the original I'd say Joe
he was terrified of Pukamon in episode 1 but went head to head against Metaletemon after he tried to kill Mimi and actually killed Leomon despite Zudomon being 1 stage below him
i also like Mimi and TKs development, both were crying all the time, and Mimi was very selfish, but by the end they were actually mature and responsible, Mimi refusing to fight because she didn't want other Digimon to die for her, and TK keeping his cool when Kari is sick, the city they are hiding in is literally being nuked and when he was being chased by Piedmon while turning the others into keychains
These 3 have by far the best development, but i still say Joe had the best one
in the reboot though, Mimi takes the cake, she was the only character i actually enjoyed and her episodes were always great

i never seen the reboot but when i rewatch the original; i only watch the dark masters arc and have completely forgotten what the characters were like at first; specifically Mimi and TK.
that being said i wholeheartedly agree with you and your analysis :D

Joe's character arc was miles ahead of everyone else tbh. Going from being terrified of everything to becoming the most reliable one when things got properly mental - that's proper character development right there. Most of the others just stayed pretty much the same throughout but Joe actually grew into someone completely different by the end

The way Joe was treated in Tri was nothing short of a crime.
Ol' Reliable deserved better.
tri.

Tri deserved better in *general.* It seems like there WAS some kind of plan going in, but then, for one reason or another, those plans either never manifested or had to change rapidly.
tri. +16

Even though my favorite is Matt, I'd probably either Joe, Sora or Izzy.
Izzy has a very peculiar story, he's adopted and has to deal with the fact that even though he's different from his parents he still loves them and needs to make that clear to his mother by the end of the series. You also have to think that it was the 90s-00s and it was Japan so I'd say it was a pretty unconventional and progressive story.
Joe has a very simple story, but still a well written one. He's your stereotypical asian kid overwhelmed by his parents desire for perfection. He starts off as really annoying and fun policing, often power tripping and aggressive when not listen to. Over the course of the series though he learns to understand the others opinions, to listen to them instead of ordering them and eventually realizes that his passion for medicine comes from himself rather than from his parents.
Sora has the most heartbreaking story of all. It's about a daughter who once again trapped by an obsessive mother who wants her to become more feminine and to pick her own career. She's forced to swap places and become her the "mother" of Biyomon and eventually realize she's acting just like her and that it was all just for her good. She eventually also gets to later talk to her mother and understands that her behavior was greatly exaggerated in her own head and that she's actually free to choose her own path.
They're all really good, I'd say the best written is probably Joe's but I really like the simplicity and the development of Izzy's and Sora's as well. The only problem is that later on in the movies, in 02 and in last kizuna, Sora is still shown as stuck under her mother's shadow, while at the end of Adventure she's perfectly fine and over her depression.

Also Joeband Sora have to deal with traditions of their culture, Joe with how demanding the educative system could be and Sora with how Iemoto are expected to leave the position to their oldest child (usuallu son but Sora's mother is already a break in that tradition)

These 8 are so good written that they were the inspiration to the Cast of Digimon Survive (this can be polemic, but Survive has been best Digimon story i've seen)
That said, I'd say Mimi had a slow development, but if you see, she goes from be a Pain in the ass innfirst ark but then stops complain, then in Myotismon ark she had a down in her development (when the part of Princess Mimi) but then apologized and finally madurate
Also is realistic that she's the one that breaks down emotionally seeing their friends (Chipmon, Whamon, Pixiemon...) being killed in front of her, the questions is how the others does not, they're like 5-9 years old??!

actually, they are 7-11 years old lmao
TK and Kari are 7
Mimi and Izzy are 9
Tai Matt and Sora are 10
Joe is 11
youre right though, they are kids, why arent they scared and crying?

Trchnically soeaking their specific ages and birthdays weren't given in Adventure to avoid trying to shoehorn them into Horoscope stereotyoes, only their grades but a conversation betwen V-Tamer Taichi and Davis in the corssover Manga implies than Tai was born in 1988 so 2/3 he wa salready 11, 02 Canonized than w/3 the 02 team are 11 so TK and Kari would be 8 in Adventure and only the memlrial book in 2010 stablished than Taichi, Sora and Yamato were 14 in 2002, the novel says than in 1999 Joe was 11 but he could be 11 almost 12 while the others are fresh 11

maybe im just confusing stuff then
i know they say in which grade theyre in, but i was almost certain they also said their ages

I wouldn't say all 8 of them are well-written. It's by far the best and most consistent written cast, but Kari goes from a plot device to a mary sue depending on the episode. She's never wrong, doesn't act her age, and is far more powerful and relevant than characters that have been in the show from the start.

Well, that's why I prefer Miyuki from survive over Kari.
If something Kari had her moments in 02, her Friendship with Yolei is sweet and in Spain dub, she liked to troll Davis (Daisuke) a lot.
But in Kari's defense, she started too late in the series. Gatomon/Tailmon only had ONE digievolution in the series and was quickly overpower in dark masters ark

As far as I know, Joe is 12, Tai, Sora and Matt are 111, Izzi and Mimi are 10, TK and Kari are 8. The 02 newbies have the same age as TK and Kari.
And yes, Survive has amazing story. NG+ really shows how great Shuuji (our new Joe) and Ryo are - Ryo and his partner make SO MUCH SENSE together and their development in NG+ make them my favorite pair.

To me it's Izzy. I see people saying Joe because he's the one that changes the most, but to me that's not what character development is about. I prefer Izzy because he confronts his inner demons in a much more realistic yet still satisfying way
NotBorn2Fade
If we're talking about the whole arc from Adventure to Kizuna, I'd say either Takeru or Sora, with both of them being on the different ends of a spectrum - while Takeru got to keep his childhood whimsy, Sora matured and ended up in a life she considered awful as a child in the OG Adventure.

Realistically, Yamato. He is incredibly insecure and sensitive. His most defining trait is that he loves his brother more than anything and wants to protect him. Then when he loses his main identity as his brother’s protector due to TK’s own progression, or when he sees Taichi be a better brother-figure than himself, he spirals.
But my favorite is Mimi. I adore her progression from ditzy brat to a much more even person, to a pacifist from witnessing so much death and being traumatized by it, to a militia leader because she realizes that inaction in the face of evil just aids that evil and begets more violence.
Midnighter4007
Joe. I used to dislike him as a kid and now, I go out of my way to rewatch his episodes. Even though my favorite is still TK to this day, I think Joe's got the best arc.

All of them are well written. That's why Adventure will always be the best season. Only Beatbreak has come close/equal to it and it took them almost 30 years to make such a good writing again.
They are kids with *real* problem, not some made up traits. Having overprotective mother, overambitious father, being in divorced family, apart from your brother and having insecurity about him and so on. They are all written perfectly. That's why they work well as seven (and then eight) kids. Because they feel realistic. And all their life experience is reflected in the bond with their digimon. And because their digimons have different personalities, too, they make a great pair. Like Tentomon trying to learn stuff from Koushiro or Piyomon blindly idolizing Sora, which she found childish. Or how Gomamon teases Jou for worrying about everything and trying too hard to prove himself.
This is all just so damn perfect.
