That's one of the big differences between MT and other "harem" series. Once they join the harem the girls usually become useless. Here Sylphie and Roxy are fully capable of handling themselves since they're veterans in their respective fields (bodyguard/adventurer). Rudeus' only real contribution was catching Roxy and finishing off that one treant.

Once they join the harem the girls usually become useless. Not only that, but Rudy is OK taking a back seat and doing nothing as long as others can handle the threats. I'm assuming that if anything attacked that the rest just couldn't handle, then Rudy would let loose.
