Invading the neutral nation will lead to notUS to join the fray, and will technically start the world war, on which the empire admitted they have no way of winning. They can punch, but it is not a KO punch.

There would definitely be hawks who want to join, but as it is with nations, they'd prefer not to fight. The lend-lease gives them valuable data and goodwill, and a possible huge payout in the future. The volunteers are great propaganda for being involved without actually being involved since that unit consists of non-notUS people. Their current stance of being neutral whilst clearly playing favourites is the best outcome for them. All of the benefits, none of the losses. There are always hawks wanting war, but unless something major happens, they'd be content with how things play out. After all, it seems that their investment will pay off big time too.

I don't think any nation had the power to force another country into assisting them in a war. The world was a lot more fractured back then, and foreign wars were other peoples problem. Of course, the Empire is way too strong and notBritain and notFrance feared the rise of another hegemon in Europe. Which is why they attacked the Empire, and why they won't accept the Empires terms for ending the war. No consessions or reparations means the Empire will only grow in power and dominance on the continent.

Yes I think they were in fact offered these conditions before. But the longer the war drags on the more the sunk cost starts playing on both sides. That's why the Ildoan says that too much blood has been spilled. Just as the Empire sees not paying reparations as a huge offer, so would the other side. And that side is winning the war of attrition, so they're fine with not ending the war.

Nah, the Germans were screwed. As early as 1890s the German General Staff determined they wouldn't last 7 years against Britain and France together just simply because their ability to make ammo and food at the same time would fall apart. So "If you go to war with Britain and it's a stalemate, we're doomed" is what they determined. In 1910 a review of their plans also had the same conclusion. So of course, their "genius" plan was to invade a neutral country. To the surprise of perhaps only the Germans, Britain actually cared. I'm a bit tired of people thinking of 1918 as "evenly balenced" since it wasn't and the pre-war Germans even knew it.

false for both WW1 and WW2, also this series is more about WW2 Where germany overcommitted to their blizkrieg strategy to the point where once their opponent built their defence they couldn't break them. in this type of situation the best bet was to get fast one single nation or at most two. like if Germany invaded poland and france then consolidated they would have been much more fearsome in the long run.

It's a different culture in a different time, people were glad to die for their country during World War 1. When Germany negotiated their real life surrender in WW1 the people including the soldiers were angry with it which's why the stab in the back myth started. If anything the politicians were the sensible ones and the people and the soldiers unsensible ones who wanted to keep fighting. And war is but an extension of politics in the first place.

The Empire bit off more than it could chew and now it’s choking. I don't think this framing is correct. The empire was attacked and, as Calandro finally said it out loud, this is a punitive war towards The Empire, just like Germany in WW1. Their only way out was always through extreme military might, because the objective was always the destruction of The Empire. I think its also very telling that Calandro is straight up denying reality in a very comfortable way when he denies that The Empire got attacked first.

Yea this is one of those cases where so much blood has been spilled and the war has reached far beyond the initial conflict that really no one actually gives a shit who shot first anymore. Not Germany might have been invade first but they proceded to go way beyond that conflict, many time towing just up to the lines of violating international law. They are suffering the consquences of thier own damn actions and the rest of the world is hardly going to pity them when they come crawling to the negotiating table. I mean come on, they are actively having behind the scenes of invading their ONLY ally because they are desperate for some kind of win.

Calandro isn't saying the Empire wasn't attacked. He's saying the Empire unleashed a disproportionate response in light of being attacked. And worse, they took out three whole countries and bloodied two more in the process. Then, they initially refused peace when fair terms were offered. They may not have started this war, per se, but they escalated too much to claim innocence. That's what scares the rest of the world.

I think its also very telling that Calandro is straight up denying reality in a very comfortable way when he denies that The Empire got attacked first. I may be misremembering, but I'm fairly certain part of Calandro's point is in the Allies' view, the Empire overreacted to a border incursion. These things happen all the time (these days) and the Empire was fully aware that both parties were practicing brinksmanship - they were guilty of as much as well. To the Allies, the Empire was the one who blew the whole damn thing to the sky, and to some degree they're right because the Empire struck first blood in response to the border violation.

It's the narrative, because it's politically convenient. The Allies would handily give the Empire the benefit if it was the Entente they were concerned about. But the Empire is a relatively new arrival to the scene of international politics, it's strong and united, and an obvious threat to the established balance of powers. Which is why the Entente attacked, why Norden attacked and the Russy Federation, along with the Allied Kingdoms. And it's how the notUS will get itself involved eventually too. A Empire the size of Europe will be far more difficult to deal with, than several bickering powers.

It hardly was a war against Entente, it was a complete destruction and it was not even close. They didn't just go to war against them. In the Franco Prussian war the Prussian terms were so bitter to the French that once they saw the writing on the wall, there was serious consideration of fighting until there wasn't a France anymore just to kill as many Prussians as possible. For context the reparations were calculated to be inflation adjusted to what Revolutionary French armies did to German speaking territories (the French armies were infamous for being harder on civilian populations compared to 18th century standards... or even 15th or 16th century non-30 Years War non-Deluge Standards), except that 70% of the damages were on Habsburg lands. And Prussia decided France should pay for that. Not to Austria (the ones who suffered the most) but to Prussia.

actually germany was only a few years away from a nuke according to historians. and since wars back then took decades, it'd be pretty feasable to say that nukes from germany would be deployed within that timeframe, and probably faster due to magic tech. so if germany makes it, it will win. America won't join in the war unless japan attacks it, which it doesn't in this world because the empire did not have japanese allies, or any at all.

actually germany was only a few years away from a nuke according to historians. They were not. They had none of the infrastructure needed to do it. While the scientists on the American side thought that Germany would be working on it, it was not really being funded on the level that was needed to get one done.

Interrogation + covert surveillance of German scientists and engineers after the war, while they were detained in the UK, indicated most of them were incredibly shocked that the US even managed to assemble a single viable device in such an absurdly short time frame, let alone two fully-deployable bombs plus however many live test/prototype units they thought they may have expended along the way.

I paused when von Rudersdorf read the letter and transcribed the text. As I already noticed, it is actually in German and reads as follows: "Bericht über die Friedensverhandlungen Die gegenwärtigen Friedensverhandlungen sind ohne Ergebnis geblieben. (Report about the peace negotiations – The current peace negotiations have remained without results. Under the current circumstances a continuation of negogiations is deemed pointless.)

A side note to this episode that I really came away with is that the Empire desperately needs some ACTUAL FUCKING DIPLOMATS! Like the entire scene at the table is an example of why soldiers are not diplomats. They fundamentally struggle to understand the broader international picture and because of that they can't really negotiate. The fact that he went away from the negotionats not thinking "We need to rethink our entire plan" but "Diplomacy is pointless" is a critical example of the failure. Plus he displayed a deep ignorance of the mood of the rest of the world to Ildoan who if they are smart are absolutely going to make note of that and prepare for the Empire to act irrationally. (IE: Invade their borders in some sad attempt at sending a message to the rest of the world)

You're not wrong, but they needed actual Diplomats at the beginning of the war. They finally fired the idiot who was so far up his ass in propaganda that they couldn't find a way out anymore. But it seems the rest of his staff is still in the picture and the new leadership in foreign affairs is desperate for some people outside of these nepo baby hires. At this point I'm assuming the Foreign affairs department was staff by the Emperor's Kids or something and no one had the guts to say anything bad about the Empire to him till the entire empire was about to fall apart.

Maybe I’m looking too much into it, but with how it was framed, with the railing blocking the tabletop from our view of the meeting on the roof, I feel like it was symbolising how the Empire did not bring anything to the table practically to the meeting And yeah, kinda ironic the Empire’s strength is it’s downfall now. They brought a lot. The last proposal was a ceasefire along existing lines, citizens in occupied areas can vote to stay independent or join the Empire. It sounds it was mostly with the Russy but I doubt the Allied Kingdom could do much in case the Federation has enough.

Apparently the allies didn't even hear the proposal as Rerugen told him the conditions at that moment. The Russy haven't really accomplished anything, the Allied Kingdom lost the core of their second fleet, the francois are playing in the sand but yeah ok, the Empire left. I hope there is some spice in the desert to rebuild their army. And the Entente is out for the count. So hm well, if your opponent offers to go back home and give you back everything, you go on your knees, thank God and take it.

Rerugen has a point, as well. This whole mess started when the Entente got aggressive with the border. They DID invade, and while the Entente didn't expect full blown war, sending your army into another nation, unannounced and unprovoked, is most definitely an act of war. Then Not-France got involved for the same reason as Not-England: fuck Not-Germany. It's exactly as the pasta muncher said. By fighting 5.5, taking out 3, and holding the line against the others... Not-Germany has scared the shit out of hte rest of the world. If Not-Germany survives this war, everyone is worried they will just lick their wounds and come back for a round 2. Even though they were defending themselves, refusing that first peace treaty killed any trust that they'll accept any true peace for the future. They are too strong, and too belligerent.

I mean Empire ARE idiots for not making peace already. The “occupied areas can vote” just seems like the opposition does not want to hand the empire ANY land at all. Since all the conquered land previously was occupied by the Kingdom and probably still has native people living on it most votes would asumingly not be in the favor of the empire so Empire would just not gain much land. Honestly if they offered money instead perhaps there could have been peace

Diplomacy sure wasn't easy. Von Rerugen fought hard to secure conditions that the rest of the top brass consider utter humiliation, and yet the Ildoans said it's not enough. Appreciate Calandro's candour, now von Rerugen's aware how much the Empire's feared which led to the drive to see their downfall. Now that the pen route had been effectively closed, the sword route's the remaining one. It'd definitely come with a huge toll but I can't see any other way.

So, Empire's top brass want a favoured peace treaty - which is simply impossible. Rerugen then proposed a "Set Zero" condition - from Empire's perspective, not good, but not bad. But to the world, seeing them basically say, "Hey, everything under the bridge, we cool m'kay?" is just not enough. They want punishment. Poor Rerugen, must really suck to be in his situation - returning home to tell everyone that "We're f*cked".

Now von Rerugen's aware how much the Empire's feared which led to the drive to see their downfall. Makes you wonder if they'll reflect on the course of the war and pinpoint the biggest mistakes. Maybe the biggest problem was attacking in the first place and they shouldn't have been so quick to start the war after the initial border violation. They needed better diplomacy there.

The biggest mistake was, by far, rejecting the previous terms from the Federation. Back then they were fighting on 3 fronts and unsure about a fourth (Ildoa). They could've reduced that to 2 fronts (Ildoa would've been happy to have been the party to broker the peace), which could have allowed them to maybe even win totally-not-africa entirely. Instead, now they lost one front (totally-not-africa), they are in the process of losing the west, conceeding the east, and are very threatened on the Ildoan front. And the only peace that they can offer is paying reparations and conceeding territories on probably all fronts.

Finally, the Empire has come to the understanding that the war needs to end right now , even if they have to offer heavy concessions. But no, they're still completely fucked up .
