When I started this show I was expecting the usual self insert power fantasy. What I got was an amateur GM running a TTRPG with a favored player and no game prep, all adlib.

I've been enjoying it thus far. Each episode just throws one curveball after another but not in the overdone way that other My Show's Title is Longer Than Your Show's Title light novel adaptations do it. This show is judicious with how it flings its bullshit at you. There's a smooth flow to it.

Dungeon Meshi is technically more a video game (Wizardly), but definitely also contains ttrpg influence (I think the author is a known Baldur's Gate player). A decent number of fantasy series are influenced by Sword World, although a lot more are more video games who were themselves influenced by Sword World.

Yeah, all this edging has been super annoying. I don't know if she was introduced much later in the source so they put all those scenes in the earlier episodes to give her a more "natural" introduction and to emphasize she's an important character, but it's the same scene of her sitting and crying over and over that's worn out it's welcome

If they really wanted to "introduce" her sooner, they REALLY need to do a better job than the same reused scene without any new context... They gotta give us SOMETHING, including something for the characters to recognize the name from. Like... is she one of the missing persons from that withdrawn request? At least give us their names, so that the CHARACTERS can recognize her as they get close. Otherwise, it's just this weird disconnect where we, the audience, know more than the characters.

I'm glad this story was lighthearted enough to not have Arios and Ginny get eaten alive by monster rats. Poor Celliss getting to friendly fire tank that fireball, but she was strong enough to shrug it off so all's well. Maybe next week they'll finally learn about and rescue the glasses lady? Seems like they'll be storming the castle at the very least so should be soon.

Tbh these shows are far more enjoyable when you don’t have some form of sexual assault being talked about every 5 minutes like in alot of these fantasy shows. Like the reason I like this stuff is because it’s usually predictable, low risk, and lighthearted but a lot of authors still choose to insert random bad stuff happening anyway. Like the from overshadowed to over powered is full of this sort of shit almost happening multiple times. Same with skeleton knight.
