I mean he doesn’t really seem surprised or anything that she doesn’t trust him, he just states it as it is. And his orders were likely to just “keep Vivi save” (with probably whatever additional secret order).

Not her friends. Not her cousin. Not her great great grandpa. Her. So I don’t really see a “contradiction” or whatever you wanna call it.

He’s not daft. He knew Vivi wasn’t just gonna suddenly trust him, however she’s still a Princess and it’s still his job regardless of how badly he shit the bed in terms of first impressions.

He probably knew that hostility was coming, that doesn’t mean getting deep-fried by Vivi is anymore fun.

You seem to mistake Lucci’s facial expression (a common failure). It is not “Why doesn’t this nice princess trust me, her helpful bodyguard?” It’s a “Fuck, I hate THIS part of my job. Annoying brat.”

Besides the thing about following orders, I’d imagine it’s because vivi is a human and Shirahoshi is a mermaid, there was literally a whole arc about how they’re viewed as ‘lass than people’. If you look at Lucci as a cop and Shirahoshi as a racial minority, and vivi as a non minority, I think you get the picture

He didn’t try to capture Shirahoshi because he wanted to, but because he was ordered by a Celestial Dragon and he stopped when a different Celestial Dragon told him to stop. He got an order to watch Vivi as a guard in spite of his previous interaction with her and then got a different order to capture her. All of this was done because its job and he really doesn’t actually have any investment in her beyond t
