I’m currently on episode 337, so still pretty early in One Piece, and I know I’ve got a long way to go.
I’ve already come across a lot of emotional scenes, some were really sad, even made me tear up.
But the Going Merry farewell felt different. It didn’t exactly “break” me, but it was really emotional in a quiet way… like I was actually saying goodbye to a crew member.
Did anyone else feel it like that? Or were there other scenes in the first \~300 episodes that hit you harder?

Because it was indeed a part of the crew. And at the same time It reflects how One Piece went into a more serious tone after the Water Seven/Ennies Lobby arc

It sure was. I can keep watching that scene again and again. I actually watched it a few times before going to the next episode. And I really liked that calm sound dubbing of going merry

Its the build up to that moment. The adventures they went on, Ussops attempts at repairing Merry, the Sky Island "spirit" scene, the expressions Merry had at big memorable scenes really making Merry feel like a living being, the fight between Luffy and Ussop over Merry, and of course Merry coming to the rescue on Ennies Lobby arc. To the crew, Merry was home, but also a real member of the crew, a part of their family, who tragically gave their all for the Strawhats and then passed away before their eyes. Making it far more then just saying goodbye to an old ship. It was the first death of a main character.

Woah true… it was the first death of a main character. I hope I won’t be seeing anymore 😳
MrMatt89

Yeah all the other deaths were from flashbacks or characters that arent important. Like the guy Nami killed
.

To be fair, that's also Anime filler.
I think in the manga, no (named) character dies at all before the Merry Go and later Ace. Well, outside of flashbacks at least.

Yeah, I think part of it was that it was the reason why Usopp and Luffy fought(besides for Usopp disrespecting the captain). And we saw Usopp work hard to fix it being told that the Merry would sink if it went back to sailing. But then, when it got pulled to the sea and made it to Enies Lobby, it literally saved the Straw Hats as its final act.
There were also just so many fun times on the ship and some many important moments. These include the crew holding their X’s up to Vivi, going to Skypiea, and all the different interactions of the Straw Hats from Chopper and Robin to Sanji and Zoro.

Enies Lobby was indeed full of activities and memorable moments. I even really liked how they brought down the world government flag. It was so cool

It was saying goodbye to a dear friend and a loyal, steadfast crewmate.

Mary had one final voyage with 100% risk of sinking after it and... It used it to save robin.

I mean Oda humanized quite a bit by giving it a spirit and a voice.

To be honest I think it was a culmination of alot of things, don't get me wrong the saddest part being losing the merry but with everything with Robin, Usopp and Luffy, Merry unable to set sail. It was as if the entire journey was over amd the crew had fallen apart. The worst part is we get through all the struggle and at this point they'd saved robin, it looked like there was still redemption for usopp and luffy and yet we still couldn't save Merry. It was the first arc to show both the crew and the audience that everything can go so well and still end in tragedy

True.. everything can go well and still leave things with a sad note.

Going Merry farewell is just really special. It felt like the end of the first part of their journey for me.

It's also the timing of it. Obviously we spend a lot of time with her and she gets humanized a lot, but the story is also told phenomenally.
In W7/EL we have 3 big inner crew conflicts: Merry not being reparable, Usopp leaving the crew because of this and Robin being taken.
We half resolve Usopp the moment we fight together with him, we resolve Robin when she gets saved. And then there's the scene where they are surrounded and nothing seems to be able to save them. And it isn't some asspull that they get saved, but it's the ship that was a real part of the story.
All of the little things are so good. Especially in the Anime the weird whale sound was so good because noone would guess it's the ship the first time they see it. And Usopp is the first to hear it. And then everybody knows. It is such a good scene when they all jump down.
So when the death happens, it is after a real high of all conflicts being resolved. It is so phenomenally done.
And big shoutout to the G8 filler arc as well for adding even more foreshadowing on top of it.

Because Merry was a person the whole time. She loved the crew and used the last of her strength to save them.
Fortunately, one of the movies implies that the Merry’s Klaubautermann lives on in the Sunny.

It’s actually kind of mentioned in the episode where they decide the name of the next ship “thousand Sunny”. They say they hope going merry’s soul will be alive in thousand sunny.

It had a profound effect on me. I was on the water every summer growing up, and my 14 foot aluminum boat got me out of a lot of tricky water.
The scene also made me think of a quote from the Wheel of Time book series by one of the seafaring people “the Seafolk”. “A ship is alive, and he is like a man, with a true man’s heart. Treat him well and care for him properly, and he will fight for you against the worst sea. He will fight to keep you alive even after the sea has long since given him his own deathstroke…”

I’m sure the scene must have felt closer to you than it did to me. I’m not a fan of water. Honestly, it scares the shit out of me. But even so, this scene was really moving, even for someone like me.

Becauae of Klabautermann effect. It said that when pirate in One Piece care and love their ship, the spirit of Klabautermann will dwell the ship. The ship become alive and the pirate crew can even hear the ship's voice.
We are only audience/reader in the "real" world watching/reading One Piece. Then, the moment we can hear Merry talk, it feels like Going Merry also consider us as the one who care and love her very much. That's when the magic begun. We feels the connection and love to this ship even more, which make this farewell moment become even more special.

I was very curious when they first showed up in Skypiea. I wanted to know what it was and the wait was too long… and after that long wait to know the real story behind, it felt amazing to know how much going merry enjoyed their time with the crew. Honestly it was a breathtaking view from the author
