone who truly does care about them and maintains a stern demeanor in hopes that it’ll help them survive. This world seems truly hellish.
Quantum_Croissant
it actually makes the world more grim, if you think about it. If the adults were all evil and sending kids into a pointless war, the series would just be about fighting back and claiming their freedom or something. But if the war is actually necessary, and the adults are forced into it just as much, then there's no easy way out

Oh I never thought the adults were simply evil. I just thought it was a matter of them being desensitized to the brutality of war just like the students are. I wasn’t expecting it to be the case that teachers like Omi genuinely are distraught over the deaths of students and are simply putting on a stern mask in front of the children.

I was thinking the same thing. Initially, I didn’t like her. I thought she simply didn’t care about the children she teaches day after day dying. Then, in episode 2, she seemed to care about Sheena after her injury, so there were signs of kindness. Her breakdown in this episode was so good from a writing perspective. Not only did it show that she cares, but also that she is deeply traumatised by having to train children only to watch them go off and die in war. Her cold exterior seems like a coping mechanism to avoid getting too attached to her students. And similarly to what you said, she is so strict because she wants her students to have the best possible chance of survival, no matter how slim. This world is really cruel... Heavy 86 vibes.

I feel intense dread about how we know basically nothing about the war. Not who the enemy is, not who our side is, not the stated reasons for the war, not the real reasons for the war, not even how long the war's been happening. Think about it, we haven't even heard any wartime propaganda about how the enemy faction is evil or anything, they're just "the enemy". From what we've seen so far, it's uncanny that the war's been going all this time, with the school at the front lines the whole time. Wars have goals, strategic objectives you're trying to obtain. They're expensive, both in money and in manpower, and historically when you hear things like "the hundred years war" it really means "the hundred years in which there were a series of wars related to the same inciting cause". You'd go home after a campaign and wait years before starting the next one. Put it all together and it's really unsettling how the war here is a forever-war where the front lines are always active and nobody even bothers talking about why they're fighting, what they're fighting for. The only answer I can think of is that it isn't an enemy country at all, but a rebellion. An enemy country would be forced to withdraw after spending their resources, build back up for the next campaign, but a rebel force lives inside your country and can put up sustained raiding attacks (which is what we tend to see in the show, rather than a full offensive aimed at achieving a strategic goal) as long as the movement has enough people in it. This would imply that the country the school serves is oppressive enough to maintain a perpetual state of violent unrest and rebellion in their country, which would also go towards explaining why nobody talks about the context of the war in detail, because there's no way to make it look good. If I'm right, this conspicuous absence of any details about the war is building up to a moment where our main cast realizes they've been supporting evil in the fight against good. And everything about their lives is here, in this school, so the fallout of that revelation could easily involve them all losing everything they've ever known.

An immortal who never ages huh? It's Frieren and Himmel all over again. This war is going really badly if Mimi (and some child soldiers) are carrying the war effort on their backs. and its apparently been going on for generations? Also, I didn't realize how close to the frontlines they were until the explosion went off outside the school. Ari and Seiran actually be sharing a single bed like real roommates. Good for them. Really beautiful ending scene in the daisy field. But even then it's still death flags galore; the fence shaped like grave crosses here parallels this scene from earlier , but hey at least Mimi isn't alone now. In flower language, the white daisy symbolizes innocence and purity, childhood and youth, love, new beginnings, and a promise to keep a secret. Coincidentally, the other yuri anime airing this season also has white daisies and crosses, and themes of love and sacrifice.

At least Frieren actually ages just at a glacial pace. Mimi is stuck at that biological age forever . I do think it’s interesting that the war has been brought up in 4 episodes now and we still haven’t had any mention about how long it’s lasted or what it’s even about. I wonder if that’s something we’ll learn eventually or if this is the kind of story that intentionally leaves that information out because it doesn’t really matter to the characters in the story, only how it harms them. That entire scene with Sheena and Mimi at the end just had the overwhelming silence of somber, melancholic beauty to it. Highlighting how Sheena doesn’t have the power to protect me and stop her from having to experience the brutal pain of fighting and dying over and over to protect the other students, but she can still do her best to fill the rest of her life with as many happy moments as possible. One of the best scenes in the show so far.

One of the most interesting works on the ultimate awfulness of immortality is Karel Capek's play The Makropoulos Affair (which was sort of a response to Bernard Shaw's Back to Methuselah, which treated immortality -- or at least super long lives -- as basically a wonderful thing). The war here really does seem like some sort of "Forever War".

One thing I'm curious about after the initial answer. Was Mimi OP as fuck before her mother resurrected her, or did the spell also amplify her power or shove her mother's power into her body on top of her own? Interesting to get a more adult focused episode. And is there a single adult male who isn't hiding his face in a cloak hood?

CitronClassic672
From how it sounded there are several resurrected people like Mimi, and if if that’s the case then the only reason the school would use only Mimi as their secret undying super weapon is because Mimi’s immense power specifically makes it worth it. I’m guessing the other resurrected all had normal levels of magic capabilities and retained that after resurrecting so it wasn’t worth it.

From how it sounded Mimi’s specific utility comes from the fact she was made immortal while also already having extraordinary magic capabilities. I imagine making immortal soldiers isn’t as useful if they’re still average in combat magic. Plus for all we know there could be a kind of Geneva convention in place where both sides agree to not do that anymore. They did say that Mimi and those like her are like relics from a previous age.

Yeah I was puzzling on this too, given how ruthless their overall war effort ethos seems to be. But I guess it’s likely the case that you can’t improve when you’ve been frozen as timeless. So Mimi’s case is exceptional and most youths aren’t as useful due to being kept in mystical stasis.

Also, even if they can somehow get an immortal army, I don't think any government will be that thrilled about this. Weapons of Mass destructions are things you can control easily to ensure you stay in power, an immortal army can just decide to overthrow you and you literally can't do anything about it.

Plus for all we know there could be a kind of Geneva convention in place where both sides agree to not do that anymore. I think that is more likely.

But can you imagine how difficult it would be recollecting all of those bodies and then healing all of them? Especially when healing magic is supposedly pretty rare. I assume Mimi healing herself is only possible due to her own incredible talents. Plus, if the enemy figured out that everyone they killed kept coming back, I'm sure they'd figure out countermeasures. For instance, what happens to an immortal if their head gets stolen? I think it's a lot more impractical then it first seems

Well, if the immortal can't heal themselves then i would think instead of saying it was banned because the sacrificed dying they would say "If their body is blown off the head will live in an eternity of torture" or something like that. Unless they censored it for the children or something.

a thought I just had: it could be that Mimi's ability to regenerate herself is also unique to her, with her high amounts of mana. It does seem like she's casting it with the same pink sparkle effect as when she healed sheena, rather than her body just naturally knitting back together. Maybe a normal resurrected person wouldn't die, but wouldn't be able to put themselves back together again either without a highly skilled healer, so there isn't actually much of an advantage to them

I was more thinking that in this episode they specifically went out of their way to say that very few people have aptitude for healing magic, which mean even less people have aptitude for resurrection magic, so for this to work they have to: Look for someone with aptitude for resurrection magic (which is hard, because you literally only can do it once to test if you have aptitude for it) Have that someone be willing to die Have that someone be fine with cursing someone to be immortal Make sure that spell work first try And on the other side you have to find someone that is: Willing to die for this experiment or already dead to be resurrected And is actually strong with magic so they aren't just immortal jobbers And is actually loyal to their country or can be controlled You just need to many things to align correctly for this to work that I think just erasing the knowledge of how to do it to prevent the opposite side from learning it is much easier.

I also got the feeling that Maud wouldn't be prepared to do the same thing for Seiran with the way she avoided the question. I am curious what would happen if an immortal like Mimi tried to use resurrection magic. Would they (finally) die because it drain all their mana. People were speculating in the previous episode that, because Mimi is already dead, the title is actually about Sheena. However, the way Sheena talked about immortality being cruel, and the reveal that Mimi was a result of resurrection magic, once again made me think that Mimi dying might actually be the endgame, with her resurrecting someone being the only way of achieving that. From a writing perspective, it would make sense for Mimi to break her own immortality by resurrecting someone else, and for maximum emotional effect, it would obviously need to be Sheena. That way, Mimi can be freed from immortality and the title will be about her from the MC’s perspective. No matter how this ends for any of the characters, I have a feeling that it will absolutely destroy me. It gives me the same ominous vibes that I am getting from another show airing this season, [Title] Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky, but in a different way.

Ari romanticizing resurrection magic is scaring me. I feel like that's foreshadowing for some really tragic shit in the future. I noticed in the OP there is a shot where Seiran and Ari hold hands in front of a split background, with Seiran having a city with rubble, and Ari a calm ocean in which she almost seems to blur away

I was gonna comment on the deluge of death flags but honestly the title of the damned show is a death flag all on it's own. So, a little redundant on that lol. I'm guessing the real reason resurrection magic was banned was because powerful assholes who didn't want to die went around kidnapping everyone who was or might be capable of it and torturing them or their families to force them to use it. Do wonder what happened to all the previous immortals if they couldn't be killed though...

After the cliffhanger reveal at the end of last week's episode, this week's opening scene was way more lighthearted than I expected. Sheena really didn't have any time to process what Mimi said and ask her more questions because Mimi immediately got distracted by the daisies nearby. I was worried about Omi-sensei casting a spell while watching over Sheena and Mimi. I legit thought she was there to silence Mimi or Sheena. It turns out, she was just using magic to record their conversation so she can bring it up to Fran-sensei later. Hearing her number get called must've been a terrifying moment for Sheena. You really can't blame her for almost wanting to run after hearing that. Thankfully, she's just being called to the nurse's office with Mimi. So it turns out, I was completely off with my guesses about how Mimi is already dead last episode! Mimi has been brought back by resurrection magic , and it was her mom who sacrificed her life to bring her back. And anyone brought back via resurrection magic is pretty much immortal. I guess Fran-sensei's name is just a coincidence or a misdirect from the author. Bravo to the author then if it was the latter! It's probably safe to assume that not everyone can use resurrection magic, and it's probably lost knowledge at this point. I do wonder what happened to the other resurrected? Fran did say they were problematic relics of the past . At one point in time, someone must've found a way to reverse the spell, or they are still walking alive to this day. Hmm... It's good to know that even the people who are sending the kids out to fight don't really like it either , and it's actually their government who's pushing them to use the students as soldiers. It's also fascinating to learn that conventional soldiers do exist in this world too. Are we talking about swords and spears, or do guns exist in this world? I am interested in what Fran-sensei is trying to do here. She clearly knows that Mimi would eventually tell Sheena about her secret, but she still allowed Mimi to attend as a normal student. Is the goal here to give Mimi a normal life? I feel like that's just half of her plan. I feel like there's more to it than that. I'm glad that we got to see more of Omi-sensei and how she grieves on her own every time a student dies despite her cold appearance. They have a class where they can practice healing magic? How do they even study that? Do they actually kiss each other in that class or are there other forms of healing magic? I'm kinda upset we didn't get to see the actual class! Okay, the scene between Ari and Seiran was really cute , but Ari's comment about resurrection magic makes me think that strong feelings about the person you're resurrecting are probably also needed. Which would make sense for Mimi's case. All that talk about the two of them talking about using resurrection magic on each other is making me nervous, tho. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a heartbreaking scene later on involving the two of them >_ It was adorable to see Mimi and Sheena having fun in that field of flowers. If Fran-sensei's goal is to make Mimi have fun and live a somewhat normal life, then she's definitely succeeding based on Mimi's words. That scene was too cute and peaceful that I am now worried about next week's episode. >_

For conventional soldiers, they're probably using guns and artillery given the students are wearing uniforms that appeared by the industrial revolution to early 1900s. But given the school is located deep in a forest, magic-users probably have the advantage over riflemen with 19th and early 20th century weapons.

I have a feeling that Fran is planning on setting things up to end the war one way or another, and Mimi and Sheena's relationship is the catalyst. Sheena is quite clearly taking on the mother role, and I feel if that were stripped from Mimi she would have a meltdown which would be quite dangerous to the health of those around her. Ari and Seiran are raising so many death flags it's a virtual parade at this point. Hopefully it's just a red herring, but I worry about their future.

Not much happened in terms of major plot movements, but the episode laid down a lot of ominous foreshadowing, like that conversation about whether they'd cast resurrection magic on each other. Sheena's right about the resurrection spell being cruel. Not only did Mimi's mum sacrifice her life, Mimi had spent all these years being dehumanised and only seen as a tool. She'd long forgotten about joy before meeting Sheena. Ari and Seiran having an intimate time again, love to see that! They even got to lock their hands together. I do hope their talk about the resurrection spell wouldn't end up being a foreshadowing. It'd be a cruel twist of fate to have Ari first bring it up, then down the road Seiran would end up using it on her at the cost of her own life.

he'd long forgotten about joy before meeting Sheena. I'd expect the ending of this series to grant Mimi true death if they find a way to halt her resurrection. Being stuck with the body and mind of a child for eternity is very cruel. Eternity would mean she'd be on the planet until the sun turns into a red giant, that's billions of years. As of right now I think it could go in two directions. Either the people the school is fighting eventually develop a means of permanently killing Mimi given how it’s clear how reliant the school is on Mimi for their war effort, or Mimi gives up her own life to resurrect Sheena if she ever ends up dying.

It's fine it's fine; Dead girls need (yuri) love too! Oh damn, they're addressing it! Given it was last episode's cliffhanger, I thought for sure the rest of the conversation would go offscreen hah. She doesn't like being called a ghost! (Try a zombie next; Go through the undead bestiary!) So they were caught... I guess she used the wand to record them! When I first saw it, I thought she was preparing to do something in case Mimi said too much. Please don't talk amongst yourselves... Especially when discussing taboo topics! Damn, saying that right next to her... She has more courage than we thought! (And the teachers might not take too kindly to her planting seeds in Mimi's head...) So is she hundreds of years old? Or did they perform the ritual even if it was banned? (Perhaps a bit of both!) IT? What is IT? They already know she told her about the death, and she figured out the resurrection... So what is the "it" that she hasn't realized? I used to think she wasn't even human (just some kind of machine/entity), the "I'm dead already" could be the cover up to that. Oh damn; I got nervous for a moment! I thought they were coincidentally summoned to battle, where Sheena might tragically succumb to some fatal incident... But they're just getting chewed up by the Nurse, that's fine! (And by "That's fine" I mean "It should've been me!") The thing about taboos is... Once you break them, they don't hold as much strength as they once did! Will there be MORE Mimi? Because when you manage to build a nuke, and it works perfectly... Well, you usuallly don't just build 1 nuke! Yeah... That's the conundrum! She might think "It's not nice!" but is she willing to die, or sacrifice dozens of her classmates, so "it's nice"? It's war, they're pretty much child soldiers, it's never gonna be nice, it's never gonna be fine... Question is, which option is less terrible; Sending Mimi over and over again? Or sending normal kids to die? Hah, Mimi bursting in was pretty funny! That's probably true for more than just "Not having snacks"! Oof.. If she's on their radar now, they're definitely NOT gonna like her floating that kind of idea into Mimi's head; "Hey, immortal war machine that's the sole reason our country isn't getting obliterated, have you ever considered doing something other than fighting?" Well, there's "Good for the country" and "Good for Mimi"! Though if the country is no more, well... That's what I was saying, why do they only have ONE Mimi, going from place to place? Not only it's inefficient, but also, if the attacks increase, she won't be able to handle it anymore... How long till they decide the taboo ain't so taboo after all? THANK YOU! I've been talking about this since the first episode hah. All these things they keep saying "Don't do that, you shouldn't do that, you're not allowed to do that", it's all things that would OBVIOUSLY happen... Yet they wanted to let her into school despite knowing it would happen. So - given they seem to think it's really bad that these things are happening - there has to be some HUGE benefit to letting her in the school, to make up for the truth spilling out and all that... But what's the benefit? Do they want to make her more human? Do they want her to see what she's fighting for (was she getting less enthusiastic?) There has to be a legit reason! HERESY. Math is great! That's some way to put it, "fostering"... That's how they repay the school for... the privilege of being turned into child soldiers and being sent off to die!

Let me just phrase it this way, there’s a reason why, discounting all the ethical issues, using child soldiers isn’t a good idea. Have you ever tried to get a kid to keep something important secret? They’re not exactly known for being tight-lipped. All it took was Sheena telling Mimi they’re friends and she spilled what’s almost certainly a state secret without hesitation. Just telling them about reincarnation magic feels really reckless if you’re going to try and keep it secret. Sure, only Sheena knows that Mimi is dead but the rumors about her being a secret weapon that’s been there for generations are very easy to hear about. Like, they’re not dumb, someone is going to start making at least decent guesses about what’s up with Mimi even without Sheena’s knowledge. Sheena’s probably not going to intentionally spill anything but you can only keep the Mimi in the bag for so long once it’s opened. Something something, pretty much everything Mimi likes, things like rice, daisies and the like are something she got from Sheena because she was never outside enough to find things for herself before. One thing I’m curious about is the timeline of this war and how long the school has been a thing. The faculty were saying that they’re being pressed to put students on the battlefield because statistics prove they’re more effective. I’m just a bit confused because this facility has been around for long enough that Mimi can’t remember the years properly and for generational rumors to form about her. I feel like that implies that it’s been a thing for long enough that there should surely be a decent amount of students that have gone through the entire school system and are fully trained adult fighters by this point. To me it makes logical sense that there should be a buffer of a few grown up generations able to take the heat for the current batch while they train. Just objectively speaking, children aren’t as capable physically and have more psychological weakness than adults. There’s no reason to have them die early before they’re ready. So I can only assume that either, magic training has only been done for a few years, they are the first generation or that the war is bad enough that the older generations that should logically exist are mostly dead already. Maybe I’m just missing something obvious but the system’s details don’t really make sense to me the way they’ve been explained. Anyway, enough nitpicking. Reincarnation magic feels like it’s logically the next step of the standard healing magic. That’s transferring bits of your magic to heal someone. This reincarnation magic supposedly uses all of it to keep someone alive forever. Normal healing is done via a kiss as an act of love so reincarnation can probably be viewed as the ultimate act of love, giving your life to save someone. But it can probably also be viewed as a curse, freezing someone you love in time forever, never able to grow up or move on from that moment. The mere fact that they’re alive is an ever present reminder of you and they will never be able to forget you with your magic flowing through their body to keep them alive. (Feels like something a yandere would do honestly.) To be completely honest, that feels like a goddamn powder keg in a system that creates tightly bound pairs that will not take losing their partner well. We return to our weekly scheduled Ari and Seiran extreme paranoia hours. I just have the feeling that we will be returning to their conversation about the inherent romance in sacrificing everything you are for the sake of saving the one you love and unfortunately probably sooner than any of us would like. (Please don’t begin to make vows about living together forever, I don’t want to have to actually start decorating coffins.) I know I should be focusing on their flirting and how cute it is that they share a bed like true roommates and their cute little dolls of themselves but they just give me so much anxiety that I can’t enjoy it properly.

I feel like that implies that it’s been a thing for long enough that there should surely be a decent amount of students that have gone through the entire school system and are fully trained adult fighters by this point. I'm pretty sure there are, given that there was that cloaked man who retrieves Mimi's body for Fran each time. And there were other adults in the strategy meeting besides Fran and Omi, they might be fighters who graduated from the schooling system. Also, whenever the students get called to war, you can hear their class number, which corresponds to their age. Most of the students sent out are in classes 1700+, which means they're about 17 years old. That's actually older than what most medieval societies considered "adults," so it makes sense that they're probably sending out students that are mostly fully mature in terms of magical prowess.

It's wild that sacrificing yourself equals eternal life..I'd think it'd only be one life..but I guess I'm too FMA brained..and all about equivalent exchange. I always find it funny how much of a antithesis to alchemy the magic in FMA is. Gaining eternal life or turning something into something more valuable than what you started with was supposed to be the entire point of alchemy!

Today the scene of Ali and Lizzy holding hands raised a couple of death flags. I'm now seriously worried that something tragic is going to happen to them soon. Together with the statement that the "enemy" is intensifying the attacks I don't have a good feeling about this. Overall, since episode 1 this show has had this ominous atmosphere that the current situation is only the silence before the storm. And today's episode raised a couple more flags that the situation is going to become dire. Today we saw Omi-sensei's true face. She is not just that cold emotionless machine who doesn't care, but she is putting up a facade to protect her students.
