I saw a one-piece stage show in Japan and chopper was literally just a guy in an all black onesie holding a chopper stuffed animal. It was great

Imagine like 15 years ago when One Piece was the least popular of the big 3 (in the West at least) and saying the series would be this popular worldwide. Alongside having an offical NBA collaboration and a live action series that's become immensely popular. You'd be called insane and told live actions are always terrible. One Piece has always been the big dog in Japan. But now it feels like it's finally getting the world wide recognition outside of Japan it's always deserved.
15年前、ワンピースが（少なくとも欧米では）big3の中で一番人気がなかった頃を想像してみてよ。その時に「この作品が世界的にこんなに人気になる」って言ったら？しかも公式NBAコラボや、めちゃくちゃ人気になった実写シリーズまであるって言ったら？頭おかしいって言われて、実写化なんて…って言われてたはず。+1

Can't answer about the shorts, but for the sandals it's likely a safety issue. Stage actors like this are essentially stunt actors, so if their toes get crushed in an accident they can be subbed out for an understudy. If Iñaki Godoy sustains a foot injury then the entire production shuts down while he recovers, plus the studio could get sued by any projects he's booked for that his recovery time conflicts with.

Woah ive seen the normal version of the Aquaworld show in Universal Japan many times. This is a like for like exchange of all the scenes with One piece instead. Even the locations where specific actions happen. Amazing. The memorised choreography sticks.
