I’m currently on episode 337, so still pretty early in One Piece, and I know I’ve got a long way to go. I’ve already come across a lot of emotional scenes, some were really sad, even made me tear up. But the Going Merry farewell felt different. It didn’t exactly “break” me, but it was really emotional in a quiet way… like I was actually saying goodbye to a crew member. Did anyone else feel it like that? Or were there other scenes in the first \~300 episodes that hit you harder? Picture credits https://collider.com/

Because it was indeed a part of the crew. And at the same time It reflects how One Piece went into a more serious tone after the Water Seven/Ennies Lobby arc

It sure was. I can keep watching that scene again and again. I actually watched it a few times before going to the next episode. And I really liked that calm sound dubbing of going merry

Its the build up to that moment. The adventures they went on, Ussops attempts at repairing Merry, the Sky Island "spirit" scene, the expressions Merry had at big memorable scenes really making Merry feel like a living being, the fight between Luffy and Ussop over Merry, and of course Merry coming to the rescue on Ennies Lobby arc. To the crew, Merry was home, but also a real member of the crew, a part of their family, who tragically gave their all for the Strawhats and then passed away before their eyes. Making it far more then just saying goodbye to an old ship. It was the first death of a main character.

Woah true… it was the first death of a main character. I hope I won’t be seeing anymore 😳

Yeah all the other deaths were from flashbacks or characters that arent important. Like the guy Nami killed .

To be fair, that's also Anime filler. I think in the manga, no (named) character dies at all before the Merry Go and later Ace. Well, outside of flashbacks at least.

Yeah, I think part of it was that it was the reason why Usopp and Luffy fought(besides for Usopp disrespecting the captain). And we saw Usopp work hard to fix it being told that the Merry would sink if it went back to sailing. But then, when it got pulled to the sea and made it to Enies Lobby, it literally saved the Straw Hats as its final act. There were also just so many fun times on the ship and some many important moments. These include the crew holding their X’s up to Vivi, going to Skypiea, and all the different interactions of the Straw Hats from Chopper and Robin to Sanji and Zoro.

Enies Lobby was indeed full of activities and memorable moments. I even really liked how they brought down the world government flag. It was so cool

It was saying goodbye to a dear friend and a loyal, steadfast crewmate.

Mary had one final voyage with 100% risk of sinking after it and... It used it to save robin.
