I hear you, especially given how significant s3 will be to the overarching plot. I think both seasons adapted the novels as well as an anime can, only summarizing or skipping necessary parts for needed brevity.

Also if you wanted a gun to the head answer. Season 1 is better on the first watch, Season 2 is better in the after the ending rewatches. Season 2s adaptation is not as good as Season 1s for reasons. When re-reading or re-watching I will watch clips of Season 1(and the associated arcs) but the discussions about the series, the focus is on Season 2(probably 2nd or 3rd highest) and later. FYI to give you a chuckle, I would not have recommended the anime until season 3 finishes. Hopefully you remained unspoiled.

For me it's actually other way around. Season 1 is better on rewatch, Season 2 is ok either way. One of my main problems with first watch of Season 1 is the sheer amount of time it makes you cringe especially early on making you miss stuff. Ofc the best rewatch value is always given if you Watch first => read the novels => watch again.

They're too different. Season 1 was an adventure focused anime. Season 2 was a slice of life focused anime. Season 3 will probably be more balanced. Personally I liked s1 a tad more because of little details. Intro's and outros being set pieces/b-roll for worldbuilding is one such small detail that I liked.

I looooved that intros and outros were still part of the actual anime story. I loved the sense of realism it created and how it made the world feel tall, wide and *traveled.*

It also made the passage of time so much more apparent. MT takes place over many years and without the dynamic OP’s, it’s difficult to get that sense without some forced exposition (“wow can’t believe it’s been 15 months since we did x”). S2 was bad at communicating the passage of time IMO and it made it confusing at times.

The story gets better over time. Next season should be amazing. In terms of anime adaptation, I'd say 1st season better quality.

There is no comparison. The first one is not only better from a technical point of view, but also and above all for how it adapted the story. It is clear that those who worked on the second season did not have the experience and skill of those who worked on the first. Too many cuts and changes. The second part was a step forward, but we are still very far, from every point of view, from the overall quality of the first season. And I say this not only as a big fan of the work, but as someone who clearly prefers the content of volumes 7-12, to those of volumes 1-6. Unfortunately, Studio Bind doesn't care about MT as much as White Fox does about Re:Zero. And it shows. PS: These are my 2 favorite isekai along with Bookworm.

season 2 because i like this story for the emotions and the characters. season 1 was good but 2 cemented it as my favourite piece of media ever and ill never forget the wave of emotions the last 3 episodes gave me

As long as the anime keeps dropping I'm just going to say the latest season. My enjoyment of the series went up with every volume, and so far it has translated well into my enjoyment of the anime
