Bro, even with little. We saw them kissing on the stairs in one episode, and now we're hit with the grey-haired partner being dead. Even like, I think I mentioned it two episodes ago, we have Mimi, who we know at that point is their secret weapon, and they actually say to us ' SORRY IT TOOK A WHILE TO FIND ALL THE PARTS '. (Link to my comment on that...) This anime is so good, BUT it will fuck you hard in the feels.

Gratitude Day? Aren't these just the possessions of all the dead students. The look on Esther's face when she gave Mimi and Sheena the matching dresses... 💀 Oh Sheena revived that plant. Healing magic is apparently rare so Sheena might become a medic like Fran and not have to go to the frontlines. The obligatory yuri bath scene, but it's cute and depressing. Should child soldiers dream of a future when they could just die tomorrow? We also managed to touch on some other philosophical stuff; individualism vs utilitarianism, teaching the value of life to someone who can't die.

Just accept your fate as Mimi's housewifemom, Sheena... I said it before, but this show is masterful at making scenes that will be otherwise cute be sad. Oh, hey! It's the girl from episode 1! ...without her girlfriend... and is being ominous... Going by this scene, I'm going to assume that she is one of the rare people that have healing magic aptitude. la creatura... I joked about it, but this does feel like someone saying goodbye to their partner before they go to war...

Technically, if there isn't someone to gather up all her body parts, could she still come back? What we've seen of her healing factor is that as long as her body parts are still together she can reattach them. But can she regrow entire limbs? Or even regrow a whole body from a drop of blood? There are levels to a healing factor and we haven't yet seen the fullest extent of mimi's immortality/healing factor

I don't think she knew it was jealousy. Honestly, there's a LOT she doesn't know, I think her interaction here with Sheena definite shows. She's processing jealousy, physical comfort, and who knows what. Her face is expressionless because she kind of just doesn't know how what she's feeling, it's all a surprise to her. I'm pretty sure her expressionless during some interactions is in a ways tied to psychology and trauma. I would love to see Psyculturists cover this show and more about Mimi and the physical tells of her. You see a lot of her played for comedy, but I think deeper down, if you know what you look for (a professional psychologist), you'll see a whole shit load of trauma.

I'm pretty sure we actually saw hints of Sheena magic around plants as early as episode 1 or 2, though it was very vague then. This seems to be definite confirmation that her magic isn't as straightforward or weak as Sheena believes. I'm wondering if it will be discovered and as she (and others) discover her potential she'll be forced or prepared to be another weapon alongside Mimi, though I'm also not sure if that fits the stories themes so far...

This is really an hidden gem, the yuri is just an extra I’m not so into yuri that I will watch something specifically because of the tag, but if the story is good, I will watch pretty much anything. This story instantly hooked me with its very dark tone and setting. All the cute and fluffy stuff adds so much contrast to the reality they are living in. It builds up this sense of dread that something really bad is going to happen to break up the happy moments. I always welcome stories that have the potential to emotionally wreck me, and I knew from the first episode that this was one of them. where sheena questions the values of the system. I really liked that. Not only is the setting dark and grim, but the writing is really good too. Mimi is such a carefree person, and while Sheena wants to protect that, she is visibly uncomfortable with Mimi being able to kill loads of people without a shred of empathy. However, as Fran was alluding to, if Mimi isn’t a killing machine, the other students would need to participate more in the war. The inner conflict within Sheena, between what she wants for Mimi and what she wants for herself and the other students, is really well done.

I think exactly the same thing. I'm into Yuri, because usually a Yuri romance is able to be more entertaining than the average romance, sadly in this period romance is getting more and more similar to isekai slop, but ofc there are always good anime. I saw a comment on My Anime List saying that this anime was terrible because the two main characters are childrens having strong romantical and sexual tension, and that there was no need to set everything in an orphanage and it would have been better if the character were adult. And also that healing with kissing was completely outrageous because the characters are minors, so it's no appropriate. First of all if you think that the relationship between Mimi and Sheena has much sexual tension you're the strange one, because nobody except you find it that way. Plus if the characters weren't 14 years old all of the interactions wouldn't make sense. The anime works because the characters are just children experiencing the horrors of the war, it wouldn't be half as tragic if it wasn't. I also made an interesting theory in another comment yesterday: My theory? Mimi will do the same spell her mom did to her to save sheena's life, effectively passing the curse to her, and returning mortal. And so the two live togheter until mimi's death, so "Till Your Dying Day". Call me crazy, but this is the only solution that would make sense to "erase" the curse, and it's hinted multiple times already because Sheena was asked more than once "Would you take mimi's responsibility and go to war insted?".

My theory? Mimi will do the same spell her mom did to her to save sheena's life, effectively passing the curse to her, and returning mortal. And so the two live togheter until mimi's death, so "Till Your Dying Day". Yeah that is similar to my theory. My theory is that Mimi will use resurrection on Sheena in the end of the series, but Mimi will die right away. "Till Your Dying Day" is until the sad finale.

What you said makes more sense, I agree, a comment pointed out this in one of my previous comments. But I think that exchanging immortality for saving a life is pratically the same as exchanging her own life (I'm using a very fullmetal alchemist logic here, but it kinda makes sense). Also this is a fictional story, so I think that it would be more romantic and poetic if she actually died after living the rest of his life with sheena

With the underlying tone and themes of the story, I think a bittersweet ending is more likely. But maybe I’m just too conditioned by tearjerker anime, and this will subvert my expectations. However, I do also think that it would be very meaningful from a writing perspective if the immortal killing machine sacrificed her life for the girl with what seems to be healing magic, and empathy for everyone, including their enemies. Then again, that could also be my love for tearjerker anime speaking.

This discussion just reminded me of a really horrifying thought: if ressurected people can ressurect others but die instantly for it, what would happen after Mimi tries to revive Sheena? It's possible that Sheena could revive Mimi again, but at the cost of being dead herself. That would mean they're both cursed with immortality, except they can't even be alive alongside the other because they'll be dead after using ressurection magic. There could be an endless loop of them dying and reviving each other, yet never being able to be with each other because for one to live, the other has to be dead. I think that would be the most tragic outcome I can think of...

That gratitudation day is grim, my smile dropped so hard when I realised that probably most items there to take were from roommates who hadn't returned from the battlefield.. The blending of cute × grim, contrasting and juxtaposing it, is done excellently. So far I'm enjoying the way it handles violence and the nuanced (lack off) glorification there off, but we'll have to see and wait if it turns out anyway as modern Japanese militaristic propaganda. Even if it were, the yuri is good. That water crown is adorable.

Is the blondie tallying scores from the exam a boy? Well, uh, that's unexpected. I know there are boys in this orphanage/magic academy, but I did not expect any of them actually to be relevant. And since Haru has been named , it looks like we're gonna see more of him later. I don't know how the Yuri Purists will feel about this. 😆 I didn't think we'd see kissy girl from Episode 1 again. That scene went from really cute to immediately depressing. The fact that she's giving away a bunch of clothes and mentions that she'll never wear them together again probably means her partner recently died 😢 It turns out Gratitude Day is not just a day to show gratitude to the school by cleaning, but also an event where students can clean out their rooms and give away unneeded items, especially for those whose roommates have passed away. Fuuuuuck. 😢 So when Sheena touched the wilted plant , she somehow revived. I've also noticed that there were floating green sparkles when she was giving Mimi headpats earlier. I wonder if Sheena now has access to magic she didn't have after Mimi used recovery magic on her? Hmmm... Sheena and Mimi's bath scene was pretty funny. I especially loved it when Mimi styled her hair the same as Fran's 😆 As much as I think it's important for Mimi to learn that war is bad and taking the lives of other people is terrible, I feel like this is a horrible idea. With Mimi taking Sheena's words to heart , I'm worried about what's gonna happen the next time Mimi goes out into combat. >_ This is such a fucking dilemma. Fran-sensei and all of the teachers feel the same way about sending Mimi to battle. They think it's not right, but they have no other options. It's either send Mimi or drag all of the students into battle, , which would include Sheena. 😐 I do still wonder what Fran-sensei's plan is for having Mimi live with Sheena . I already mentioned this last week, but she really does seem to care about Mimi and wants her to live a normal life. That final scene... I am so fucking scared of what will happen when Mimi comes back next episode.

That whole conversation with Fran-sensei honestly only made me wonder why exactly the school even exists in the first place and why they have to send children into battle? Idk if they addressed this already in a previous episode and I missed it, but it's odd that they have this school set up to train students in magic and send them into battle when we can see that the adult teachers are capable of using magic. I'm not sure if the enemy troops using magic are kids as well, but the ones we've seen so far appear to be adults. I can understand how Mimi is especially skilled but why keep sending other students to fight?

I guess my takeaway from this episode is that in a strange way, Sheena is kind of privileged. She’ll of course always worry but it’s never really in doubt that Mimi will come back. She’ll never be placed in the position of being left behind because her now designated partner is an immortal. There’s of course a whole host of other issues that comes with her status but she doesn’t have to fear that sudden hollowness of being alone. Which could maybe have consequences for her in the future. Hypothetical “Why do you think you understand?! Your other half can never leave you behind!” I didn’t like the concept of Gratitude Day from the start but the reality of it’s gotten even more depressing. Pretty much just a hand me down market of the stuff left behind by everyone during the previous year. But I guess to the kids that live there, it’s the closest thing to a festive holiday they have. Like, the atmosphere is kind of colorful and cheerful but still has the sad undercurrent of the fact that they’re giving away the possessions of the departed they were closest to. I wonder how many of their personal items are these sorts of heirlooms passed down through the generations of surviving partners? For example, Esther’s shirt clearly being one of a pair and she can’t really stand to keep it without her partner around to wear the other. So it’s really just easier for her heart to hand them both off to another pair where they can still fulfill their original purpose. More depressing thoughts I guess being that every named character seems to have someone they’re really close to far beyond everyone else. I can only assume that it’s a generally accepted fact of life that they won’t make it to adulthood. It’s probably normalized for most of them to latch onto someone like their roommate to cope with their situation and get whatever taste of a “normal” relationship and emotional support they can before it’s too late. I’m really not in the mood to appreciate Mimi’s antics properly anymore but she is very cute and wholesome together with Sheena. Also take note of how casually she uses magic, even the really dangerous kinds and how easily she learns them and makes up new stuff on the fly. On the topic of magic, something happened with the plant after Sheena touched it. It seems likely that the specific kind of magic that makes things grow is her speciality. Not like that’s likely to be appreciated much in a war context. At this point I’m really buying into Fran having some sort of specific goal by incorporating Mimi into the school properly. More than just getting her adequate socialization I mean. Her discussion with Sheena feels too pointed to just be her lamenting the unfortunate realities of war.

I mean a big part of Sheena’s dilemma is that she is privileged but also has a firsthand view of the suffering others have to endure to maintain her privilege. Sure she’ll never have to worry about losing Mimi nor Mimi her, but she has to constantly witness her partner fighting, killing, dying, and coming back over and over indefinitely. All that while knowing that despite how much she wants to help Mimi she isn’t physically strong enough to protect her, nor courageous enough to put her own life in danger for hers. You know the story is kind of giving me similarities to “The Ones Who walk Away From Omelas.”

That is the crux of the issue isn’t it? Being caught between a rock and a hard place. She fears death and war, she doesn’t want her and those around her to die. But after meeting Mimi, she’s now intimately familiar with the person whose existence preserves the relative peace and safety she knows. The knowledge of her and everything she’s going through to keep them safe doesn’t allow her conscience to ignore it. But she’s also not strong enough to take her place and she certainly can’t stop the war. She’s limited to providing Mimi with these small moments and gifts of kindness and affection in between one fight and the next. I feel like that has to be a form of torture in its own right. Omelas ends with giving you the information that sometimes, some of its inhabitants leave the town behind, unable to accept the status quo. They disappear somewhere into the unknown, never to be seen again. The narrator makes a point that no one knows where they’re going and I’m equally uncertain what the equivalent of leaving Omelas is for this story.

Also, Fran said the right things here. Unfortunatelly, wars happern constantly and someone does have to fight. At least Mimi can do it instead of them sending even more pupils to die. This actually feels a bit close home as there is war in my homecountry and one of my school frienmds already died onm the front. But I myself is not fit for fighting and best I can do is support the people back home when needed.

DOES THIS LOOK LIKE THE FACE OF MERCY? (She should go to the next battle like that!) That's a good question! Because (for better or worse) Mimi's life is already decided for her, and she doesn't really argues any of it (until Sheena puts thoughts in her mind?) But Sheena can't fight... Does she have a plan for the future? If things get bad enough that she's forced to fight, she may not HAVE a future in the first place. Me when I clean It's so much more fun to just check out old stuff you didn't even remember you had, than to clean it! And what if it meant death for her? Does she think Mimi being dead is preferable to Mimi being forced to fight endlessly? (This might sound like a rhetorical question, but it's not; I've always been on the side of "Immortality is a curse, not a blessing", but what does Sheena believe?) And for today's episode of "My Dress Up Mass Murderer.."! Are these like... The stuff from dead soldiers? One girl said she left some stuff there, but there seems to be a lot... Is she asking the plant, or Mimi? She thinks she can bring back the plant to life/to bloom (and did) if there's even an ounce of life left... Does she think she can do the same with Mimi? And... Is there, an ounce of life somewhere in there? She's coming to her straight away now, instead of going to Fran. Will they be okay with this? She'd rather take a bath with her, than to go to Fran for the debrief and all... This may not be an issue, but what happens when someday she says "I'd rather stay with Sheena and bake cookies, than going to war?" On one hand, obviously they wouldn't be pleased by this change of heart... BUT on the other hand (something I've been saying since the start) they HAD to know it would happen someday, that she might grow closer to people, talk about how she's dead, and that someday, eventually, she may turn against war... So what's the plan then? If the answer is "They have no plan", then that's incredibly short sighted to introduce her to people like that. Unless there's some benefit to gain from this. Because of course something like that was always bound to happen at some point. Perhaps it'll happen sooner than expected, due to Sheena putting these thoughts in her mind... But they had to know it might happen SOMEDAY, no matter what. So either they're the most incompetent organization in history... OR they have a reason to believe that the benefit of having Mimi make friends, outweight the risk (inevitability) of her developing a conscience, having doubts about her mission, wanting to do things other than fighting, etc..! And yup, that's also something I've been talking about... Sure, let's give Mimi a real life (or a peaceful, lasting death?), and then... What? And then they lose 10 girls a day til the end of time? Or until their nation is completely annihilated? Sheena's an idealist, she thinks about an utopia, not reality... She dreams of a world where Mimi and all the others can just stop fighting because it's not a great life. If they stop fighting, they won't have a great life, they'll just have death. Mimi having to fight for their sake is sad, but how many girls is she willing to let die, to give Mimi a day off? Is Sheena herself willing to die, just so Mimi can rest a few minutes (pretty much all Sheena could save her)? Hah. Code word for "The 'grown ups' have to talk about you!" Taking things WHERE though? WHAT IS THE END GOAL! Damn, Sheena, I know she's immortal, but why would you give her death flags like that?

Then it could turn into a rescue mission sending even someone like Sheena in As tragic as it would be (I imagine many would die), it would be a learning opportunity for Sheena, about why Mimi is a 'necessary evil' and not something she should try to stop; It's war, there's no "perfect solution", there's just the bad option (Mimi fighting forever) and the REALLY bad option (all the girls getting slaughtered on a daily basis)

I felt a bit annoyed with Sheena’s conversation with Fran this episode. Like girl you were already told why Mimi fighting is the lesser evil in this scenario. Did you really have to be reminded again? Though I guess her takeaway from the previous conversation was that Mimi fight forever because she’s immortal unlike the other students, and didn’t really internalize the fact that her fighting is what takes the burden off of the other students like her who don’t have to. It’s annoying but makes sense for her character. Also, you’d think after this point Sheena would finally get it through her head, but maybe she really needs to see how awful the situation gets without Mimi to internalize it.

So even if she doesn't want the alternative (Sheena herself being sent on the frontlines) she also doesn't want Mimi to being sent. So she's looking for a solution that doesn't exist. (Well, it doesn't exist at this time , it might exist at a later point in the future... But bottom line is, she simply can't accept the status quo; In her mind, "It's bad so we have to fix it" and there's nothing else to it!)

Yeah, Sheena planting that idea in her head is bound to cause major damage. There's also the possibility that instead of being captured, her holding back causes many of her comrades to die and she gets blamed for that. And Mimi in her innocence says that it was Sheena who told her all lives matter and now she's in deep trouble because she indirectly killed people by giving Mimi ideas, and if some of those dead are her classmates and people find out, now some might vent their anger on Sheena. It snowballs.

Poor Esther. She probably wanted to get rid of the dress because it reminded of a foregone time with her roommate/partner, but she decided to make someone else happy instead of just throwing it plain out. A part of her must’ve been a little happy that these dresses will stay together as a matching pair with Sheena and Mimi. On a different note: given how many of the 16s get called on each time, lots of the older students must be perishing in battle.

I have a bit of a fascination with depictions of this sort of heavily bonded pairs forming in environments where they’re almost certainly temporary in fiction so this show is really right up my alley. There’s a lot of interesting layers to them. The stressful environment where threats to their lives are ever present forms such a tight bond that it would be unsustainable in the normal outside world. I imagine that it’s very common for the students to be paired up with their roommates for combat training and so they naturally grow to be extremely close to them. When you’re relying on a partner to watch your back in combat constantly, one would expect that after a while it becomes almost second nature to read them. Any mistake can have devastating consequences so with time, you just end up so in sync with said partner that you’re almost one. It’s probably incredibly easy for this partnership in combat to grow outside of it as well. When you spend so much time with someone and know them so well, a very strong emotional connection forms. And I believe that with the reality of death being so close at hand, a lot of these pairs rely on each other for support which can very easily evolve into an extremely closely bound romantic relationship. Also, with how unlikely it is to make it to adulthood, I can definitely see it being normal for strong relationships to form quickly. When any day could mean death, I imagine that it’s the norm to take the chance to experience love while you still can and that one doesn’t have the luxury to be hesitant with one’s feelings for someone. For an example we’ve seen more of, think of Ari and Seiran. You never see one without the other right next to them, their interactions both in combat and outside of it prove that they know each other extremely well and while they spend time with Sheena and Mimi, they’re clearly closest to and most comfortable with each other. I can only imagine that Esther and her partner with the white hair were similar to that. She wasn’t that close with anyone else and now that she’s gone, it’s like half of her went with her. My final point that I’m trying to make is that this environment naturally creates extremely close knit pairs that are likely to struggle more than the average person with losing their partner. The factors that make these characters stick together so much and the deliciously tragic hurt when the ephemeral nature of their bond brings it to an end is so addicting to me despite the fact that I keep hurting myself with them. (Uh, yeah, it’s late, sorry if the rant isn’t very coherent.)
