I don't think he denies her being a sweet girl or that he dislikes her (he already considers her a friend). But he is very introverted and much prefers being by himself so he does not offend or unintentionally hurts her by mistreating her due to her blindness. Plus, his insecurities due to how he lived as a child living with a single parent and trying not to stand out. Its something I can relate to with him (except having divorced parents) because I know he's not a mean person at heart (his actions are speaking otherwise). But he much prefers loneliness to prevent awkward moments and feels very cautious on how to approach certain subjects. One of the more relatable MCs I have ever witness in anime!

I really love that we got a glimpse of what Fuyutsuki not only “see” but what she feels as well. I’ve worked in the social service sector before and some with disabilities echo the same sentiment. They do need help but they’re not helpless. Just like everyone else. The rest of us also need guidance when learning something new but are able to do things on our own when we get the hang of it. They feel the same. They feel they don’t need more help, just a different help. I found Kakeru to be a bummer at the start. Overly negative and cynical. But I held out because I saw the story is setting him up to grow and that type of development is satisfying to see. And we see how much he’s grown already. We’re also seeing how two of them are feeling about each other as well. And they’ve already fallen for one another. And they’re letting it slip accidentally lol. Really love romance where we get to see them develop that feeling for one another over time rather than the love at first sight kind.

I know it’s a different romance telling a different type of story but it’s also why I’ve been enjoying this much more than Sign of Affection which also involves a girl with disabilities. For one the guy involved in SoA feels so idealized. While Kakeru was so frustrating at first but we see his growth and I prefer something like this more. With SoA, even if there’s something he needs to adjust or learn or compromise, it feels like he does it so easily. Which really doesn’t do much for me as an audience unless you’re looking for the wish fulfilment kind, which I guess is what that show is. I also feel like I’m learning and being put in Koharu’s shoes more and through Kakeru too, feel the challenges faced living as and around a blind person. And like you mentioned, the attraction and chemistry feels earned here over few episodes of almost like trial and error whereas in SoA it was like an instant attraction. I guess while both shows feature disabilities, they’re a different type of story with different objectives but it took this show for me to realise my preference towards one of them

While I still think SoA is very good, it’s a clear-cut shoujo with wish fulfilment for women, just like The Dangers in My Heart is a clear-cut shounen with wish fulfilment for boys/young men. This feels much more neutral, grounded, and mature. While it’s not about disabilities, I think that’s also why I enjoy Ramparts of Ice so much. It’s very neutral, grounded, and mature too, even if the characters themselves aren’t always those things, if that makes sense. Same goes for all the big tearjerker romances.

Yeah, I do feel shounen and shoujo romances tend to have stronger wish fulfilment elements while seinen and josei less so. Still leans a bit towards its target audience but a bit more neutral in general. And I think I’m liking the more neutral ones in the past few years. I Have A Crush At Work, Insomniacs After School are some that I really enjoyed. I do want to add Smoking Behind the Supermarket cos I’ve been enjoying it but it does feel like it’s skewed towards guys with Tamaya but I can also see the tired overworked older office guy be some girl’s wish fulfilment as well lol

I Have A Crush At Work That show was pretty fun. Insomniacs After School I will never stop glazing this show, it's soo good, and I am still coping for more seasons! Smoking Behind the Supermarket I am also really liking that one so far. I am fine with shows being skewed toward certain audiences, because I still watch most of them, but that’s also why I appreciate when a show doesn’t do it. It’s a nice palate cleanser. I can also see the tired overworked older office guy be some girl’s wish fulfilment as well lol For sure. I think it's pretty accurate that a woman like Tayama would go for a nervous, older, overworked salaryman. They're the perfect targets for teasing.

She might have a disability but she's just as much an adorably and dedicated girl head over heels in love as any anime Best Girl. She can't see Kakeru's face but that's not going to prevent her from loving every part of him that she CAN be aware of. They really do have a very natural chemistry together and are practically already together. The question is who is going to bite the bullet and confess first.

The first two was just kindness out of preventing her to get hurt and making sure she doesn't trip. Don't think he had romantic interests then. The last one though was a slip of what he thought about her physically. Dude is feeling physical attraction and is a good dude at heart, but probably thinks its best to avoid romance due to being cautious on how to be around her without making things awkward.

I like Koharu's POV is shown here. It's just sad that she will never see how Kakeru looks. Well, imagination is the limit, Koharu! Though his looks does not really matter: she is still in love with him because of his words and actions. Hoping that Kakeru finally gets the courage to confess to Koharu, given he is becoming more and more obvious on what he feels for her. Well, I think Koharu seems to have an inkling on what Kakeru feels.

In the end, she faced the same dilemma as Kakeru: wondering about the right moment and fearing the other person might not be interested, given that her disability would likely cause most people to reject her. Still, just seeing them on the verge of confessing their feelings at the end is a step forward, as it makes it clear that the feelings aren't one-sided.

Interesting choice to the white void for the first portion of the episode to represent Koharu's perspective. Of course the true version of her perspective would have been a pure white void possibly not even including herself and maybe that would have been a bit too experimental. I wonder if the spare pair are going to be a side couple, it did seem like Yuuko was staring at Ushio at one point during the rowing event and we even see them walking around together at times. I hope we get to see her interact with Kakeru. I'm sure that will be fun. And we have confirmation that Koharu is indeed in love with Kakeru and probably would've confessed her feelings during that ferry ride. Could Koharu actually see those outlines and shapes, or is it just stylized for the audience? My interpretation was that the fuzzy shapes are her filling in the gaps from her memory from when she used to be able to see, plus the fact that she'd obviously be very spatially aware of her own home, like how most people can walk around their own homes in the dark / with eyes closed. She still needs people to point out things directly in front of her (railing on the boat, where her plate is on the table, ect) so I doubt she can see blurry shapes.

From what I saw, the things that had color she is familiar with, but things that don't she's not or can't know, like the pictures on the wall bring white but the walls pinkish. She knows what her mom looks like and what her pj's and blankets and stuff are because she's been told, but she doesn't know what Kakeru looks like so he was just an outline.

The animation gets fuzzier in Koharu's POV portions, which probably isn't entirely accurate since she can't see at all, but it's an artistic choice there. Given that things start to appear as Kakeru starts to describe them, it seems that it's not what she sees but what she imagines. That's why her house is more distinct than the outside, since she's used to it. Huh. So Kakeru isn't the only self-conscious one. Koharu always seemed really comfortable in her own skin, but I guess it's silly to think she doesn't have her own insecurities. Nice coverup, Kakeru. Classic "you're really attractive - err, I mean yukatas" and "I love--- I mean, you love fireworks". Fireworks were cancelled, but we got some unprotected handholding in its place.

We finally get Koharu's perspective in her white, fuzzy, transparent world! Even as she lives it like any other girl, disability or otherwise, even while adjusting for her blindness. THEY UPDATED THE OP AND ED!!! We've actually got people in them! Kakeru, Koharu, Narumi, and Yuko all doing friend group stuff while Kakeru and Koharu are clearly into each other in the OP! Kakeru and Koharu meeting each other for a date in the ED! It's nice to see that Koharu's mom (?) is also cognizant of her blindness as she cooks and eats meals with her, though as a mom she is also cognizant that her daughter is clearly head over heels for a boy with the amount of effort she put in for this date. She was just THAT excited to go on it with Kakeru. She's a down bad college girl, just like any other. Koharu has always strived to achieve anything she could, even with her blindness, right down to falling in love. She can't see Kakeru's face, but every part of him (his voice, his kindness, his gentleness), she's fallen in love with. But while her feelings for him are practically exploding out of her body, she can't confess for fear he'll reject her. Even if her disability wasn't a factor, she's still anxious about it. But that too is totally normal for a girl. There's romantic boat rides and then there's Yuko and Koharu joining the Cutter Boat Ride Narumi/Kakeru put on for the school festival. It's grueling work, but Kakeru's got his own personal cheerleader in Koharu cheering him on! As well as her absolutely precious laughter! There's that Kakeru kindness Koharu fell for when he's cognizant of Yuko getting seasick. Though Yuko and Narumi both have something in common, they seem to be workaholics AND seem to enjoy setting up/teasing KakeruxKoharu together. Could we finally get a proper fireworks festival date between the two of them? I'm with Kakeru, you put Koharu in a yukata and a yukata beauty contest, she'd win hands down, disability or no disability. But the real point is that he'd choose her over other girls, as they dance around him admitting his feelings for her. Bummer the rain ruined the aerial fireworks show, though Kakeru still wants to be with Koharu, needs to keep her warm in the rain, and he's got fireworks back home...though the implications of inviting her to his dorm room are obvious.

It was really nice to see Koharu's perspective this episode. From meeting her mom to what she’s thinking about when it comes to Kakeru. Speaking of Kakeru, he was more expressive in this episode. Nice to see him catch on that Yuko was getting seasick and slow the rowing down. Rain may have canceled the fireworks, but we got Kakeru giving his shirt to Koharu, handholding, and a trip to his dorm? Hmm.

For most of the show, we've seen things from Kakeru's perspective but now we've got Koharu's. Heaps loving the change in artstyle to further emphasise her perspective. There's the bright background with pastel colours and the objects only had minimal details, with only Koharu herself drawn normally. There's also the faceless Kakeru as she had never seen him before, unlike her mum. Meanwhile, during the ferry ride the background started in a blank slate before it gradually gets filled as Kakeru narrated the scenery. Seems like next episode will revolve around them taking shelter in his room. Could they hold their feelings back in such a setting?

Like what others have mentioned, the production committee did an excellent job with the white mist like background, together with the outline of people and objects, so that we viewers are experiencing the perspective of Koharu. Most of us have probably gone through confessions at some stage in our lives. I can remember how scary confessions can be, especially the thought of failure. It must be even worse for Koharu because she is conscious of her blindness.

Of course fear of rejection yet wanting to confess to be with the person you like is a quintessential human experience, disability or otherwise. Koharu may be blind but she's truly a girl in love.

See, I have always believed he was a kind person at heart since the beginning, but he much prefers to not stand out and have to deal with dramatic situations. In the beginning, where he wasn't friends with Koharun yet, he didn't help out because he didn't want to be in an awkward postion like that and secretly hope that someone else would help her instead. But as he got closer with her and Hayase, he now help out since he now likes them as friends.

The part from her POV remembering the date is such a fascinating artistic choice, I love it. Oh man everything fading in as he describes it during the boat section... this is probably my favorite episode of this show so far. Finally getting her POV and handling it so artfully is magic. Man her on the bed reminds me of a moment from Fragrant Flower after a certain phone exchange. So damn cute. I like this boat tradition, it is unique and adds a fun flavor. I assume the real university has it too. "Jump with joy" our boy is being at least somewhat honest about his feelings. Thank god. Okay this part sort of hurts, she's so self conscious when talking about the Yukata contest. This show remains a treat, and I didn't catch any tragedy flags this episode which is nice.

Representing Koharu's point of "view" as light pastels on a white "paper" void was adorable, and the little details like how her mom has a defined face while Kakeru doesn't and how things are drawn in real time according to how stuff gets deacribed were fascinating. As much as the fireworks show getting cancelled sucks, I'm glad our dude Kakeru isn't letting that cut his time with Koharu short. They better get their actual fireworks date eventually, though.

I wonder, are the transparent visuals really how Koharu sees or were they drawn out for us audiences? Was she really able to see Kakeru/Hayase's hair and outfit or was that drawn for us since we know what they look like? I swear though, I never met an MC that I relate to than Kakeru: Prefers being alone and would rather not hang out with folks, but not because he dislikes everyone or thinks everyone sucks since he is a kind person deep down and cares for others! (I would like to say that I at least am better aware to know that if I am with folks, just try to act more positively and just go with the positive flow if you can). Dude certainly feels attraction for Koharun, but probably feels like its best for him to try not go out his way to hang out with her, unless asked or looks like she is need of serious help out of kindness.

I took them to be more of a mental view of where or how things looked to her. Since she could see before, she knows what many things look like, even if she can't see now. I think that would be different from someone blind from birth. For example, she knows what a light switch looks like and where it is in the room from before losing her sight, so she can visualize that in her mind. She knows where other things in the room are located in relation to each other, so she's able to have a sense of them, even if she can't see them. Another example is the cruise. She had a general idea from her past trip, but she filled in the image in her mind based on the details he provided so that she could "see" it in her head. In the case of Kakeru's looks, his face was missing in those scenes as she's not touched his face to feel how he looks...she can't yet visualize that, but she does have a general understanding of his build.
