For a second there, they almost made me feel bad for Mami. She basically grew up in a household where her father had pretty much decided on her future, but when she finally found actual happiness with her first boyfriend, her father wanted to put an end to it because he already had an arranged marriage planned for Mami. So instead of continuing the fight and becoming a better person than her father, she just gave in and decided to take out her anger on happy couples. This just makes Mami look worse. Didn't she even consider the fact that her father must've threatened her boyfriend and forced him to break up with her?

Mami's backstory was actually incredibly interesting. I always like flashback montages that show gradual changes, that someone's original self lasted a long time and that it took a lot to create the worst version. Some say the backstory just makes them hate Mami more, which is fine, but the backstory does make her a lot less of an evil just 'cuz cartoon villain. Trauma and bitterness can make people pretty horrible.

Mami may be messed up, but she's still easily one of the best characters in this series (arguably the best) for making the plot more interesting. The more the series goes on, the more I can't be mad at her even though she is objectively doing bad things at the present time. Chizuru and Kazuya just be spinning in circles for the series so long whether in anime or manga, so at least she adds the spice. lol

Jeez. No wonder she's such a psycho. I don't get it Subway! (Or a knockoff thereof) None of your fucking business? Just like all the rest of everything? And he's the director and producer of her first movie, no less. And the tiny matter of saving her from drowning that time, no big whoop Putting *her* on the spot?? She came out to this resort on her own volition and her own dime, to insert herself into your ~~fun vacation~~ **life**, and now demands to drag you around and make you do whatever she tells you Nothing much, just dying happy, is all

To the haters: Welcome back. To everyone else: We finally have more content. --- At least we know why Mami is the way she is now. Her father made her into a miserable witch and she's taking it out on happy couples. And to think I actually felt sorry for her for a minute. I have to wonder though. If Taro is the only one she truly ever loved and felt happiness with why did she even agree to date Kazuya? Spread the misery? Either way it's only an explanation. Not an excuse. She chose to continue to be miserable instead of getting back out there and looking for the next Taro. She had already rebelled against her dad once. It would've only been easier the second time. It was good to see Chizuru finally stand her ground and not go along with Mami. I wonder what Kazuya and Chizuru are going to do about this. Really all they would have to do is Grandma Nagomi that Mami is Kazuya's crazy ex that's trying to come between her grandson and her angel and Grandma Nagomi would have Mami dealt with in short order, but that's not what we're here for lol.

It's nice to finally et more insight into Mami's character and why she acts like this. Also they're still at a resort so still a convenient excuse for swimsuit fanservice! We now return to our regularly scheduled confrontation between Mami and Chizuru as Mami "rents" Chizuru out to force her to tell the truth. Is it finally time for the cat to come out of the bag? The OP is very on-point with the tropical resort location with all the girls in tropical dresses dancing and having a good time! Though Mami lets the mask slip for just a brief second. Either way, it's a fun OP. Mami came from a well-off family, one where she and her brother were meant to be on their best behavior and act in a way befitting their fathers' expectations at all times, lest their mother bear the brunt of any failure. Mami never really second guessed any of it as she just went along with what her father put before her...an older childhood friend, going to an all girls' school, doing nothing to stand out...until she met Taro. Taro was her first boyfriend, and the first thing Mami ever did in her life that was all her own. She kept the relationship a secret from her parents and she genuinely seemed in love and truly happy for the first time in her life. She truly felt free and like she could finally step out of the cage her father put her in. But, alas, her father would not let her be with Taro. In fact she already has a fiance that meets with her fathers' expectations (her "childhood friend"). And Mami protesting only ends with her getting slapped by her father. Such a cruel and uncompromising man...but there was nothing Mami could do. Especially when his dad makes Taro break up with her. And so Mami figured that love and happiness are just societal constructs that don't matter or mean anything, dismissing her relationship with Taro as just a "rebellious phase," and projecting her negativity and depression on everyone else...which is probably partially why she's so zeroed in on Kazuya and Chizuru's relationship. I'm sure that close-up of Ruka's chest and butt in a bikini are of vital importance to the PLOT, but Ruka wants to get in on the main plot and prevent Kazuya and Chizuru from doing anything together. But she still has to deal with Kuri and the things left unresolved between the two of them. Ordinarily Ruka would probably happily ditch him...but when she sees how unpopular and mocked he is, she can't help but stay with him. Probably the nicest thing Ruka has ever done. And Kuri, for his part, truly does care about Ruka. I see that Mami still fully intends to throw Kazuya under the bus, though Chizuru won't accept that or Mami insulting the Kinoshita's (I mean, the family practically worships her!). She doesn't want Mami to force them to reveal everything until they've talked with Kazuya...but Mami isn't budging. Is it wrong to maintain a lie if it brings someone happiness? Or is that happiness nothing more than a farce brought upon a lie? Especially knowing full well that Chizuru was never able to be honest with her grandmother in her last moments. Uh oh! Chizuru rejected Mami! Mami looks absolutely ticked off! This might be a defcon red moment!

Here we go to season 5 of the biggest trainwreck of an anime rom-com ever. No wonder that Mami is such a psycho with such an upbringing. But in the end it is her choice to be that miserable that she goes out of her way making other people miserable. "If I can't have it, nobody else should either!" It's always the same: It might be an explanation, but it can never be an excuse. Let's see how long it takes until the first naggers come here to complain about the shittiness of this show. If you made it to season 5 and still expect some serious level of character and story development, then it's absolutely on you!
