Luffy shared food with the starving people in Wano, he is a hero according to his own definition

The people of wano are his friends so that doesn’t count /s

This is really it, in Luffy's mind a hero is selfless, he just shares with his friends, which he likely thinks is selfish in regards to how a hero behaves. Now coincidentally he's made friends with just about everyone he's ever met who wasn't trying to kill him (and even some that were) but there's nothing heroic about helping or sharing with friends everyone does that.

*He shared food, didn't share meat xD

Yeah, but he didn't share the meat. Just veggies. /s

He's not a traditional hero like Superman or Spider-Man who goes around saving everyone and drops everything when a crisis/natural disaster occurs.  But he is a hero, nonetheless. Whether he likes it or not.

He has literally said to the people of wano if you are in trouble fly my flag and I will come

I am just going to remind everyone that he broke out thousands of dangerous criminals.

He didn't say he'd come to make it better; he said he'd be there.

I think there's room within a character to be both a hero and a criminal at the same time. He's a pirate. He does what he wants.

Yeah but it was to save his brother so it’s alright /s

He kinda had to as he had to go against the world government. Knowing that the fact that some of those criminals ended up in impel down, they'll end up again.

Is he? When has he shared his meat? Checkmate.

He’s a hero who doesn’t care about the recognition of being one. Which makes him even more heroic, ironically. It’s why he picks up allies without even trying at times

He's a hero like Captain Carrot from the Discworld. He attracts followers, and has no desire to abuse that power

Oooh, I used to be a prolific reader, but I really trailed off. Been considering picking up the Discworld series. Would you recommend it?

Definitely worth reading. You can even find free copies of all the books in online archives. I would recommend reading in chronological release order. Theres lots of people who will tell you the books are self contained and you can jump in anywhere but its just not true. All the main characters that appear in multiple books all have story arcs that transcend individual books. Plus the world itself is a character that grows and changes over time. You miss out on all the big picture details by skipping around.

Luffy’s whole thing is freedom, not responsibility or recognition

Correct. Heroes are absolutely selfless Luffy is selfishly selfless. That is the difference. Luffy is a hero but he has no sense of duty the likes of Spiderman or Superman or Captain America.
Based_Lord_Shaxx
\*Luffy's VIEW of a hero is that they are absolutely selfless. One Piece is filled with different types of hero, and what it may or may not mean to be one of them.

You know it's funny, this isn't true. At least in the dress Rosa arc. Luffy told law off that they need to save the country because he saw how awful Doflamingo made it. He didn't do it for a selfish reason like he usually does

I think it's the mindset, Luffy sees something he doesn't like and can make sacrifices to fix it, but he doesn't do it because it's wrong, it's more because he doesn't like it.

He's a hero but he is not someone who sets out to be a hero, and that is why he doesn't consider himself one. Luffy isn't traveling the world looking to help or save people, but he is the kind of person who can't turn a blind eye to injustice. In Luffy's options a hero is someone who seeks justice for selfless reasons, while he on the other hand only seeks justice when directly confronted with injustice that he can't overlook. He stumbles onto problems that he solves instead of seeking them out. Take the World Government, despite knowing about a lot of the bad things they have done and being directly opposed to them, he isn't trying to stop them and only gets involved when they affect him first. Enies Lobby, Marine Ford, Egg Head, and Elbaf Luffy only acts because he was provoked. If the Knights did not show up at Elbaf he was perfectly willing to continue on his journey to find the One Piece despite everything that happened at Egghead. If Luffy was a hero in the way he describes it, he would be actively trying to stop the World Government, but he doesn't because he is not a "hero". Luffy isn't going to openly hand out meat to everyone for the sake of it, but he will hand it out to someone who has none.

Hes about same hero as Goku. They just happens to do heroic things from time to time, but they arent heroes. They just had goals that helped people.

I've watched Luke 12 epsiodes of DBZ but doesn't Goku say "I will not let you destroy my world"? I'd say that's kind of heroic? I should finish it tho.
NectarOfTheBussy
idk homies gotta live there and his friends and family are there. Still kinda “selfish” and just shooting for his own goals lol

I think Luffy is just like how I interpret Sonic: a hero by nature but doesn't recognize himself as such. He just does whatever he wants, and coincidentally those things he does are good, heroic things. It's more like this: he's someone who does heroic stuff, but isn't a hero. For example, just in Luffy's case now, he knows what the WG and Celestial Dragons do, but isn't actively trying to stop them like a hero would do, unless they cross his path or hurt his friends. He's not going to, I don't know, attack Mary Geoise instead of continuing his journey to find the One Piece even if people are suffering there — if, hypothetically, Vivi is captured by Imu, however, he will go there immediately and destroy that entire castle, because she's his friend. That's how I see his character, at least.

He strikes me as someone that beliefs that these actions don’t make him heroic, that everybody should be doing them
